FA Cup not as exciting?
FA Cup not as exciting?
I remember growing up through the 90s and 2000s and really enjoying the FA cup and league cup. I was Really excited when the big teams joined in. Watching the draw and jumping for joy at being drawn with Liverpool or Chelsea.
Now a days I barely seem to care. Don't get me wrong I want us to win tomorrow but I am not excited about the game. Even if it was Man Utd i don't think I would have the same excitement as in my youth because we play them in the league and that matters more, that's exciting. I would probably only be excited like I was as a kid if we was drawn with Wovers or PNE.
It's a shame really but I don't seem to get the same buzz for it anymore. Anyone else feel the same?

Re: FA Cup who cares?
I don't share your feelings in this, Inchy. I love 3rd Round Day. I'm disappointed not to be going tomorrow; I'm at a funeral. Shame the draw didn't pull us out at Home. I could've done both.
Re: FA Cup who cares?
I doubt it CT. I'm just saying it snot as exciting as it once was for me. A reckon a few will feel the same.
How many would we have taken 4/5years ago to Sunderland in the cup?

Re: FA Cup who cares?
It maybe helps for me that I barely watch any football outside of watching BFC. I don't have Sky TV or anything like that, so my leisure time isn't saturated with Foorball.
Re: FA Cup who cares?
You want to play rovers now as its a mismatch in your favour. How that excites you more than when it was a better balanced contest I don't know.
Sad.
Sad.
Re: FA Cup who cares?
For me growing up the FA cup was always about seeing us play against the big teams and loving it when we turned them over, which we have done a fair few times in the past 15 years.
Now we play those teams in the league and that's what matters the most. If we got to the quarters I would be very excited.

I care,a good cup run can lead to a good run in the league and a feelgood factor,as well as giving squad members a game .I seem to remember us doing okay when having decent cup runs..

Re: FA Cup who cares?
I think depends on the draw. When I learned it was Sunderland away, my enthusiasm for the whole competition dropped. If we had an away day somewhere lower league, I'd be more up for it.
If we win tomorrow, id look forward to be nothing else apart from the 4th round.
Dyche doesn't care much for cup competitions though.

I'm not, I'm just puzzled as to how a derby with rovers appeals greatly more than when we were last at similar strengths, us with Sam, you under coyle..?Inchy wrote:Saxo come on i stick up for you don't try fish me
As far as I'm concerned, they were the last 'fair' derby matches.

I am not going tomorrow but if we had Wimbledon away I'd probably be more up for it. Maybe it's because we just beat Sunderland

I said I would be excited if it was rovers as I'm not that excited with it anymore. i didn't put I would be excited because it's rovers and we are now better than them. I have always been excited before the Derby games

Re: FA Cup who cares?
Trouble is that back in the day, the best chance of true glory was beating a Liverpool or a Derby or Sheffield U. Nowadays the whole future of our club depends on the premier league cash.
So for me tomorrow is an excercise in trying a free swing at sorting out our away form.
A few years as an established premiere league club, then it becomes a different matter

On the plus side we now don't have both BBC and itv showing it. For the younger ones on here, coverage started at breakfast time. Little and large on one side and cannon and ball on the other. Helicopter following the coaches on the way to Wembley. God it seems like a hundred years ago!Quickenthetempo wrote:Sky tv and the premier leagues mega money happened. Re: FA Cup who cares?
Are you taking mind altering drugs, Saxo? You had a VERY established Premier League team and squad under BFS, whereas Coyle had the favourites for relegation from the Championship with a couple of additions. In terms of level playing fields it was similar to when we played you in 2000/01, when Jack's money helped you run a Premier League club, squad and wage bill in the Championship (equiv). £40m losses over two seasons attest for that.Saxoman wrote:I'm not, I'm just puzzled as to how a derby with rovers appeals greatly more than when we were last at similar strengths, us with Sam, you under coyle..?

I'd say it got closer when you came down(not straight away), and based upon wage first choice players was as level as we've had in 30 years in 2013/14. Last season before you sold Rhodes was close too.

Re: FA Cup not as exciting?
I think for us specifically, the cup's attraction has been hampered by a series of crap third round draws, usually away against unglamorous opponents that are likely to beat us - Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Southampton etc.
In your younger days, Inchy, any draw away at a Premier League club would be something to get excited about but as you say, now we play these teams every week, that is no longer an attraction in itself.
I'd be more likely to get myself up for going if we drew someone crap at ground I'd never been to before or at least not for ages - a sort of 1990's nostalgia trip. That doesn't mean I don't care about the cup though - if we were to have a run to the quarter final say, we'd all be getting massively excited. I also think clubs in our position should be prioritising the competition as it offers a genuine opportunity to win something.

Re: FA Cup not as exciting?
I think in this day and age, status and image are all important. So being in the EPL is the be all and end all. In 2013 Wigan Athletic won the FA Cup and got relegated the same season. A few Latics fans who I know said the'd take it, as the'd come straight back and it gets them on the honours board. Something to savour for all time. Fine achievement granted, but what's happened since. The've slip down two divisions, got promoted and look likely to be relegated again this season. They may very well have been relegated from the Prem anyhow, but I'm sure the cup run was a factor. As much as I'd like a cup run, I'd prefer us to maintain our PL status, so for me, unfortunately, the glory of winning the FA cup has been diluted.

Re: FA Cup not as exciting?
I think today would have been more exciting had we drawn Stourbridge or Wycombe. Something a bit different. The last few years we seem to have been drawn against clubs in similar league, which is boring in the earlier rounds.

Re: FA Cup not as exciting?
If was a Wigan fan I'd be thinking "Bloody hell, we're Wigan. We've not been in the league 40 years, and most of that has been spent in its nether regions. And even though Whelan bought us a place in the Prem for a few years, we're still not even the biggest sporting attraction in Wigan. And now our name's on the FA Cup! Forever!!!!"ashtonlongsider wrote:I think in this day and age, status and image are all important. So being in the EPL is the be all and end all. When you talk about a club's history and achievements, they are measured in terms of what you won, not what division you played in.

The big clubs have f*cked over the cup good and proper.
By clearly putting out second string teams and concentrating on the Prem/Euro big bucks.
Not gonna change anytime soon.

Re: FA Cup not as exciting?
Personally think its the saturation of football and sport in general we get on TV through Sky Sports. There was a period in the 80's where the only games you could watch on TV were FA Cup games which gave it its special place. Now we can watch live matches everyday seeing two top teams play each other on TV in the cup isn't a novelty anymore
Personally for a football and sport lover this is a positive for me. I would much rather have the dedicated TV coverage for all football and sport than only get to watch odd live games and it be extra special
The FA cup final in its day was so special because it was the only day of the year we got a full days build up to a game but again when Super Sunday came along that just became the norm taking the uniqueness out of cup final day
There are other factors and accept that the importance of the money associated with the Champions League and Premier has changed the top teams priorities but I think that wall to wall television coverage of football has just meant the FA cup has found its true level in peoples interest.
For those who are over nostalgic about the good old days this will be viewed as sad and all that is bad with the modern game but as said above I love the fact i can watch so many live games including watching every Burnley game this season when I cannot get to the match itself

Re: FA Cup not as exciting?
Its not really fair just to blame the big clubs - smaller ones, even in the Championship, are just as guilty of fielding weakened teams, as our game this afternoon will no doubt attest.fatboy47 wrote:The big clubs have f*cked over the cup good and proper.

More than anything though, I blame the FA for systematically trashing its own competition, from the decision to allow the cup holders to withdraw from the competition, the failure to crack-down on the fielding of weakened teams in the way that they used to, to in my mind the worst decision of all, which was to play all semi-finals at Wembley and in the process massively dilute the "special" nature of the FA Cup Final.
I believe they could restore much of the Cup's lustre at a stroke by awarding the winners a European Cup place (I still refuse to call it the "Champions" League) but they won't even do that.
