Yuto Nagatomo/David Santon

Post by agreenwood » Sat Jan 07, 2017 12:01 am

According to reports in Italy we're talking to Inter about their 30 year old Japanese full back Yuto Nagatomo, but they'd rather sell David Santon.

Right-footed left back, like Flanagan.

left sided right footer I believe, I rated him highly a few years ago, was a great fullback, not so sure now though.

Both full back areas are where we should be looking to upgrade, it's vital that you have quality there.

We're competent enough, but when you have top performers there it can make a real difference, particularly going forward, it's where the space is more often than not.

Lowton has been rinsed on occasions against real pace, Montero etc as has Flanagan against Arnautovic.

Apparently he turned down Man Utd due to his love for Inter recently....

I've never heard of this guy before, but on that video he reminds me of a much higher quality Ikechi Anya.

If Football Manager is anything to go by Nagatomo he's ambidextrous and can play on both flanks.

As we know Asia is one country with one race of people, so it can only be good news if we sign him because his fellow countrymen will be flooding on to t'Turf from a far away as Stoneyholme.

Based on those names it looks like we're looking to sell more shirts in Japan and maybe Pontefract.

Edit: Ah. They're both foreign. Wait! I thought we were full.

I know we should put sentiment aside when looking forward, but I think wardy is just fine where he is. It's the other side that needs sorting.

He's right footed so no reason he can't play on the right despite playing left for Inter.

Looks full of running so definitely appears to fit our style based on fitness and pressing. Not afraid to get forward either.

Nagatomo is highly regarded here in japan and is a stalwart of the Japanese Samurai. He`s just got hitched to some actress here so very much doubt she`ll be looking to be spend her weekends at Boundary Mill. File under `not a cat in hell`s chance`. He`ll either move to another `premier`, big city club for a year or two, stay put (the most likely) at Inter or scoot on back over here to live in Tokyo or Osaka. Great player though and someone in his mould would be great.

It's certainly encouraging to see ourselves being linked with players such as Nagatomo and Grosicki. Let's hope there's something in it!

Slightly left field link. Surprised that full back would be seen as a priority given that Flanagan can't dislodge Lowton or Ward, and not too sure about a 5"7 full back in the Premier League given the importance of being decent in the air.

But i see he can play left midfield too, so perhaps thats where we see him playing for us, a little like Matty Taylor.

Not over impressed with these links to an ageing fullback and Barnsley midfielder. I'm all for strengthening the squad but think we have much more need for pacey or creative players. I don't see our defence as a problem at present.
