Mackem fans

Post by Woodleyclaret » Wed Jan 18, 2017 5:35 am

Great supporters who deserve better for their loyalty. Not many teams having been beaten 4-1 a few weeks before would have had so many fans turn up for a game on a wet Tuesday evening that they would likely loose.
Class fans.

I thought they held back on their players magnificently, absolutely no fight hardly anything to shout about, the majority lasted much longer than I thought they would.

Aye!! We're a stupid bunch really!! We'll turn up in numbers whatever the occasion.

Although, if that second had gone in after 60 mins we'd have been off!!

Totally agree Woodley. I mentioned on another thread how impressed I was with their support. Good numbers and were reasonably vocal too until they could quite clearly see where the game was going for them. I don't mind Sunderland and would much prefer them to stay up. You compare them to Boro and realise which is the nicer club that's for sure.

Felt that sorry for them I didn't even go to the park view to give the coaches the traditional 'victory V' send off. And that's normally my favourite bit of a home win

Great support, loud and got some good songs out about their current downward curve.

The mixture of beer and frustration was getting to a few towards the end. Then after the game quite a few calmed down

True genuine Fans. That stick with it through thick and thin, truth is they have been shortchanged by the snr club management for a number of years. I don't feel for many rival fans but I did for them last night.

I'm a bit biased because one of my best mates is a Mackem but I always think their fans are a bit similar to ours with their passion, albeit they have a lot more than we do. Sunderland, again on a larger scale, is a bit like Burnley in that the football club is the main focal point of their city just as Burnley is in our town.

Mackems fans are more grounded in reality than their Geordie neighbours who are prone to excessive optimism and exaggeration about all things Newcastle United. Rivalry was probably based on which of Sunderland or Newcastle is the capital of the north east but, as a citizen of Newcastle, there is only one answer to that!

I always knew I was going to like this board!! :-)

Agree with all of the above, I definitely see many similarities.

The amount of people I heard in the away end last night saying 'I quite like these' was massive!!

I'm going to post a thread about it later but I wonder if this is partly down to the 1995 at Turf Moor?

In brief we played at Turf moor and there were thousands of us in a standing part of a side stand.

I have NEVER EVER felt so worried about how many people were in our away end.

Anyway we drew 1-1 and the banter pre and post match was brilliant. Both sets of fans seemed to get on really well. Guessing it probably started before then but it probably helped?!

I wrote about it in the book - I would love to know the exact figure of how many fans we had in that end that day!!

I remember meeting a giant of a mackem about six foot six in his colours by the bus station back in the 70s. We walked in together chatting about each other's clubs. Very knowledgeable about our history and very respectful about our town and fans. Great bloke. Always remembered him.

A neighbour/good mate is a Mackem fan who I 'tweaked' a little when we beat them 4-1. I gave him a 'bye' last night as it would have been like clubbing a baby seal.

I always loved it as a kid in the 1970's when Sunderland came to the Turf. Plenty of singing creating a great atmosphere from the Roker Park lot. Generally I think most Burnley fans have some affection for Sunderland with some recognised similarities. Burnley is a well loved little club proudly holding their own in the Premier. League. Sunderland a well loved bigger club!

I was a steward at the 1985 League Cup final in the Sunderland end. Walker missed a pen and Norwich won 1-0, but the fans were great. I also enjoyed watching the impromptu pre match kick about between both sets of fans in the car park outside Wembley until there were too many cars and coaches to play anymore.

I went to Sunderland for an away during the first promotion to the EPL and the locals were proper friendly. I have held a positive opinion since. The Sunderland team badly let down the supporters last night. The problems run a bit deeper. Another case of bad ownership through a combination of incompetence and misfortune (Big Sam's departure).

As Burnley fans we are fortunate at the minute because regardless of talent, our lads work hard and they have done since Dyche got them playing his way. The contrast only increased my sympathy for the Sunderland fans.

I took a Mackem with me into Jimmy Hargreaves Lower. His cover wasn't broken due to the rubbish Sunderland played and he clapped all Burnley's chances to keep warm. I think he actually had a good night, they are a decent lot.

If ever the term 'shcadenfreude' applied, it's when reading this Sunderland board. I almost feel bad for laughing at some of their comments - especially those where some of our supporters' genuine, heartfelt sympathy is scorned and rejected. Many of them won't believe it but many Burnley fans know exactly how they feel at the moment and can fully sympathise. We've been there many times in the past - and it has been a lot, lot worse.

Went to the Stadium of Light on a Friday night as part of a stag weekend a few years ago. Our minibus driver took a wrong turn near the ground and we ended up stuck on a side street surrounded by a mass of fans in red & white.

There was no option other than to get the Burnley songs going, open up the doors and spill into the street with a peace offering of beers, wine, spirits and 'special' cigarettes. We jumped back on the bus and there was a parting of the waves to allow us through. Smiles all round.

I think we scored a fantastic goal (Wade Elliott ?). I have no idea of the result.

As good as his goal at Wembley was that.

Nowhere near as important.

Best mate is a Mackem.

Was sat with me in JML on NYE and by the time of the 4th goal I felt I had to tone down my celebrations

Last night he was in the CFS.
I messaged him after the game saying at least he didn't have the long journey home that the majority had, as he only had to get to Padiham :D
