He plays football and he is from Burnley. Good luck to the lad but he hasn't actually reached the James Anderson level of sporting fame . Become England's highest scorer for example then link him to the town.

I clapped as he went off pre game but nothing at all during the match. It is to each their own but it was probably the loudest song of the afternoon. That made me sad for the players who don't even get a song. Lowton for example who I thought had his best game for us today.

I'd go as far as saying it was embarrassing. :(

Only Barton' s introduction (and goal obviously) were louder receptions.

He applauded all four stands when he left the pitch at the end. The guy never has a bad word to say about us. Yes he's a professional and tried to score, but that's his job. He clearly loves our club and is as much a fan as anyone else. I didn't think it was cringy at all, just respectful to a player who earned his stripes with us and deserves all the luck in the world given recent injuries.

I can't understand singing for an opposition player during a game, no matter who they are. After the game is entirely another matter.

I think the right thing to do would be to applaud him before the game and do the singing about him then. As soon as the whistle blows, he's an opponent.

Stan Ternent used to talk about opposition players who once played for us getting better receptions than our current players, so either you've not been going on for long or you must've once been stone deaf. It's far from the first time!

I thought the reaction was well judged. He got a round of applause when he came on and a quick chant.

It did noone any harm, and the respect in which a player has gone onto better things is held by burnley fans might just have made an impression on the odd player in our ranks. Do things right at Burnley and noone with begrudge you your ambitions. Im not sure that is a bad message and reputation to spread.

was a touch ott and the song had a few squirming but he's a local lad so no harm done.not often ul get a Burnley lad coming back to the turf for the opposition, though you can't help feel if jay rod had scored some on here would of been engaging in a furious circle W@nk

Alan shearer got a tremendous reception from rovers fans when coming back with Newcastle, one greedy b@stard, one lying b@stard etc.. I felt it harsh but it defiantly hurt him and affected his game and helped us to some good results against them..

I can't understand Burnley fans on this one either.. Tell him he was a good un at the end of his career like we do with big al nowadays..

I think he did.....you only had to be at St Mary's when we were beaten there in the FA Cup to see that.

Today the reception was sporting and showed some appreciation for a local lad...of course on this particular day I wanted him to have a mare.

I watched the interview on sky this morning when he said he was proud to come from Burnley.
He also said he was looking forward to coming back as he was home sick.
A very honest interview from a very honest lad.
I was proud we gave him a good reception.

He will always be a Claret. Its in his blood like its in ours.

Jay didn't just once play for us, or simply come through the academy. He is Burnley born and bred, is a Burnley fan and has lots of friends in the stands who no longer get to see him often due to where he now lives. Then there are the Burnley season ticket holding members of his family and relations who are sat amongst us. While I could accept such criticism if it had been for example, Danny Ings, .....actually I don't even know why I'm bothering.

I clapped him and would again.

It doesnt matter who I support, I like and respect Jay's work for us and I am a sucker for nostalgia. The club get my backing, but 10 seconds of clapping for a local lad done good who was a joy to watch at times is fine by me.

Very classy, not much of it left in football. I am sure Jay appreciated it, just as I am sure it wouldn't have made a difference as to whether he scored or not (hence, why the fans were right to do it). Getting overly tribal about it doesn't do the club nor the town any favours imho (and I'm a big fan of boisterous support generally).

Completely OTT during the game. He came own to try and help his team beat us. I support Burnley and the current team above all else. He would have wanted to do his best and score against us above all else. Applaud before or after.
