Re: Marney injury
Marney is the heartbeat of the team. He's more limited than our other midfield options but he epitomises everything that a Sean Dyche team is about. We're fairly well stocked in that position now so a lengthy injury to Marney may not prove as catastrophic as it was 2 seasons ago, but make no mistake losing Marney for a significant period of time would be a big blow.

Barton (potential ban)
Marney (potential long lay off)
Hendrick
Defour
O'Neill
We definitely need one at least in there now.

By fairly well stocked I mean, in Marney's absence, we still have 3 fit and proven midfielders. Compare this to last time when we had Dave Jones.DCWat wrote:I'm not sure we are well stocked.

We needed to bring in a midfielder before Marney's injury, I'd suggest we definitely need to now.

Re: Marney injury
3 fit and proven midfielders isn't enough though in my book. We need at least 4 fit and proven central midfielders. O'Neil will of course be classed as the next Paul Gascoigne until he's played more minutes for us, but I see him as a 5th choice at best and it seems that Dyche even prefers a centre back ahead of him.
Definitely 1 more central midfielder good enough to make the first 11 needed imo.

Re: Marney injury
Of course anyone would wish Marney a quick recovery but for me at this level I see him as a squad player, he is however the epitome of an SD player, heart action endeavour just a tad short on quality.

Simply clueless. Jack of all trades? He has always played one role for us. And he's been very good at it. One of my favourite players over the last few years. Him driving our play has been crucial. Re: Marney injury
Marney is an experience pro who does the groundwork which largely goes unnoticed.
Positional sense, anticipation, space marking and break-up tackling are his qualities. He may not contribute many goals or deliver the champagne passes but boy will we miss a player of his ilk if we don't find a replacement.

If it's an ACL injury, at his age, his career is as good as finished.KeighleyClaret wrote:Reasonably certain its an anterior cruciate injury. When he was lying on the pitch the Physio checked his knee by doing an anterior draw test, following which he had his leg strapped up and was put on a stretcher. Pretty sure that the Pysio suspected an ACL tear, I don't know if its the same knee or not though. This will make a difference to repair / recovery.
The MRI will show for definite but he may not necessarily have this done immediately.

Re: Marney injury
The fact that he needs the MRI scan is gutting enough for Deano - regretfully I don't recall any of our players coming away from the scanner in recent times with anything other than terrible news.
Marney's professionalism has never been in doubt but he has become a much better player since Dyche took charge. He's hugely influential and an integral cog in our works. Our record with him in (rather than out) of the team speaks volumes.
Good look Dean - got everything crossed.

Do hope his injury isn't as serious as it potentially might be.
Irrespective of whether it is or not we do need someone else in.
We can't take the risk of losing another midfielder and finding ourselves short and unbalanced.

Re: Marney injury
Strange things complete ACLs injuries cos the ligament has actually snapped and as it is no longer connected, after the initial shock of the force of it, there is not the pain or load problems associated with partial ligament tears or breaks etc even a hamstring tear or ankle sprain could initially hurt more. and will initially feel worse and be more debilitating. obviously the day after and from then on your knee acts like it's been in a car crash.
Remember Deano walked off at half time after his last ACL and wanted to return for the second half.
So I'm hoping it turns out to be more routine ligament damage, as he stayed down and it was obviously hurting.
He's a legend for me and many others.
Good Luck Deano

Re: Marney injury
I find it pretty distasteful to be on here claiming a player might be finished without knowing the full facts.
Re: Marney injury
I hope he's not out for a long period obviously, but I'm with ABC on this one (never thought I'd say that!) in as much as I don't think he should be in the starting 11 these days.
The last couple of games in particular have completely passed him by. Couple that with how well Barton, Hendrick and Defour played together against Sunderland and it just proves the point even more.
Don't get me wrong, he's a useful player, but I don't think he does anything better than the others we have. It feels like a complete waste having him in the middle and Defour wide left. A bit like playing Scholes wide left for England.
Hopefully he's not out for long as he'll be needed between now and May, but I think we can cope without him currently.... unless Joey B gets a 10 match ban that is!!

Of course people are going to speculate on the injury. That does not mean that to a man (even those who do not value him as highly, unlike me) do not wish him nothing but the best towards a speedy and full recovery.Papabendi wrote:I find it pretty distasteful to be on here claiming a player might be finished without knowing the full facts.

Re: Marney injury
To be fair, I think it's fair to state that a 33 year old with a history of knee problems who is facing 12-18 months out could well be finished.

Whatever the injury i am very clear that Deano has been a magnificent signing and I really hope that he is bac in the squad soon.
If this is the end he will a massive miss.

What's the chances of losing Deano just after Lansbury finally leaves Forest.

Simply not true, sorry. Even if its an ACL tear in the same knee a second repair should only be 6-9 months (only!) and no reason why he cannot come back from it.Lord Beamish wrote:If it's an ACL injury, at his age, his career is as good as finished.

Re: Marney injury
A truly under rated player. He has been the engine for our team for 4 or 5 years. People make out that he's poor at passing but he actually provides some very good cross field passes. The only area of his game that "lacks quality" is his shooting. Had a quieter couple of games recently as he has clearly been carrying an injury. He epitomises the Dyche ethic, everything down to being one of the first to sign a reduced contract. If his career is finished by injury then I hope he signs a coaching role and delivers his passion on to the next generation.
I love Dean Marney.

Re: Marney injury
Gutted for the man, it looked nasty the way he rolled about like Rivaldo, he's hard our Deano so I feared straight away it was a bad one. He's been a bloody good player for us in a position we'd had problems in for a long while and notably got one of those long range volleys, not only under the bar, but in the back of net recently. We've got a much deeper midfield squad than I can ever remember as a Burnley fan but he'll still be a big loss. Speedy recovery Dean.
edit:
Forgot to add he did this in spite of the stigma of being a Laws signing (a while ago but no small thing).

I'm sure we will be prepared for this after what happened to him in the last Prem season. At least we have a few days left to sort some cover out.

Post 62 actually a fair summary by ABC. Been a good signing no doubt about that though. Hope it's not as bad as appears.

Not really given Marney has had another good season and his injury was often cited as the reason we got relegated last time - he's more than a 'squad player' to us.Blackrod wrote:Post 62 actually a fair summary by ABC. Been a good signing no doubt about that though. Hope it's not as bad as appears.
Re: Marney injury
To be honest I am shocked by some of the comments on here about Deano, he has been a fantastic player for Burnley, a player not many years ago who was way out of our league, short memories a lot like them lot down the road....
I wish him all the best and can't wait to see him involved in what ever role he can for the club in the future on or off the field..

Re: Marney injury
Given his age we'd almost certainly have been looking for Marney's long-term replacement in the next couple of transfer windows anyway. Hopefully his injury isn't long-term or serious but however bad it is, all that will be happening now is the need to find his successor will have moved a notch or two further up the priority table, assuming he isn't already here in Hendrick.
Big week ahead for our transfer team.

Deano has been/is absolutely fantastic for us. I know he got some stick a few years ago and I couldn't believe it. I've rated him from day one and would be gutted if he doesn't play for us again this season. He's got to be the only player who would try and "run off" a knee ligament injury!? He puts to shame all the so called superstars who go off "injured" as soon as they get a hair out of place. As Enola says above we will be looking for his replacement but, bloody hell, he's been class for us.

Re: Marney injury
It was clear how important Marney was when we realised we couldn't win games without him. I don't think that's the case now, thanks to a bit more strength in depth. But we still need another central midfielder.
