Do we need to sign someone in this window?
Do we need to sign someone in this window?
Let's be honest, there's a very little chance of us going down this season and we deserve to stay up, instead of signing someone in this window, wouldn't it be better to sign someone better once survival is confirmed? Probably sounds like a strange point but I hope it made some sense lol

We need to sign players who will improve the squad.
Not just sign people for the sake of it.
Not just sign people for the sake of it.
Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
I kind of agree with your thread we should see out the rest of the season with what we have and be safe but the last time we didn't strengthen the next game we paid for it when we lost Marney for rest of the season
Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
I think we will stay up
With the current players we have. Obviously still want to improve on the squad

It is not just a question of "do we need" ?
It's also a question of "do we want" ?
And the answer is YES !
Let's be greedy

We need to sign one player who improves the first 11.
We dont need squad players.

Players come at a premium in the January window. Now you're safe I can't see any significant spending happening until the summer.

Yes...I want my club to go from strength to strength,I don't want to just survive in this league I want to finish as high as we can.
Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
We have a decent sized squad now so numbers aren't an issue. It's really about adding players that can improve the quality of the first 11 or bring something different.

I think we need a goal scorer...week in, week out. I'm happy with the defence and midfield options. Would just like to see a really exciting, attacking team.

Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
Another striker, possibly on loan, as we will need someone if we lose two of Barnes, Vokes and Gray at the same time, and we don't have Bamford as back-up.
Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
Absolutely we do, yes.
The players have performed magnificently and we're sat in a fantastic league position so we must take advantage of that and use it to attract players who'll improve us. Brady is in that category and I hope we get him.

If you don't though, as I've suggested, would you be angry?
I can see the board saying 'were midtable, why spend an overinflated 12-14m on brady(plus wages)?'..

Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
The thing is, for every place higher you finish you get £2 million. So if we sign Robbie Brady for example & finish 12th we'll get an extra £10 million as opposed to us finishing in 17th without him. The transfer pays for itself.

Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
Crystal Palace thought they needed a few signings in the summer to "kick on" and look where it has got them. I'd love a wide man and maybe a top striker but, if they don't fit with the team ethic and significantly enhance what we already have, we don't need them. Brady seems a good fit but I wouldn't like us to be spending money for the sake of it if the right players aren't available.

You only need to see the difference a true top line footballer made when he came on today, and last season for that matter, to realise that we need more of them when ever possible.

Brady really eould be the single addition that I think would vastly improve our first eleven.
Our delivery from wide areas isn't the best, bar Lowton perhaps. Brady would make a big difference in this area.

Let's just shop for whoever is on Sean's wanted list. No-one else needs to be added out of desperation just to get the numbers up. This will also mean that Sean has some spaces for the summer when he can re-assess his wanted list. I would like us to get Robbie Brady if possible.

Anyone who came in this January probably wouldn't be at their best until next season after learning the system etc...
So if we wait til the summer it would be January before they were at full pelt.

As for needing to sign someone - what we need to do is to keep slowly building the squad and getting the players that we want in when we can.

Slowly building the squad and getting the players that we want in when we can is great, but we are on a sound financial footing. We have an opportunity here. If we fail to take it there is absolutely no guarantee that we will come back up again. Yes, I know there is no guarantee that buying now will keep us up, but can we, Burnley, afford to not get a little bit of this powder store moist?
It would be criminal to not grab this with both hands now. Unless the clubs idea of a future is pottering in the championship.
We know what areas need to be strengthened to give us a chance. Yeah it's all well and good remembering how shite we have been, but now we're not. It's the here and now that matters and here and now we are premier league, even if some still think we aren't. Let's grab it like SD grabbed the game today.
We NEED strengthening. And we have NEVER been in a better position to do it than right now. And the rewards have NEVER been greater.
Is the prize not the cause of our labours?

For every Hendrick(I.e. big money) you sign, your wage bill goes up and it becomes more of a gamble to your board. What would you do with a team full of Hendricks if you go down, to lessen the wage bill? You can't sell them all.bobinho wrote:So yes. We need to sign players this window.

However we (1) only spend within our limits and (2) use these little things known as relegation clauses to minimise our losses and keep things reasonable if we do get relegated.Saxoman wrote:For every Hendrick you sign, your wage bill goes up and it becomes more of a gamble to your board. Its a balancing act and a gamble.
Perhaps your club might like to learn from us....

There's the situation also, you get to the summer as a midtable prem club. Players(through their agents) will want reward for that in the form of pay raises, or they may start to look at another club that will instead..
Its not as simple as you think. Players hold all the power these days.

I'm talking about current players, for example do you think mee will continue playing for his current wage next season/for the remainder of his contract after establishing himself as a successful prem centre half? His agent will be plotting as we speak..Guich wrote:Only if you buy the wrong players
How is it that you are so naive to think Burnley players are different to any others?

We need to be constantly improving the squad, you can't stand still, any perspective player now knows they could get at least 18 month premier league football by signing for us, in the summer that would be down to 12 months.

Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
We had players playing out of position yesterday because of the absence of Gudmundsson and Arfield. What happens if we picked up a red card (unlikely based on our record) or another injury or two? We all know we can do with improving out wide (Brady perhaps?) - just imagine where we'd be if we could actually pick up points away from home. One way to do that is to inject a little pace into the team - a little more creativity. So yes, we should think about adding to the squad. Money is not a big problem and we don't need to go crazy. I'd be happy with just the one signing in the form of Brady, Grosicki or whoever. Plus we'll get more money the higher we finish in the table

YES & YES. Every time I see Championship results I think how ever increasingly challenging it would be to get promoted again. If we did go down of course we would not this time have SD to get us back
Good players brought in now will safeguard not only this season but also next. Bear in mind we are carrying 3-4 that technically are not PL standard

Well for a start, the prize being the cause of our labours is the motto of the old County Borough of Burnley and not Burnley Football Club. Neither does it actually mean that.
As for strengthening, starting to bring in too many players too quickly could totally upset what we have. We sensibly did squad building in the summer and that's what I think we should continue doing. Yes, we need strengthening and we are in a good position, but don't let that get in the way of the sensible approach that has got us into this position.

Re: Do we need to sign someone in this window?
In answer to the OP most definitely. Take a look at yesterdays scenario. With both Arfield and JBG injured SD had to take a risk playing a clearly not 100% Marney. OK we got away with it but who knows if the injury to Marney has been exacerbated by playing him yesterday?
If all our players were fit and none suspended you may have an argument for not signing anyone but this is not a perfect world and there will always be players carrying knocks who would benefit from a rest. It's very much a squad game nowadays and I personally think we have two areas that need strengthening and that is out wide and central midfield.
On the central midfield situation any news of how Freddy Ulvestad is doing?
