review system

Post by banjo79 » Sun Jan 22, 2017 4:54 pm

yes i'm annoyed, yes it's still raw, but there's got to be some scope for a review system in football. like NFL, give manager's a couple of review chances per half. they dont stop the game and give ref's a chance to overturn wrong decisions. the arsenal lad was offside no debate.. so no foul and no pen. guess it'd have to happen in a high profile world cup game for anything to happen, like goal line tech. grumble grumble.
that aside, very proud of the lads today - epic shift.

They recently piloted it in the World Club Championship... and still got it wrong!

If there was a review system then there's a chance Barnes wouldn't have got our penalty.

Other refs wouldn't have given it.

Yes there was contact, but there was also a delay in when he went down.

Also Barnes had already caught someone with his elbow, so a review system could've seen him sent off today.

A manager should have the power to review any decision that isn't open to interpretation.

With a review system today, I reckon we'd still be playing now!

Agree about the elbow.

I agree about how the pen came about, but still was a pen.

The Ben Mee was also a pen, but offside should have been given.

I think the only decisions that should ba allowed to be contested, are ones in the 18 yard box.

Sidney - I would still take "still a chance" - I was dubious at first glance over Barnesys pen, and my Man Utd son said no definite pen. It was

The Off side was clearly off side side so that would have resulted in a draw?

There were that many flashpoints today, many of them debatable, that it's impossible to say. All I know is, I don't want football becoming stop/start like NFL or Rugby.

You have a lot to say on here for an absolute coward of a man who came on here to winge about something a fan said at a game that you didn't like but never confronted him.

And even though the review system as a decent success rate in cricket it does take a lot of ******* about to reach a conclusion. It would kill football because you can't put a time limit on reaching the correct decision.

Don't need video review, just decent officials. If your view is good enough to see the foul, it should be good enough to spot the offside beforehand. No excuse.

Linesmen are always going to get decisions wrong though because it's such a split second decision from when the ball is kicked. Not only do they have to look down the line they have to time exactly the moment the ball leaves the foot. Human error, part of the game.

I think one decision per half per team would be fair especially as the goal has denied us 2 points this season which could cost us 100m in the long run!

Even watching a reply on sky would be more than adequate!

It works well in Rugby. Works in cricket.

Time to use it.

Ok, cricket is an all day game but if the football lasts an extra 10 mins would it hurt. No.

KRBFC of course people are human and can get things wrong but take a look at the linesman's position and view
He was dead level and had a clear view
He was almost a yard offside !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If he was being marked by anyone he's next appointment should be specsavers

As in NFL all `goals`(touchdowns) should be automatically reviewed. Arsenal would now have 4 points less this season from our games alone. Way too much at stake to rely on one individuals decision (right or wrong)

No they shouldn't. The flow and spontaneity of real football is one of the many factors that makes it a better spectator sport than American Football.

Worth mentioning a review system yesterday would have resulted in an Arsenal penalty for the foul by Gray.

In a game that is now worth billions of pounds a year we deserve more than some 55 year old bloke from Chippin Norton who has never kicked a ball in his life making decisions on the outcome of games.

Look at the Walker push on Sterling on Saturday. How is it even possible for the officials to not see that ? There is nobody in shot but the 2 players and the ball is 5 yards away from Walker who makes the most blatant push you will ever see. How can it be right for this to be not given ?

I don't want the game to be stop start every 5 minutes either so it could be limited in some way - either by restricting this to incidents in the box or limiting the number of referrals each team can make.

The number of game changing incidents which have gone against Burnley this year is ridiculous - and this rubbish about "it evens out over a season" is nonsense - we would need a penalty wrongfully awarded to us nearly almost every game for the rest of the season.

Most people in the game think it's time to use video technology. Not sure how "mistakes" can be an enjoyable part of the game personally....and the big teams who are playing in front of 60,000 plus fans with managers as influential in the game as Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho etc will get more in their favour than smaller clubs like us.

Human errors should even themselves out over a game/season.
They don't. When you are up against a 'top' team you tend to get sod all.
I thought Miss had a good game yesterday but was seriously let down by yet another weak linesman.

Interesting debate that sparks different viewpoints! How about this (like the NFL thought above):

When a goal is scored the play in the lead up to the goal (<1min) is automatically reviewed to see if there is any reason that the goal should not be allowed. Only if there is a clear objective reason then the goal can be overturned. This would take say 2 mins - approx 1 min of which the players are celebrating and play hasn't even started anyway. Should the goal be disallowed for any reason then play starts with the team that just conceded restarting from the centre spot (which they are about to do anyway if it was a goal).

Also a directive should be given that referees should look to allow advantages more often as the period of play is potentially about to be reviewed for a goal, and linesmen should not call marginal offsides but allow play to continue as if a goal is scored there will be a review anyway.

Not perfect and you could say that a marginal offside given leads to a corner and a goal 2 minutes later, but you can't have everything, and the total extra hold up time for reviews would be 3-4 minutes a game on average (assuming it can be done within 2 mins of the goal being conceded).

I watched the first half of the NFL game last night. As it was pretty one-sided I didn't bother with the second half and watched a film instead. When the film finished the American Football was still going on with interminable delays for challenges, video reviews, timeouts, etc

If a system can be implemented where the decision is instantaneous (e.g. goal-line technology) then fair enough. There's not much in football that is that binary though, anything that's open to interpretation (fouls, handballs, etc) are always going to take time to review.

Yesterday's game demonstrates why we should and could never have a review system. All of yesterday's contentious decisions except the offside of Koschelny, could have been replayed to death and you would not get a concensus of opinion, even amongst other referees!
