Interestingly, despite being visibly opposed to professionalism, Rovers were up to the same games, hiding players at India Mill and the paint works that became Crown. Fascinating club. Always wondered why they were named after a hotel… then research revealed the club was formed at the Methodist Church that faced that grand hotel. The main reason the West Midlands became involved with the Lancashire FA forming the football league.

It was perhaps an ill advised jokey reaction, but it is not uncommon for CEO’s of US bankruptcy’s to be dragged through the courts, pretty certain that happened to Ray from press reports at the time. Nothing nasty, I made no judgement on him or his business activities.
