Rest In Peace Dad

I am sure many of you have gone through a similar circumstance in your lifetimes. My dad (Ray Jones), a season ticket holder in the Hargreaves Upper and lifetime Burnley fan passed away last Thursday after a short illness.
In his lifetime of supporting (first game circa. 1952) he has saw us lift the title, play in Europe, fall from grace and almost fall out of the league, and then lived just about long enough to see us back up where we belong.
I remember as a kid traveling to places like Stockport, Rochdale and Crewe just hoping we'd scrape a point or three to help us stay up. It was the worst of time, but it was the best of times.
He won't be using his season ticket the rest of the season, but we will all be there on Saturday for the Bristol City game. It may be meaningless to some but it will be hugely significant for us.

Sorry to hear your sad news.
I played cricket with and against your dad and he was a real gent, great competitor until we got in the clubhouse.
It was only on Friday last week that I was looking at the old pros board and said to the chairman that I hadn't seen a Ray for a couple of years. It must have been his way of letting us know. He'll be missed by many.

Sorry to hear this mate.

Remember his life and the impression he left on you means he will never truly be gone.

Share your memories of him with loved ones, tell stories and just laugh at the good times.

Yes my dad was a cricketer... even up to his death at 72. Played for Ribblesdale Wanderers, Pendle Forest, Gargrave, Cowling, Blackburn Northern and Withnell Fold amongst others! Even played internationally for Spain while living out there.

Outside of my love for Burnley FC, one of the only things keeping me interested in Football these days is going on the Turf with Pa Beamish. I would seriously question whether or not I'd have an ST if I wasn't sat next to him, watching the game and enjoying the slings and arrows of our outragious fortune.

I feel for you, Hanover. I'm seeing more and more the shadow of my old man's mortality these days; he's 68 this year. He's still vibrant, but not as immortal as he seemed when I was less Worldy Wise.

Please stay strong fella, it's tough but do it for those around you and as years pass you will know you coped the right way.

Sincere condolences Hanover. I guess most of us were introduced to the Clarets by our dads. I certainly was and its one of the many things I thank him for. No one can take away those many memories from you ....you will treasure them forever.

Watching Burnley with my Dad is one of the best experiences and memories I have. He's 90 now and doesn't like the cold so I have to pick my matches.

Awful time Hanover. Most of us must face losing a parent at some point but that doesn't make it any easier.

I lost my dad in January 2009. He always said Burnley won't make the big time in my lifetime. 4 months later we were at Wembley winning promotion the the Premier League, done it twice since and now hopefully cementing our place there.

You'll never stop missing him mate. Just remember the good times and he eill always be there. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

Reading your post and replies is a reminder of what a great family sharing thing it is to be football fan, particularly fathers and sons.

The first match that my late Dad took me on was when I was about 6 to watch the great George Best in his pomp, unfortunately I hadn't got the football bug at that time so didn't really appreciate it. We did enjoy many games together in later years. I now go on the games with my 24 year old son who has been a fan from the age of about 8.

It's very painful losing a parent, but you will have many great memories to enjoy in the future.

Played cricket against your Dad in the Craven League. He was and probably still is the record wicket taker in a season in his Pendle Forest days, 98 from memory. Couple of years ago he got me out lbw, although I was convinced it was too high. Never realised he was a Claret. RIP Ray, he was a complete Gent.

I still remember my Dad everyday.

I also posted a thread like this 13 years ago back in the day of C Mad.

I had so many lovely posts from the Clarets family to help me.

We printed them out, Unfortunately like everything else my EX kept them, so were lost forever.

Treasure every comment as it shows just what a great people Burnley fans really are.

My thought are with you and your family, remember the joy he gave you.

NRC- ha my son only made it to 6'9"! Failure eh!
Craven- yes I'm pretty sure he still has the record. Not sure on exact number but I know it was over a hundred as he was presented with the ball he got the 100th with.
His last game was in November in Spain. Was determined to play again this coming season as it would have been his 60th season! A real "Grezza"!

Sorry for your loss, Hanoveruseclaret. I know what you mean about the dark days being the great days. I travelled all over the country with my mum watching us lose at Stockport and York etc. Felt horrible at the time but I really miss those times now.

it is so sad . many have been introduced to the clarets through dads. such a poignant theme.
I often think of what my dad would make of the place we are in now.
I can never go on a single game and not think of him at some stage.

Sorry for your loss Hanoverusaclaret, my dad died 2 years ago next week. It still hurts, but you only seem to remember the good times. He was a Claret for over 60 years, and also loved his cricket. He was an umpire in the Lancashire league for years.

Never a truer word said. My dad died before I could say goodbye, and it kills me that it happened that way.
So those who fathers are still with us, give him a hug and enjoy your time together because you never know when the inevitable will happen.
