Biggest mugs in football

Post by bfcjg » Sat Feb 25, 2017 8:19 pm

Just reading the Derby thread and Shackells name was mentioned. He left us for Prem football.
But for me the biggest mug I can think of is Shearer.
He left Southampton and joined bstards because they offered a few hundred quid a week more than Man U. What has he got to show for it, a single medal for a bought trophy that is recognised by everyone in football apart from the banjo players as a freak event caused by money plus damaged knees by playing on deadwoods controversial pitch that aided the purchase of the title.
If he had opted for Man U his medal haul would have been massive. So for me he is the biggest mug I can think of.

Shearer- highest scorer in The Prem's (albeit shortish) history (Rooney needs 33% more goals than he currently has to catch Shearer). Now got a nice easy job with good pay & perks in the media. That mug?

I've never liked the guy and think he talks absolute crap, but it's money over trophies.

That has been the case with 99.9% of footballers for many years now.

He also lives in his chosen area of the country and played for the team he supported.I'm sure that he's really gutted.

He can still claim to be one of the best - if not the best - striker in PL history.

But he could still live in the North East with lots of medals and when he talks on MOTD about what it takes to keep being successful he would be speaking with some authority.

For pure strike rate, he is the best. That's despite 2 crutiate ligament injuries.

We are all cursed to live life forwards and review it backwards. When Shearer went to Newcastle, they looked poised to sweep all before them. It didn't happen, but he wasn't to know that. He still scored loads of goals for his Hometown Club, and won a bagful of caps for his Country. Not bad going.

Having said all that, I think he's a god awful pundit. Truly uninspiring with seemingly no interesting insights to give about games.

Leaving Rovers he had the chance of, what turned out, of being a hero for his local club or winning a shed load of trophies with United.
I'm sure he sleeps pretty soundly at night.

I do wonder how many more trophies United would have won if he'd have gone there though.

Another contender has to be Owen Judas Coyle. Had he stayed at Burnley and left on better terms he would not have the Claret curse on him. He may well have become a better manager and have the respect of his peers.

Shearer couldn't go to Man utd.

Jack Walker refused point blank to allow the transfer at any price.

Shearer will never admit it but turning man utd down will be a massive regret

Fair enough he won one title with Rovers in the then day chelsea buy the league style who never could keep up the expectation after.

Fair pal to Sir Alex and his lads to show Shearer the **** what he missed out on.

Hold on, Utd didn't want Shearer until he was up for sale at Blackburn.

I've never heard of them wanting him before he went to Rovers.

I respect his choice to join Newcastle though and I don't think I've ever seen a hint of him regretting it and in modern football with its mercenaries, he deserves some credit for that move.

People talk about Ferguson at utd as if he didn't outspend everyone..

Liverpool dominated without having to do that.

Throughout his reign, from start to finish, he spent more than any other club in the country.

Don't get me wrong, its still a talent to keep producing successfully utd sides, but it doesnt change the fact.

Just Google Shearer to Man U and you'll see they tried to sign him.
However the thread is about biggest mugs in football.
What about Fat Sam best job in England and the fat lump blew it because of greed now in a relegation battle in a club way below his own belief that he is a champions league winning manager.

Countless times on threads people question about loyalty in football. Shearer choose to playbfor his boyhood club over Utd. Put it this way. If I won a title at say Hull and Burnley and Utd wanted me there's no doubt Id pick Burnley. If I was as good as Messi id only want to play for Burnley. Shearer scoring at a packed out St James Park would have meant more to him than how many titles he could have won.

Eh? So you say he should have gone to utd to win more medals instead of Newcastle but shouldn't have left Southampton for blackburn where he won his only premuer league medal. OK

Ferguson has said Shearer is the only player who turned him down twice.
From Saints and from Fiddlers. He said he never went back for a player after they'd rejected him except for Shearer.

As much as despised Shearer at the time, there is no denying that he was the best player in the world in his prime.

Are we now pretending he didn't win a PL title? I wish he didn't (for obvious reasons) but he did. A PL great who scored countless goals for his boyhood club and has gone down as a legend in Newcastle. I would personally chose legend status with my hometown team (and better money) over winning trophies that take up space in the house and get left in a box when you die. Add in the goal scoring records, that will remain even if he passes. On him personally, I quite like him.

Dalglish promised him great European nights against Trelleborgs. Fergie couldn't compete with that
