What Junior Football team did you play for ?

Post by SloughClarets » Sat Feb 25, 2017 10:40 am

Following on from the laergely succesful topic of "What School did you go to? from halfmanhalfbiscuit. Which has created a bit of a Friends re-united relaunch.

Thought i would give this a go. I lost touch with all my old team mates, so would be good to know if they are still regular followers

So I'll start it off with

Colne Boys (Around late 80s early 90s era)

Nelson Stanley. Great days !!!!.
Ringstone Cresant what "fantastic" pitches they were. Ankle deep in mud from November to the end of April then suddenly dried up and became like concrete !!!!

Cambridge Street Colts, we went two seasons without winning but eventually beat someone 3-1 away!

I later joined Oswaldtwistle Immanuel and we won the cup. The medal is at my folks house, next to my Butlins under 14's table tennis runner up medal as well.

I'm clearly qualified to slag off today's professional athletes.

Belvedere. Ken Inkle the Chairmen, but think they've folded now.

Michelin (sp?) were one of, if not the best teams around when I was a lad.

Brierfield Celtic U11s and Pendle District U11s before moving away. I was often compared to Alan Hansen, exclusively by me.

I remember games against both Brierfield and Barrowford Celtic, always tough opposition. There was another team, something like Michelin who were also mostly Blackburn supporters. So that was always fiesty.

Borrowdale United then free transferred to Brierfield Celtic. Had a few decent seasons under the guidance of 'the professor' Dave Johnson that guy was a genius.

No junior football in leagues when I was a kid. However a couple of lads at Burnley Grammar, Pete Holden and Podge Smith, started up White Star and advertised in Tiger comic for teams to play in Sunday friendlies. So I played for them.

Another for Nelson Stanley around 1974 time. My younger brother, who unfortunately succumbed to the big C this week, also played in the same team as goalkeeper. Remember tough feisty games against Colne Sacred Heart as there were a good smattering of St Ted's lads in both teams.

Yes Stanley of "Nelson Stanley" was a legend. I was there as well around 73/74. We played in the Craven Jnr league. I remember Sacred Heart and Earby were our nearest rivals but I don't think we lost a game whilst I was there.
I remember Stan recruited almost exclusively from Pendle and Burnley town teams !!!!

So, in reply, who are ya?

Big question is, did you play in the 3-1? I remember a lad known as Tatty scored the third and we drank Pomaine from his boot.

My brother has just rung me and I told him about this thread. He says there was a goalkeeper called Steph. My brother was a St Ted's lad and remembers the Craven League playing against the farmers at Settle . Always a fight. He struggled to remember names but guesses at Durkin, Geoghan, Haggerty, Mayor , McFaddyan. My brother is called Mick.

Does any of this mean anything to Olias and Hapton.

He remembers a great night at the Swiss corner

Tod Colts.

Was good practice for me as a keeper, because we were shite.

Made the Halifax League cup final once though, but lost 3-1 to Bradford Park Avenue.

Highfield - played in the West Craven league for a couple of seasons. I believe Andy Payton played for them when he was a kid? Had loads of tours all over the place and was a good experience.

Also played at Junior Clarets and Burnley Belvedere.

Ken Gregory put a team in the Accrington + District Boys League from Haslingden. We were called Haslingden Olympic and finally prevented St James's(I think) continuing their dominance of the league. They were managed by Jim Ratcliffe a 'tackler' by trade at Waterside Mill, Haslingden. They did have a good side though. Just a few of the names I remember, Bob Ratcliffe in goal, signed for Chelsea and Blackpool and better known for his cricket career at Accrington and Lancashire. Jimmy Harrower Jnr, son of the Accy Stanley wing-half. A stocky half-back Ronnie (surname escapes me), flying winger Mickey Rooney and striker Marshall Pickup. First season we were runners-up in League and Cup and second season we did the double. Those were the days when you could play for your school and a boys league team. Played the majority of games in the first season when not a regular for the school team, when I was 'under-age', and fewer in the second season when school took precedence (sp).
Some of the Olympic lads, Peter Hart, centre half, Peter Nuttall, midfield, Ken (Higson) (not)??, think Keith Walkden played a couple of times, Ian Warburton, centre forward and for the rest of them, well my memory fails me so apologies if you were one of my teammates back in the day and I haven't given you a mention. Alan Curtis possibly. Judd Howarth maybe or perhaps that was just junior school. Ken would also take us to a few games at Maine Road to watch his team. I'd go if Burnley were away. The Franny Lee days so it was enjoyable enough. Good days and when we weren't in organised games we were down the tip where we had made our own pitch, where all the kids from close by would come and play, one or two who got attached to league clubs or played league cricket. Jimmy Snowden, Higgins brothers, Bobby Grimshaw, (Ian Wood??) Happy days.

Ramsbottom Crusaders. Played in the Ramsbottom Youth league. But included teams from Crawshawbooth and Stacksteads. Only ever won one medal, finishing runners up in 1972 I think, could've been 74. Only scored two goals, I did always play full back.

Alright Geoff lad.Great days playing for the colts under Russ the cuss.

Yeah cracking memories, still abroad, I'm living in East Ukraine a few hundred miles from the Russian border.

Do you still get on the Turf? 7 wins and 1 draw from 8 was great going. I suppose something had to give eventually so we ended up dropping two points against Chelsea. ;)

Did you go to the Lincoln game?

Was good practice for me as a keeper, because we were shite.

Made the Halifax League cup final once though, but lost 3-1 to Bradford Park Avenue.
