I thought it was a definite penalty at the time, but having seen it replayed, just watch Ince throw his left leg into Maatsen as he makes the (rash) challenge. We were lucky the ref didn’t give it, but he was awful all afternoon. Reading were horrible and got exactly what they deserved.

The three part series was a documentary, narrated by the author, as you say and it’s a few years ago. What I was referring to is a new dramatisation due in the autumn. FWIW I think Mayne did the right thing in a war situation. These blokes weren’t playing games and neither were the enemy.

Linesmen (Assistant Referees) should be equipped with the aerosol sprays that the referees have and quickly spray where the ball went out. The throw in should then be made behind the mark. Not difficult really if anyone in authority cared about enforcing the rules.

Saka put his foot/leg in the arc of Vydra’s swing of his leg to prevent him getting a clear contact on the ball. It’s an old pro’s trick, which refs rarely pick up and that’s why they do it regularly. It’s a penalty.

Dwight is a very talented lad who has now been sussed by the opposition. They force him inside, where his refusal to use his right foot means the ball will go sideways or backwards.
