Not just Defoe, a lot of the Sunderland players went today.

You'd be a bit cold not to feel something because of that picture though.

You can't help but feel for this poor boy and his family, and all those who go through these dredful times. Took some time to look at his story on fb and in other media, it really makes you feel for all who go through this. Sunderland and Everton have been amazing.

Terrible story. It can't have been easy at all for Jermaine Defoe to spend a day with the poor lad and hide his own emotions.

I've been following young Bradley's story since he was the mascot at Sunderland's game v Everton around October and November. It's been incredible to see the support he received from Sunderland and Everton, he was even their mascot recently. At a recent West Brom v Sunderland game they invited him but he was in hospital and unable to go so they had a collection for him.

Jermain Defoe is his favourite player and he went to the hospital yesterday with Vito Mannone, John O'Shea and Seb Larsson.

Sunderland put out this short video after his visit to the SSOL when he scored the December goal of the month v Chelsea.

I was thinking of posting that photo. What a fantastic thing! He may well have been told to go (to counter the nonsense with the PA last year...who knows!?) but seems to be genuine in his intentions and has made a poorly boy happy beyond belief. Danny Ings and his foundation is incredible humanity and empathy towards other human beings. This is also lovely to see! Well done, Defoe!!!!

I very much doubt that's the case - those Sunderland players have been absolutely brilliant with him of their own choosing.

Great to see football doing the right thing.
The contrast, a few years ago I watched the BRFC players arrive for their annual Christmas ward visits at the Royal Blackburn Hospital. They turned up in their cars, did they park in the car park? No, they parked at the drop off area and at the bus stops, literally every bus stop had a row of cars parked up.

Young Bradley has had some bad news today. Although the treatment he's been receiving has reduced the tumour slightly, they have found another tumour growing at the base of his back.

Wonderful gesture by Joe Hart too to allow Defoe to lead the team out with Bradley, even though the noise was a bit too much for him.

Jermain Defoe is not the only Sunderland player to be such a support for Bradley and his family, he's just the lad's favourite player. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone is another who I'm told has been brilliant with him.

Not good news for young Bradley I'm afraid - his mum posted this today. Those last eight words are awful to read.

Bradley is not good he has been in horrendous pain with his leg since yesterday to the point he couldn't move in bed last night. We have had him to the hospital today and they have give him a x Ray but it didn't show anything. The doctors gut feeling is that it is his cancer progressing but we need to wait and watch for a few days to see what happens.
Bradley was due to be mascot at the Riverside tonight but he is not well enough to go so we have had to cancel it.
I am hoping and praying that it is nothing serious and he starts to improve as I'm not ready for this to happen yet.

I think we all knew where it was heading, there didn't seem much hope, but when you see him and he's so energetic you get that hope there will be some good news. No child and parents should have to go through what they are going through right now. It really is heart wrenching.

Friend of mine died a couple of years ago after a sudden heart attack, but he used to spend at least three nights a week round at the children's cancer facility at Duke University hospital visiting the poorly kids. Our cycling club raises about $100k In his name every year.

One of my heroes was Bob

If one good thing has come out of this. It's been the way the 'football family' has come together. Rivalries don't exist, there are no boundaries.
Football gets a lot of bad press but at times like this everyone pulls together.
Hope the little fella gets better.

And just look at this below - a big game between two close rivals last night and the opposition club printed this in their match programme having already invited Bradley to be mascot. Well done Middlesbrough.

Re: young Bradley and Defoe

Bradley's mum has written this today.

2 years ago today my little hero was going down to theatre to get his central lines out so he could continue a normal childhood. At this point we never thought he would need another line, we were thinking positive our nightmare was over and the future was looking good.

2 years on he is going back down to theatre to get his line removed and a port put in but for a very different reason. This time it is so we can make as many memories as possible without being restricted in what he can do. This is heart breaking for us and something that we never thought we would have to deal with. I question why us? Why Brad? Why an innocent child every single day, life is cruel and unfair. However we are so grateful we get a chance to make the memories as we have met so many parents on our journey that didn't get the chance. We are going through a really hard time but there are other people that are going through a harder time. So if you can take anything from this status please be thankful for what you have got and never be jealous of what you haven't.

I know how I feel simply being an onlooker. What the depth of emotion must be to be actually living it is both unfathomable and unpalatable at the same time.

And yet, children are dying in their thousands across the world for many reasons, daily. So the only tangible I can grasp is that the level of publicity engendered in this case can only add to movement to cure such disease so that parents, like Bradley's, never have to be faced with it at some point in the future.

Absolutely horrendous for them.

This is the latest update:

Bradley has been experiencing a lot of pain over the past few weeks with his legs. Originally we thought it might of been off him doing to much playing. However he went down for an emergency MRI today and it has been confirmed that his cancer has progressed a lot and this is what is causing the pain.
The consultant is trying to organise radio therapy on the site to allow us to get to America but we will know more tomorrow.
This is not good news for us and things are moving to fast

It really is so unfair. A young boy with so much to live for who sadly will never have that chance.

It's fantastic to see everyone coming together to make the time that has as memorable and enjoyable as possible but bloody hell, no child should ever have to go though this.

I hope that enough time and remaining health can be held onto at the very least, long enough for him to have the trip of his dreams to America.

Sunderland are donating all the proceeds from the sale of the match programme (see post 39) to Bradley's fund.

And that link directly above is not very accurate. The trip to America is for Bradley to go to Florida for a holiday, not for treatment. They are hopeful he'll be well enough to go.
