La La Land & Manchester By the Sea

Post by mkmel » Fri Jan 13, 2017 11:15 am

A few days ago I watched both of these films and yes you can believe the hype.

They are excellent films with Emma Stone & Casey Afflek surely up for Oscar nominations as will be both films.

Personally I preferred Manchester By the Sea but can strongly recommend both films.

Cheers, mkmel. Must admit La La Land doesn't look like my bag (each to their own) but Manchester By The Sea sounds well worth watching.

I thought La la land was a documentary about the the land where Saxo spends most of his time.

I just think its a bit rich they get BAFTA nominated before going on general release - good films or not - it simply boosts their launch party and is disingenuous to the quality stuff released in 2016....Grumpy

I see where you're coming from re La La Land but Manchester by the Sea will appeal to both sexes.

Excellent acting in both including by the young lad in Manchester by the Sea whose name escapes me..

Tbh I wouldn't see La La Land again as it's not really my type of film but I will almost certainly watch Manchester by the sea again

I haven't seen Manchester by the Sea but I've heard great reviews.

La La Land, on paper, is the kind of film I'd avoid like the plague; musicals, 'Hollywood', etc - but I was fortunate to see it a couple of month's ago. It's brilliant. Fantastic music and cinematography. Directed by the guys that did Whiplash: if you haven't seen that, add that to your list, too.

Whiplash was brilliant. I highly recommend it to anyone, even if you're not usually a fan of the genre i think the film is good enough that you'll still love it.

Digressing but I've just got my ticket to watch T2 Trainspotting on Tuesday evening.

Doubt it will be up for Oscars though lol

Next on my list of much hyped award fodder to watch is Hunt for the Wilderpeople which does look v.funny.

La La Land will do well at the awards because Hollywood narcissistically loves a film that pays tribute to classic Hollywood (The Artist, Saving Mr Banks etc)

I take it you've seen La La Land then, because I know you wouldn't make that kind of judgement on how good it is without having seen it.

Didn't make any judgement about the film at all, just stated that it is clearly inspired by classic Hollywood musicals and the awards love to reward Hollywood nostalgia.

Quick Google and many see the trend

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a New Zealand film and was one of my favourite films of last year and I see it's just come out on DVD.

You can buy it at HMV for £9 I think it was when I was in the store yesterday
