Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
They are six points behind Sheff Wednesday in 6th spot.
Would it have any effect on our player recruitment in the summer if they came up?
As they are a similar sized club I presume they would be looking at similar players to us, especially depending on how much Trevor Hemmings allows them to spend, unless they decide to take the money and run.

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
No matter who comes up, we will still be viewed in the same way we are now and be looking at similar types of players to those already signed.
We won't have any advantage over those teams coming up unless we manage to maintain a top flight presence for several seasons I would expect.

Our wage bill will creep up every year we stay in the premier league so we should be well ahead of everyone who comes up apart from Newcastle.

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
It shouldn't do, because our transfer targets should be the next tier up from theirs.
Also they'll be viewed as instant relegation candidates because it would be their first time in the PL and they won't be prepared for it in the slightest.
Look at Boro, who spent a decent amount of money and are struggling.

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
Strange question, isn't that the same for any side who comes up? they'll be targeting from the same pool/calibre player as us, I don't see what difference it makes wether it's PNE, Brighton or Huddersfield.

Why is it? For example, if we are still interested in Dale Stephens and he wants to move back up to the north west he might just as well see PNE as a good choice, thus we are competing with them for similar type signings.

If the club can't present themselves as a more attractive proposition then Preston, then they might as well give up now.Spijed wrote:Why is it? I'd hope that a team going into its 4th season in the PL (albeit spreadout) would be targeting slightly better players than a complete newbie to this league.

if Preston got up (and we are talking about the real, original "bottle jobs", not these johnny come latelys like Derby), then they would be like us under Coyle, a lot of learning to do and not a lot of cash to do it in.

No - as in targeting better players than PNE will want to spend their money on. They shouldn't be able to match our better wages / initial cost for players in their 1 season up.Spijed wrote:You mean like Jeff Hendrick?

Even though that should be true, we only paid £3 million for James Tarkowski who wanted a move back up north. Depending on his wages that sort of figure might be within their budget as well.
Didn't we pay only slightly less for Andre Bikey?

One thing for sure you would get to see half the Republic of Ireland side in one game , that alone would be worth it .

It would affect us 100%, there would only be two relegation places up for grabs with PNE nailed on to finish rock bottom

They're nowhere near us financially. They'll never sign a 13 million pound player in a million years.

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
Theoretically it could do.
Most players now dont care who they play for more what league it is. See benteke. He didnt even know who he signed for.
Falcao has had little to no say in any of the clubs he played for. Tevez was similar.
Preston could guarantee a play first team football and similar wages to us but we may not guarantee him a start. Say it was Stephens. We would have Hendrick, Defour, Westwood, Barton and maybe ONeill and Marney. Thats six players to compete with. If Preston could offer similar terms they would be a direct competitor. He would be on the same money. Would live in the same area. But have more chance of playing.
Saying that its the likes of Leeds, Wednesday and Newcastle that would be of more concern. Bigger clubs. Wealthier owners. Trendy cities. Big crowds. Even Brighton would be more appealing on many players eyes. They dont care that Brighton have no history and a crap mechano stadium. They have a new ground, nice facilities, good location.
For that reason I hope Huddersfield win the league and the play offs get cancelled!

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
Just to put in context - Preston's transfer record remains the £1m they spent on David Healy in 2000.
They have matched this two or three times since, but just think about that. They would be so unprepared for the wage demands and transfer fees associated with this league.

There's the next cause to support, getting rid of football playoffs. I know that it's a cash cow for the owners, but real fans will ultimately know that they are being taken to the cleaners.
Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
No, the playoffs have been kind to us. Besides, they increase the number of meaningful games and provide drama. Go playoffs!

Actually, they decrease the number of meaningful games, because the very top clubs go into a shell once they're secured at least a play-off spot. With an absolute cut-off you would see more clubs "going for it", and more wide-open football.

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
Completely disagree, even supporters of teams in mid-table maintain aspirations of a play off place in late season.
All fans need hope and a dream, look at PNE, no chance of a top 3 but the club is buzzing as they are on form and promotion albeit unlikely is still a possibility, great news for the fans.
The play offs were the greatest invention in the history of the world just behind 'delete history' on internet search engines.

Re: Would PNE going up have any effect on us?
Every year 16 teams enter the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, from a field of 30. It basically makes the regular season irrelevant. But people still go to the games because it's night out, or they're on some kind of expense account. This entitles them to snooze through a typical NHL game. Personally, I don't get it, but to each their own.

Yes but no more than any other similar sized club really. I'd prefer them to Newcastle or Brighton.
