Louise Mensch has become a journo too, and not a terrible one either.

I dare say that editing the Evening Standard and being a constituency MP is less onerous than being Chancellor and a constituency MP, however, it doesn't sit right with me. Surely there's a conflict of interest?

Well she was a best-selling author before she became an MP.

I don't believe that this has anything to do with money at all. He definitely doesn't need it.

Illustrates the corruptness of British politics, a carpetbagger devoid of any principles or morals who will do anything to earn a fast personal buck. This guy inflicted 7 years of unnecessary austerity on the British public but, at the end of the day, I'm alright Jack.

Do you really believe this? It may be true of course, but he really doesn't need another income. and my feeling is that this is far,far more to do with the personal animosity between him and May, and the fact that he can now attack her everyday in pro-EU London over Brexit and other issues.

Agree, nil_d.

Someone on BBC tonight described GO as a "social liberal" - which has got to explain some of "unconventional" budget ideas.

Everyone assumes that ES role is way of continuing his political ambitions. I'd expect ES editorial to be "left of centre" - but, we will wait and see if it is "any good."

I liked GO's Northern Powerhouse idea. I also wish Andy Burnham success as Mayor of Manchester. The country needs two or three "global scale" cities to equal London (I don't say "compete" because I don't think this should be a competition - much more sharing and growing together - and competing with the other major cities around the world).

I'm all for MPs that have jobs outside Parliament. We need our MPs to be connected with the "outside" world - and to have "real" jobs just like the rest of us do.

I've no problem GO getting paid a lot: the UK taxpayer would collect approx. £400k if GO is paid £650k as an employee of Blackrock. We'd take a similar percentage of whatever he will earn at ES. (My figures include employer's NICs at 13.8%, 45% income tax and 2% employee's NICs).

Let me get this straight...

His constituency is in Cheshire?
He's the editor of an evening release London newspaper.
He's on the books of some place in the US.
He also works for a bank one day a week and chats to businesses....

Where does he find the time to be an MP and see his constituents?

I did read somewhere his seat isn't going to be there's after the next election, it's being merged with another one.

HMRC won't collect much from him, he will find a way to dodge it.

Hi Sidney, I do say, if he's paid as an employee...

But, GO is pretty high profile and there's a lot that the Treasury is trying to do to collect taxes where they are due. Aggressive tax approach to his ES role is likely to be looked at very carefully by HMRC. The same could be true for Blackrock (is this the US place - they also have London office).

I'd guess it is end of GO political ambitions and his credibility if he tries anything "clever" with his taxes. And, he will have enough opponents already, never mind the new ones he might make with ES, he would ensure that his tax is 100% beyond criticism.
