Just so you know, refs have to start at the bottom of the ladder, like most professions.
You'll not get many former pro footballers even considering the idea of reffing on a cold Sunday morning.

I imagine many of them have historic accounts from a period where KYC regulations weren't as strict or the ID has expired or been lost or a fair few banks accept HMRC correspondence (which obviously has no picture). Driving abroad does feel more natural, but that's because cars are actually meant to be LHD originally so the steering wheel is more central to the seating position etc.
A RHD cars steering wheel is offset to the left slightly.

Never driven on the wrong side of the road abroad, but I've done it plenty of times here.
