I've been to Bilbao only once, despite having relatives living nearby (which says more about the relatives than it does the city).

I'd recommend Casco Viejo, the old town - fantastic for bars and tapas.

My personal Top 3... Skylarking Apple Venus Vol 1 Wasp Star - Apple Venus Vol 2 XTC are one of the most criminally underrated bands the UK has ever produced, mainly down to their refusal to tour due to Andy Partridge's severe stage fright. It's such a shame as he was/is one of our great songwriters.
