Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Just wondered if anyone still thinks we'll be around the bottom 4-5 places at the end of the season.
Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
No, not really although I'm not banking on anything until it's mathematically impossible for us to go down.
One game at a time.
One game at a time.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
I think it will be a massive struggle to end up anywhere near where we are now.
In all honesty, I would've taken 17th at the start of the season. Id take it now. But I think we will do better than that.

When we've got enough points for safety then we'll be out of that fight. Until then, like everyone else from 10-20th, we're in the fight.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
If it wasn't my club I'd say " they are safe " but as it is mine & it's Burnley I still have a fear of going 15 or so without a win and the bottom 3 winning tons on the spin. Perhaps it's just a Burnley thing.
My head however says we are almost safe. What a position to be in. Avoid defeat @ Hull, Swansea, Sunderland & Bournemouth ( they are in bother, I'm sure of it ) and we'll be safe as houses. I will however be mighty relieved when there is a 40 next to our name

Three more wins will almost certainly keep us up. I can't see us not getting them the way that we're playing. Strengthening yesterday hasn't done any harm either. We're 16/1 for relegation, bookies don't get it wrong too often.

Hold on Guich, let's see what happens to Stoke and West ham tonight. Otherwise then 9th!!!!!! Reading from the Pl top downwards last night cheers like you wouldn't believe except probably everyone else is feeling the same.

Posted on the magic numbers thread.
3 wins takes us to 38 points.
I can't see how 3 of the bottom 6 will get to 38.
Given that they have to play each other and the sides battling for the CL.
There will be upsets but not enough to bother us.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
I think the 9 away games to 6 home games is a concern
As is the fact that the home games contain Chelsea, Spurs and Man U and that Stoke,West Brom and West Ham mean that all the Home opponents are in the top 11.
On the flip side we still have 7 of the bottom 8 to play away,
The home form may now be tougher to maintain but the away form could turn round.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
There is no evidence to suggest we are relegation candidates now.
I thought we were after playing West Brom and Southamption away but even away performances are better now. We will win away games now.
I think we might drop a bit in March though but by that time we should have enough of a buffer from the bottom three in the bag by then.

I think last night was the first time, vocally, that quite a few fans believe we are staying up. The performance last night just had that feel we are too good to down and I really think we are. It won't be easy still as you can suddenly lose a few on the bounce in this league but I think our squad and their mentality will see us through.

With the away fixtures coming up I'd say we're still in it unless the away form improves.
By improve, I mean, we need an odd win or a couple of bore draws just to take the pressure off. I'm sure realistically we'll get the points needed

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Based on last night's display alone I'd say we should be safe. Strange how until recently performances seemed worse to me but results better than the last premier league campaign.
We seem to have made real headway in the last few and have seemed a lot more confident, preformances on the pitch seem to be finally coming with results and I honestly can't remember the last time I felt so optimistic as a Burnley fan.
That being said I still wouldn't back us, I'll try and stick with the belief that we will get dragged back into the mire just incase it does happen, but in reality there is a secret optimism growing that we are shaping ourselves into a proper premier league team.

Current odds with Betfair for Burnley to stay up are 1/50!
Safe to say they don't expect us to get relegated.

"CHAMPIONS AND YOU'RE GOING DOWN!!"
It was a good song to sing and get to the Leicester fans but it also must have had a huge impact and a massive boost of confidence for our players hearing that. I think it makes it even better having Barton back as he waa a huge part of getting to the prem and is now a huge part of us staying here. Don't think a different player would appreciate that song as much.

Looking very promising for the moment.
Month of March sees us play many away games if I'm not mistaken, we need to take at least some points from them to be absolutely sure

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Given Leicester could go down (and I think will) it proves nobody is too good to go down (nor to win the league). The margins are fine and are often confidence related and a few other intangible variables like Vardy not conning as many refs this time.
So I won't get complacent but we have to aim for top 10 which would mean a Robbie Brady difference in prize money even after tax and probable bonuses are allowed for.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Confidence is a massive thing, I think the players really believe in themselves and the performances are starting to come, since before xmas anyway. With that belief I find it almost impossible to think that we won't get at least 2 if not 3 wins away.
That said, until it is a mathematical certainty I'll hang on to the bubbly.

This, if it wasn't for the run of away games against those below us and some tough home games I would say no chance, but easy to go on a poor run in this league. I think we've got to many points on the board, but I will feel a lot most comfortable once we've won away.boatshed bill wrote:Candidates?

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Relegation Candidates is too strong but as I said on another thread....
There is the Leicester precedent.
I think we would be unlucky to get dragged into it now but its far from beyond the realms of possibility.
For what its worth I fancy Hull, Middlesbro and AN NOTHER to fall through the trap come May and only when its impossible will I think its definitely not us

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
I would be absolutely amazed if we went down from this position. We are too good, SD is too good and we have strengthened very well yesterday.
Look back to how effective we were last season home and away, look how incredibly effective we have been at home this season. Look at the 10 point gap between us and 18th place.
We will continue to do well at home, probably winning 3 from 6 will see us safe, but I'm confident that we'll now start to pick up away points, enabling us to stay up comfortably.
Stay Up The Clarets!

I'd actually be disappointed with a 17th place finish. If we finish top 10 it will be as big an achievement as Leicester last year.
We may also win the FA Cup if we continue to get home games.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
No chickens being counted here. We still need 11 points plus, and any point in the premier league is hard won. I'd still be over the moon at 17th, I'd snap your hand off. Im hopeful we'll do better of course, but there's not a single game where you can count on a point.
What a progression staying up would be.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
My view is that we are too far ahead of Sunderland, Defoe will only win them a few games and they missed Ulloa which was crucial.
Hull are improving but 13 points given the goal difference, i can't see it happening.
There's one spot to avoid, Palace will prove good enough as will Swansea, Boro do not have a goal threat but they are good defensively, they will be a 50/50 shout for the drop.
I still think Watford are no great shakes and Eddie's mob are poor at the back particularly after missing out on Ake.
Not home and hosed but we are within touching distance, can't relax yet but can you see an implosion from a Sean Dyche side ?
Not impossible but highly unlikely if our key players stay fit for most of the remainder of the season.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
I don't think we will be anywhere near relegation come the end of the season.
There are quite a few teams struggling this season for one reason and another.
Along with the current bottom 4 you can add Middlesbrough who's manager is losing the plot, Leicester who are sadly in free fall and west ham which I thought were crap.
We will be safe.

I just checked. In the season Blackpool went down with 39, West Ham were bottom having played 23 matches and they had 20 points.
Currently, Leicester in 15th only have 21 points!

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
We certainly can't be thought of as relegation candidates
at this moment in time and hopefully never.
But we could still have a very poor run (especially if we get a few injuries to key players)
that could drain our confidence and so could still find ourselves too close for comfort by the time we reach 30 games.
Much depends on the next few games in particular those away games at Watford, Hull, Swansea and Sunderland.
But we do have a bunch of players who give their all and if they can maintain their form and determination
then we should manage to get that elusive away win and hopefully start picking up a few away points.
That will be key to us staying up and not getting into trouble.
Ideally a win at Watford and say a draw at Hull (or vice versa) in our next two away games
and we're virtually there.
I just hope Barton doesn't get a lengthy ban because I think, if available, he will play a
a major part in our chance of staying up and/or not collapsing.
And who knows finishing in a decent position that gets us another 10m+ or more in prize money.
Now that would be something to cheer about.
And Dyche to get the freedom of Burnley plus manager of the year plus a new 3 year deal on mega bucks.
And have another 30-40m to spend on improving the team which will include 2 young Brazilian
players who will become legends.
Not a lot to dream of, is it?

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Think that once we win away, everyone will breathe a huge sigh of relief. However We still have to play all the bottom 5 away. Lose all those and we could be in trouble
Let's look at the facts.
Burnley - general form good, winning the tight games. 3 good signings to add to the mix. Away performances improving. Continue playing well and I think we will finish above:
Boro - draw too many for me. Remind me of us 2 years ago. Signings in Jan poor
Sunderland - play the occasional good game against the big boys, defence terrible, signings terrible.
Hull - Surely they can't catch us, however I'd not count them out of staying up, can they gel?
Palace - Think Sam will turn it round unfortunately
Swansea - looking a lot better under Clement, got firepower
Bournemouth - conceding an alarming amount of goals, they need to be careful
Leicester- out of form, no harmony in the camp. Looked poor last night. I'd be worried if I was them.
Think West Ham, Southampton and Watford will finish above us, so my prediction would be 13th if all goes well.

Re: Anyone still think we are relegation candidates?
Agree with virtually all of that Ric_c especially the first win away.
I just hope that we can do it at Watford and not suddenly turn in a crap performance and
get well beat. My nerves are close to shot already but must admit the win last night did go some way
to relieving them.
But unfortunately they'll not go away until we do get that first away win so come on lads
do it on Saturday.
Please.

I thought before a ball was kicked this season that we'd stay up.
I know that Sean and the players aren't looking down (or so they tell us) but as a fan I still am looking down. Only when we are mathematically safe will I start looking upwards.
Come on Burnley!
