As a young teenager, I applied for a job at Unit 4 Cinema in Brierfield and in the interview was told ice-cream sellers had to be female. Apparently men wouldn't buy ice-cream from a man! The interviewer was a woman.

Most likely the Odeon, which closed in 1973. it was one of the most magnificent buildings in the area, (Art Deco style as many of these cinemas were). I'm pannelling-out a ceiling which meets with a curvy irregular wall. I get tremendous satisfaction from just cutting the t and g to the form of the curve. I stand back and admire the result. Little things like that, while negligible compared to the Pompidou, for example, can be terrifically reward...
