Defour speed

Post by Newcastleclaret93 » Sun Jan 29, 2017 9:28 am

Does anyone think Defour is surprisingly quick?
A few times this season I have thought he is pretty quick. Watching the counter attack yesterday he must have got from box to box in under 10 seconds

Yeah he's quite deceptive. Most good players have that initial burst of speed.

Dunno exactly how quick it was but he wasn't hanging about.

When passed to gudmondsson the burst of pace to get into the position to chip was pretty impressive.

His sudden acceleration when he decided where he needed to be for that wonder goal was exhilarating, I have watched it countless times just for that!

By top level football standards he's average at best

Think he's got a burst of accelaration that marks out the best players, so he's quick over 5-10 yards, and also like a top player he antipates things well. He gets to a lot of loose balls first because of this.

Hes not that quick i don't think over 40 yards, but that doesn't necessarily matter in his position.

His problem has been that the pace at which teams move the ball in the prem still takes him by surprise a bit because he's been trained to understand a much slower tempo. But when the ball breaks loose, that ceases to matter so much.

Agree with Spice, it's his thought process that's quick.

He does have short bursts.
But it's his speed of thought that impressed me most.

He covered a lot of ground pretty quickly for his goal.

Hes quick enough, that is for certain. But in a race over 40 yards i reckon he'd be beaten comfortably by both Marney (when fit) and Hendrick. Hes not athletic like those two are for example.

As others have said, what i really meant was his great strength alongside his speed off the mark is his speed of thought.

This is the key point. If you watch it again you see that when he passed the ball he started to slow down so defenders naturally went away from him but that gave him the space and he then decides to accelerate giving JBG the option of laying him on.

His intelligence lead to the defenders gravitating around the ball and other players. So rather than his outright pace it's his intelligence which gives him the empty space to run into.

Defour and Barton both anticipate the game better than anyone I've ever seen in a Burnley shirt.

One of my favourite football quotes:
"His pace is very deceptive,he"s slower than he looks"
Shankley on Larry Lloyd.
