Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
There is nothing like giving a player a decent chance is there.
Sam Vokes wasn't rated by Wolves. Dean Marney wasn't rated by Spurs or that highly by Hull. Trippier and Mee were not seen as Premier standard by City. Keane wasn't rated good enough for United.
But hey Aston Villa fans are the font of football knowledge, some people rate Villa fans opinions higher than SD's.... they know how we're going to play him and the formations he will be asked to play in that might suit him. Some people are beyond belief.

Jones was one of the best central midfielders we've had since football was invented in 1992.

We all have that colleague who is not really up to their job but has an excellent attitude, never calls in sick, moans and is willing to graft. Certain Managers tend to like these types of people.Sidney1st wrote:120 PL appearances in 4 years at Villa and 23 appearances this season for them so far.....
Yet he's not good enough?
Sounds like the same sort of stuff said about David Jones by some people.
Clearly Dyche is going to use him to chase after people to deny space and pass it sideways/backwards to someone with more ability to pick out a pass.
So Westwood to Mee.... Hoooooooof. And repeat.
Would rather have another Defour type player. Lansbury would have been a better.
Clearly Bruce thinks so aswell.
Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
Exactly my thoughts. If he was THAT bad there's no way we would have won two automatic promotions with him as a mainstay of the team. Jonah did a hell of a good job for us. He was perfect for both Marney and Barton to play alongside as he complimented them perfectly. Yes he wasn't an "in your face" type player and he didn't get you off your seat, but he was extremely effective at his job in SD's framework.dsr wrote:David Jones played 87 games over two Championship seasons in which we finished 2nd and 1st. Anyone trying to make out he was a bad signing is an idiot. IMO.
If Westwood is like Jones, but with a bit more Premier class, what's the problem? Sounds like a good signing.

Pretty impressive ability to ignore the evidence of your own eyes AND then regard as gospel the comments made by fans of a team who bring the term "underachieving" to a whole new level.

Only on here can our own "supporters" be slagging off a player that they've never seen play, or at best know little about.
Shocking.

Right winger....a.k.a. right whinger.
You need a blend in mi9dfield. You need players like Defour but they look bobbins without a terrier there to break things up and win possession. You cannot have any clue how Westwood will perform for us he's clearly been unsettled at Villa for a while.... they thought he was a world beater a couple of years ago.

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
I find what you've said here a little contradictory. If Dyche is going to use Westwood to distribute the ball to those around him with more ability, then surely it won't be to have Mee hoof it every time? I understand wanting another Defour type player. But the fact is that we do have Defour and Westwood would be able to get the ball to him. Perhaps even to Brady as well. Dyche's system requires players like Marney, Westwood etc. Let's give him a chance.Right_winger wrote:We all have that colleague who is not really up to their job but has an excellent attitude, never calls in sick, moans and is willing to graft. Can those who said we weren't signing anyone before the deadline please make themselves known?
I'm sure someone said they'd make a donation to charity... or did I imagine that?

Re: Ashley Westwood £5m bid accepted
Anyone coming from Villa has endured a few years of hell including Paul Lambert AND Tim Sherwood. Just imagine that - it's been enough to uttely destroy a couple of players.Braindead wrote:He looks absolutely thrilled - guessing he has just been reading Right Whinger's comments?
It took Lowton a bit of time to readjust to life on the outside again. It might take Westwood a little time.
Think of him as a rescue puppy - shower him with love and we've got ourselves a player of immense talent and ability. This could really prove to be the bargain of the season if Sean Dyche can get him playing well.
Welcome to Burnley Ashley!

Pointing out what Villa fans are saying is hardly slagging off a player ,on a personal level it will make it all the better when he is a success and I can rub their noses in it .fidelcastro wrote:Only on here can our own "supporters" be slagging off a player that they've never seen play, or at best know little about.

235..right_winger - YOU SAY
'Yeah because that's all he did. No ability to do anything else. Jones mk2 this: hope he gets nowhere near a starting place'
I read that and I thought..'gotta reply to that'..by the time I had logged on and plugged the kettle in, about a dozen people had said what I wanted to say..
Even before the bloke has signed his contract with us, you're slagging him and writing him off; there are some Burnley 'fans' who really shouldn't call themselves that..give the lad a chance please..? You must have very superior football knowledge compared to most on here, to be so free with your 'opinions'...how many times have you seen him play?
For the record I thought Jones was a good player for us, and did what Dyche wanted him to do.
**BBC 5 live confirming Westwood's signature.

There were a few on here who were glad to see the back of Lucas Juke.
Blues fans would probably see it differently....
Perhaps we should make a call on him after 12 months or so.

Looks like Marneys replacement, will prob start on bench with Defour and Barton in the middle most matches (hopefully)
Lets see if he's any good, happy to give him time to show his qualities.

Another bonus with this bump is some of the comments on earlier pages, for the first time in a high percentage of fans on here lifetime of going to Burnley games (or crying in your armchair during games) we have maintained top flight status and still some have cried all through the season.
Imagine how much fun you could have had if only you had just enjoyed yourselves.

On it now, the David Jones comparisons, followed by rejections of both players made me laugh a lot.

Dear my younger self,IndigoLake wrote:Can't be a bad player with over 100 Premier League appearances. I honestly don't put much stock in what fans of other clubs think. Arfield is an often used example of how a player can exceed expectations with a change of club and most importantly, manager. You spoke a lot of sense. Well done.
