Personally I don't like Rooney, certainly as an England international I think he's over rated.

However the facts speak for themselves at club level, similar to John Terry.
Both a pair of bell ends but won everything pretty much at club level and Rooney has banged them in fairly consistently.

I thought he was over priced when they first signed him and the whole "buying potential" line was first used to justify his fee from what I remember.
Hes certainly provided value for money though for UTD.

Bobby Charlton' s goalscoring is probably more remarkable but he was surrounded by better players in my opinion, had a settled role and the tactics of the day were to attack, attack, attack attack attack!

Rooney has played under the best, followed by the worst of managers and been moved around the field at a whim without complaining.

Were they in opposite era's I believe Rooney would have been the better player.

Sir Bobby will always be the better man, it's a generation thing.

Bobby Charlton scored his goals from Midfield, Rooney had played predominantly as a striker.
Charlton all day long for me. One of the few World Class English players.
Don't get me wrong Rooney is good, Charlton was Great.

Cannot stand Wayne Rooney. Horrible individual.

Sir Bobby Charlton is one of England's greats. Wonderful player, and a wonderful human being. Always conducted himself properly, played and behaved to the highest standard. A wonderful example to professionals in all sports.

This ain't even close....

If judged on goals alone Dennis Law was better than both.

237 goals from 404 games for United - compared with 249 from 758 games (Charlton) and 249 from 543 games (Rooney).

He also scored a shed-load for Man. City and Huddersfield whereas the others have had narrower careers.

The fitness, athleticism, skill, shots, pace, overhead kicks, headers, beating modern day defenders with trickery and guile. charltons era was a smoking/drinking workmanlike affair. his brother jack got in the world cup team, he was a lumbering carthorse.doubt he would be anything other than division 2 player thesedays. keane is in a different class .

Always an interesting discussion comparing players from different eras. Often hear the argument that modern players couldn't do it on bog like pitches, heavy footballs and agricultural tackling. Counter that, how good could the older players be with modern diet, fitness levels, lighter balls and much less physical contact? Charlton couldn't half hit a ball even back in his days.

Charlton would make the starting 11 of an all time world 11? Meaning you think he is the greatest striker to ever play the game (or 2nd best)? Ahead of Pele, Maradona etc

Charlton wasn't a striker

Rooney was world class, name another player doing what he were between 16 - 20 years of age

I agree, Rooney certainly was world class. Peaked to soon, probably ran out of gas from being a regular since he was 16-17. Nowhere near the same player these days although I think he should leave OT and join a club like Everton where he can play upfront.

No. Charlton could play anywhere in front of the back 4 and be world class. He was acknowledged through training timings to be the best athlete in the England set up. A fact a lot of people don't appreciate as they only see a bald bloke.
Rooney only has to look at a burger to put on 3lb. and this is what has held him back from becoming truly world class. At 16 yo he had the world at his feet. He's collected the medals but that's all.

Best player in the world in 1966 - England could not have won the world cup without him.

Rooney been good player though - he broke the records because he was a man when he was 16 and played at the top level for so long. He's not been at the top level for last couple of years but he was a really great player in his early 20s.

Taking nothing away from Sir Bobby, what he did in his era was remarkable and he is a true legend.

Rooney has been marked down by a lot of people and unfairly so in my opinion. I still think he has the same desire as when he broke into the Everton team and would probably join in a park game with jumpers for goalposts.

Wayne has done what he has done on merit and I seldom hear him blowing his own trumpet.

Wasn't always a midfielder, either. Played on the wing a lot as a club player when wingers scored plenty of goals in a game where teams set out to attack from the first whistle.

The fact that he's stayed at ManUre and won medals only looks good on paper. He should have been so much more.

Don't get hung up on medals. Baresi and Maldini never won the World Cup. Marco Materazzi did.

When Rooney broke onto the international scene against Turkey up to and including the 2004 Euros he looked like the next world superstar. He would of won us that trophy had he not limped off against Portugal but unfortunately he didnt have the self discipline to manage his fitness throughout his career like Rolando or Bale

Never the less you can only compare different generations on stats and Rooney at the very least stands up against Charlton and the truth is it is more his media image than footballing ability that leads to people being over critical of him

Seriously and let's all pause take a deep breath and acknowledge that they played in different eras different pressures different fitness different medical support. A GAME OF WALLY TO DECIDE. Bobby can move the ball though due to age Wayne has to whack it from where it lands.
