Here's my Eleven, chosen not necessarily for shortage of talent, but also dis-interest and lack of commitment to the Claret cause...
1. Mark Kendall
2. Peter Leebrook
3. Darren Heesom
4. Steve Blatherwick
5. Jim Heggarty
6. Mark Ford
7. Phil Malley
8. Peter Mumby
9. Tony Hancock
10. Nick Pickering
11. Paul Stewart
I was just about to type " That lot would take some beating ! ", but based on their collective showings for us, they really wouldn't !!

Re: Worst ever Burnley 11 ?
mark Caughey was the worst player ever to don a Burnley shirt.Remember watching him play in a game away at Stockport, might have been his debut.Unfit, slow, overweight and they were his more positive attributes.
Re: Worst ever Burnley 11 ?
Just reminiscing and I've seen some absolute dross play for us,but to be honest had some of my best away days watching em.
This current generation of Claret fans will never hopefully have to witness those type of players again.

I see Mark Kendall gets a mention. If we are going to base a goalkeeper on one performance, as it is with Kendall, then surely Tony Woodworth gets in. Always Joe Neenan for me as the worst regular goalkeeper I saw.

Like I say, statistically anyone who played in that season deserves to be in the worst eleven - collectively they dragged us to 91st place in the league pyramid.

Nick Pickering has to be in there - he told me to f-off at the old Huddersfield ground - Leeds Road. We got beat 2-0 and the away fans were very close to the goals so I kindly pointed out to him my considered opinion on his performance. I wish he would have shown that kind of aggression on the pitch !!
That side in the 4th division when we almost went down was pretty awful...no disrespect to Peter Leebrook but I think they may have mistakingly giving him a first team shirt when he was delivering the pies. Phil Malley was not much better.
Joe Gallagher was definitely injured when we bought him - proof that the management team at the time were bent. In equine parlours they would describe him as lame. I was working behind the bar in the Sparrow Hawk in Burnley and he was stopping in the hotel when he first signed and I remember him having a permanent limp but then still playing for us.
Dane Richards was one of the most surreal 30 minutes in my experience of watching Burnley - he was so far out of his depth that night that its really hard to judge how bad he was. Fortunately for Dane he is back now filming in Hollywood in the remake of Different Strokes.
For the person who mentioned Mark Monnington he actually looked a half decent centre back for half a season - looked to have something about him and then he lost his confidence. I remember watching us away at Doncaster - Bell Vue. There was no stand down one side of the pitch - not sure why. Monnington sliced a clearance and it went right over the houses....probably still rolling down the A1. It was at that point that I realised we did not have the next Bobby Moore on our books !

I always got the impression before and after CT that Neenan couldn't have cared less whether we went out of the league or not. I've been told since he was a decent bloke though and good/ generous with the trainee lads at the time , although he dined out on being good mates with Beefy Botham quite a bit.ClaretTony wrote:I see Mark Kendall gets a mention. Amadou Sanokho is probably the worst I have ever seen play for us.
The lad made three or four sub appearances and literally looked like one of the crowd had just jogged on to the pitch, his touch was unbelievable.

And I remember reading 442 a while after the Hudds game when fanzine editors were picking the worst player in each club. Ours said something along the lines of: 'Ex England Midfielder Nick Pickering was so slow at Huddersfield we thought he was cutting the grass!'

I've seen some absolute dross but nothing comes remotely close to Michael Williams in the mid 90's.
When that incompetent Waddle signed him he proffered 'I can't believe we've signed Michael Williams'.
The only thing he got right whilst he managed us, he seriously had to be seen to believed, there wasn't even criticism, just laughter.

I always remember chatting to a bloke on the terraces at this game who was stood with his motorbike helmet in his hand in full leathers and this cockney policeman said, "sorry to interrupt lads but can I just ask how long it took you to get down here on your bike mate, the other officers have been taking bets?", the lad replied "About ten minutes, I live in Stratford" The guy couldn't comprehend that, even in the late 80's, Burnley had a large southern based following.

I am not going to pick players. It's not there fault that the standard we played at just wasn't good over many years. I will though contribute by saying that whatever team is picked John Bond can be the manager.

As for the worst players I've seen then it's Ian Bray, Paul France and Jon Smyth.
Does anyone remember when we loaned David Williams our reserve goalkeeper to Rochdale. Then for some random reason allowed him to play against us at Turf Moor in which he was Man of the Match and they won 0-1!!!

Of the Four that Ternent sacked, Blatherwick was probably hardest done by as he actually went on to have a decent career in the lower leagues, captaining Chesterfield for a number of years.

I was on that game, 21st September 1991, I couldn't believe it when William's name was announced...he played like Gordon Banks. Frank Casper was near the end of his tether, and we lost 3 - 1 away at Scarborough the following week & that was Frank done. Jimmy Mullen takes over, wins 9 League games on the trot, gets the Gig on a permanent basis and two promotions in three seasons follow...Liverpool Clarets wrote: Does anyone remember when we loaned David Williams our reserve goalkeeper to Rochdale. One observation, Mike Conroy scored 26 goals in 45 League and Cup appearances that season, all as a starter. Fair play to him, but I watched every home and many away games that season, and someone like Andy Payton would have probably netted 40+, with the chances created.. this is not untypical of home games that season, & we won 4 - 1...
