The reason the defence looks so bad is because we can’t keep possession in midfield and carry no attacking threat up front, so we just invite constant pressure.

I can’t remember the circumstances of his departure, whether we didn’t offer him a good enough contract or he was just allowed to leave, but either way I thought it was a mistake to allow him to go. Although he blew hot and cold, when he performed he was Premier League quality, as he has gone on to ...

Not sure why people think he would be refusing to play. He was enjoying his football here up to his injury, which was unfortunate. If he'd have recovered properly from the injury then no doubt we would have been playing him as he is our best midfielder by some distance and, presumably, he would want...

Problem was that we were sat far too deep, particularly in the first half. Even when we did win possession and got the ball wide, Wood was isolated in the box and there was no one one the edge of the box to pick up knock downs.

The Defour situation is a real concern. Without a proper preseason he struggles with fitness. Why not make clubs hold cash on their balance sheets equivalent to, say, half of the contractual wages outstanding. So if you sign a player on a five year deal at £100k per week you would have to also set aside £13m as a contingency for if you get into difficulty. It would have a gearing effect as t...

Its difficult to see how we can improve on what we have achieved so far. I suspect 7th in the Prem is as good as is gets. That’s the problem. Without Defour we really lack someone who can unlock a defence, which means we become more reliant on long balls and set pieces to create chances.
