On McNeil, of course he was younger with us and came in and was suddenly playing a lot of top football in a short time. I suspect he was still physically developing and it told. He's now 24, fully developed and we are starting to see the good player that he is pretty consistently.

I don't think the total number of referees in this country has a bearing on how good the top referees are.

According to a Guardian article, in 2021 there were 24,500 referees in the England, 40 of them elite.
