Re: The cost of playing out badly
One problem with this playing about at the back, is that it doesn't get us anywhere. Most of our goals (and we don't score all that many) come from breakaways where we get the ball forward quickly. We're not good at breaking down a packed defence, or a defence that is given time to get organised.

Re: If VK is made director of football who is our manager?
In American football (NFL), they typically have a general manager to draft and trade for the players, and the head coach to coach them and to make all the matchday decisions. Obviously they have to work together, and it would be a foolish GM who didn't run potential signings past the coach. But the ...

What does a director of football do? If he is Kompany's boss, then he's just like any other director. If he's not Kompany's boss, then he isn't a director at all. What's the job description?

Sides are aware now that going down after any touch is likely to be given as a foul by these horrific referees. That’s why there has been a sharp rise in the cheating. How do you know what they are taught? All top level referees are marked on every decision they make. About 250 per game. If the people marking them, who by definition are their teachers, thought that refs in general were giving too many free kicks, then the ones who give most would be quickly repla...

I don't think the ref is in the perfect position. Whilst up with play he's a bit close. All he might have seen is O'Shea's arm movement then the player going down. It makes sense because O'Shea had messed up so it's quite possible he will try to foul to recover the situation. I agree it's not a fre...

Since the match yesterday was postponed for a waterlogged pitch, not too good.
The Charnock Richard match has now been slotted in on Wednesday 18th. Presumably Friday 20th has been saved for a potential cup final?
I wonder if there'll be any squad rotation? Anyone fancy a game?

It's a necessary addition to the change in the offside law for VAR matches. (Or, for the pernickety, the change in the application of the law.) When you could be in front, behind, or level, the linesman had a decent chance of being right, so let him make the decision. Now that you can only be in fro...

Nothing VAR could do. The delay would presumably be looking for offside.
The problem is that refs are taught to give free kicks essentially whenever a PL player asks for one, unless they are certain there was no foul. If a player falls over, and they aren't sure, they will give the free kick.

When the ref gives a penalty, VAR will not overturn it unless they can prove that the forward was not touched. If there was the merest touch, then it will be confirmed. That's the way the powers that be think it should be done, for the time being.
