Sad news. I remember him getting the guard of honour at Turf Moor when he retired. He became Aston Villa manager not long after that. Football was in his blood obviously.

Holland v England and the German ref.
A Dutchman who was at the game told me there was no way England would get a result.
Germany did not want the English hordes in their country at any price.

He was a genuine human being, much maligned by the press during his time in charge of England. He worked wonders for Watford. RIP Graham

Re: Do I not like that!
I remember Graham Taylor as the Watford team arrived at the Turf seasons ago,the Watford supporters all waiting to welcome their arrival, he signed every autograph, shook hands with the supporters, and even on first name terms with some,a wide smile on his face, and i for one always remembered that, he came across as a genuine Man. who had a few set-backs in Management which have been well Publicised. But that day always stuck in my mind, he did,nt really deserve all the treatment he received in my eyes, from Supporters and Journalists, but thats Football, and sometimes things need putting in perspective R.I.P. Mr Taylor!!!

Don't quite understand that comment 9th May1987. The game with Holland Taylor and the German Ref was to qualify for 1994 World Cup in the USA..

Re: Do I not like that!
Sad news and as above always came across well on the radio.
Re: Do I not like that!
Always seemed like a great person, and one who'd racked up some proper achievements in his career. Thankfully we got a good opportunity to pay tribute to him with that Watford game, there was a really good send-off for him from all 4 stands,
As others have already said, he was really good on the radio too. Sad day.

Re: Graham Taylor Passes Away
A great manager for Watford.RIP
Re: Do I not like that!
Four Four Two did an 'Ask A Silly Question' feature with him in 2009. His answers were pretty good:
Morning, Graham. We’ve been interviewing a lot of Grahams lately. Why are there so many in football?
Because we’re great. And I’m the best Graham – you’ve got to be confident in yourself! You’re only a proper Graham, by the way, if you spell it with an ‘h’ – the English style. I’ve got nothing against the Scots, I love them, but a Scottish Graeme – like Souness – is not a proper Graham.
Barry Fry rates you as the second-best swearer in football after himself, but says: “He can’t swear now he’s a journalist”. Is this true?
[Chuckling] For the last six years I haven’t sworn very much. But I can’t see how anybody could possibly touch Barry at swearing – he’s the master.
Why do football folk cuss so much though, Graham? Surely it’s unnecessary.
Put it this way: if I’ve got Vinnie Jones in my side, and at half-time we’re 1-0 down and playing badly, do I say to Vinnie: “Excuse me Vincent, would you mind trying to get closer to their midfield, please?” Or do I say: “Vinnie, for f***’s sake, sort yourself f***ing out and get f***ing tighter”?
Do you have any weird dreams?
I dream a lot about Scunthorpe United – the only team I’ve supported. I’m the manager, we’re in the Premier League, and beating Barcelona in the Champions League final. It’s great.
What have you got on the wallpaper of your mobile phone?
I’ve just changed it from a big daffodil to a picture of a red and yellow bowl with grass coming out of it. Very pretty. I change it every couple of months, for a bit of variety.
And finally, what’s your favourite swimming stroke?
Breaststroke… but not necessarily for swimming [chuckles].

Re: Do I not like that!
Sadly not the case. As he applauded the Watford fans, Burnley fans were on the pitch spitting at him. It was very distasteful and was certainly no reflection on Taylor.Walton wrote:Always seemed like a great person, and one who'd racked up some proper achievements in his career. Just read, which I hadn't realised, that Taylor was the Watford chairman who appointed Sean Dyche as manager.

'England - An impossible job' Great documentary.
Just read Lawrie McMenemy's autobiography. he said Taylor never told him or the coaching staff that he agreed to do that documentary. Lawrie Mac said to him, once they found out "are you sure this is wise?"....Taylor replied "my decision"
As time has moved on, I think he's remembered fondly with regard to the documentary.
....it probably still is 'an impossible job' !
RIP Graham.

Re: Do I not like that!
RIP Graham Taylor. A highly respected man within the game. An early post #4 stated "not the greatest manager". For a guy who came from a modest footballing background, he well overachieved and his CV looks very impressive. He was a brilliant communicator and always seemed a very likeable guy.
I only recall him being a manager of 3 football clubs and of course England.
Pity he agreed to the documentary which with some cruel editing painted him as a bit of a fool. If he had have been he would never have achieved what he did.

As is being said right through the thread, he always came across as a thoroughly nice man.

Re: Do I not like that!
I also remember being at his final ever game as a manager as it was the last game of the season at The Turf. Not certain which season though. We gave him a guard of honour I think and everyone joined in the applause. Sad to read that it wasn't so friendly afterwards on the pitch. That's a real shame.
