Sequels better than first films
The thread on T2 got me thinking about this. Usually sequels are inferior crap, but are there exceptions to the rule? For example, I think The Empire Strikes Back is better than Star Wars. Any others?

Re: Sequels better than first films
Bill & Teds Bogus Journey is better then Excellent Adventure.
From the looks of it, John Wick 2 could be better then the first one and that was an excellent film.

Re: Sequels better than first films
There aren't any. There are a number that are as good or possibly explore a slightly different theme from the original but sequels are usually inferior because what made the original worth making a sequel is not quite the same in the sequel.
Empire is perhaps a more satisfying film than Star Wars but is it really better? Hmmm. Ok. it's the exception that proves the rule
T2 is nowhere near a better film than the first. Better effects yep, Better film? Nonsense.
Godfather 2 is a great film that expands the world of the Corleone family and that makes it as good as the first. not better though.

Toy story 2
Re: Sequels better than first films
Maybe if your a spotty 14 year old sci fi geek creaming yourself at revolutionary new special effects(at the time). The original was far superior in my book as a film, T2 is a comedy..ClaretAndJew wrote:Terminator 2 end thread cheers.

Ah - good shout on Toy Story 2 although I'd put it in the "as good as" category. Toy Story breaks through the boundary. the sequel then explores a bit more.

Re: Sequels better than first films
oh - the horse raper is correct. Terminator is a classic piece of cinema that uses Arnie's delivery in a brilliant way. Making him the hero (simply because he's gone past the threshold of playing bit parts/odd parts and had to be the lead draw) was a bad move because it lost the cold darkness that made the first one so good.
Re: Sequels better than first films
The scene in tech noir where hes reloading standing above the prone Sarah Connor. Scary..
Yep, terminator is brilliant.

Seconded. I adore all of those films but the pacing in FotR was all over the place. It's still close to masterpiece category (for me at least) but The Two Towers is better in almost every way.KefkaClaret wrote:LOTR - The Two towers

You want to be different for the sake of it and pretend things are good that are really just pap, then go right ahead.. I'll go with what I know is good from popularity.Wile E Coyote wrote:never seen that one saxo, i cannot recall the original "mr obscure" movie.

no, you'll watch anything, animated singing pigs, cartoon lions on rocks, squawking bog eyed characters, and predictably accompanied by some dirge musical soundtrack. Your type cannot stray to far from the herd, far too dangerous.Saxoman wrote:You want to be different for the sake of it and pretend things are good that are really just pap, then go right ahead.. Not true. I think 'trainspotting' is one of the most overrated films ever. Saxo and Wile E go head to head. A real clash of this messageboard's intellectual big-hitters. It's going to be like Gore Vidal and William F Buckley Jr, slugging it out for dominance.
