Dyche mural bulldozed
Local landmark welcoming visitors to Burnley now sadly gone.

The town needs stuff like that. I hope that other Clarets murals may follow. The Jimmy Mac one next to the Angel Inn is hidden by a wall and a fence. Although I do like the new pub signage which has the Angel Inn on one side and 'No Nay Never ' on the other.

The problem being was the fact that the new 'Welcome to Burnley' sign off Junction 10 was playing second fiddle to the Dyche mural.Flatline wrote:Thanks Burnley Council, you *****!
The Dyche mural didn't cost £750,000.

Make no mistake this is an outrage of massive proportions.
The town's football club is it's most marketable asset and to dismantle its figurehead is beyond belief, modern art taken down at the whim of bureaucrats does not sit well with the populace.
There better be a damn good reason as the tourist footfall will be severely affected.

The sculpture at Gannow looks a bit phallic, an embarrassment as it's the first bit of Burnley you see as you exit the M65.Flatline wrote:I was thinking the exact same thing and that is a pile of sh1te in comparison.

Don't see the problem. It was good while it lasted but the Dyche mural aside, that area of Burnley is a dump so I'm glad they're pulling it all down for a new development.
Just get the council to pay the guy to stick another mural somewhere else.

Re: Dyche mural bulldozed
As "sad" as it is to see it go, I'm surprised it has last d this long.
As impressive as it was, I was in effect vandalism, as I don't think he had permission from the owners (a private company in Calico) to do it and if he had have asked, no doubt he'd have been informed that it was going to be demolished.
I do agree to that there needs to be more of these around the town, but in place where they can be seen.
Both this one and th JM one are tucked away and not easy to see if didn't know they were there

Re: Dyche mural bulldozed
That welcome to Burnley is either in the wrong place or at the wrong angle.
It only looks like you're welcome to Burnley if you are going down pendle way or towards Brierfield on the motorway...
It's set back and looks sh1t, but other than that it's great.
The mural however was fantastic although as stated above that area looks a right dump and possibly the most used entrance and exit to the town.
Needs a face lift.

Re: Dyche mural bulldozed
Shame it's gone but that is the nature of this sort of thing. Don't know what KRBFC means though as I thought it had real presence.
I thought it would look good to have something like the Our Town Our Turf put on the Culvert bridge. Though it may be seen as too much of an act of vandalism. But it would look good for those who walk down Yorkshire Street from the Bus Station.

Re: Dyche mural bulldozed
Why could they not just design in a gable wall on the new building and ask Graffia to decorate it?? That would have made sense I'd suggest.
And having a mural on the Culvert would also be great, but unfortunately it doesn't really lend itself to it I'd say and it's probably "listed" in some way.

Great news it was embarrasing to say the least.
As for the Culvert bridge i think a 'WELCOME TO HELL' graffiti would look great.

There is public art and there is Graffiti and that was Public Art of the highest form.
Thank you artist. I deliberately looked to see it, as I passed by last week and took in the view, knowing it was on the verge of history. The demolition team had removed much of the rest but had left the wall standing, so cheers to them.

Re: Dyche mural bulldozed
Maybe KRBFC would have preferred it in a modern sanitised detached/semi detached housing estate where most of the residents prefer to watch Man U.It was perfectly sited to match the image of the club ,full of history ,rough and ready and full in your face .
Many years ago a mad keen Burnley lad ,died in tragic circumstances ,lived across from it Addlington Square if my memory serves me right .Sure Rennie would have loved to see the mural from his front door .

Re: Dyche mural bulldozed
There definitely should be another one. Gannow top where most people entering town will pass it would be good or by the culvert as also mentioned (or BOTH!) The previous one was brilliant and like most folk I've got some fantastic pictures standing beside it. It said so much to outsiders about the town, the club, the fans and SD!

There's a wall for a couple of hundred yards or so from the Turf which is ideal, especially as it could hardly be missed by thousands coming off the match and people driving into town on one of the main roads into the centre. Just a new coat of light paint applied first would set it off nicely.
It's at the back or Reimans jewelers facing the entrance to St Mary's church. Wouldn't have thought it'll be knocked down any time soon either.
Piccy attached.
