Very early in the 1950’s I went with my mum and grandad to see us play Derby Co. We lost 0-1 but I was hooked. Up until then I was only allowed to go on the reserves with my grandad.

Played all my football without getting a card of any sort - then in my last game, I played centre back and rose really high to head the ball and their centre forward collapsed in front of me. Yellow card from the ref despite my protestations!

I have never seen anything in a club shop with Turfites on it. My grandad Joe of Park View fame never used the name Turfites either and he had been watching us since the early 20th century. However, I don’t remember Clarets being used before the sixties. Maybe nicknames weren’t as popular then.
