Heaton 8 kept us in the game, got us a point. MOM
Lowton 6 told to hold back last 30
Keane 8 solid
Mee 8 warrior
Ward 8 great game
Barton 6 average
Hendrick 6 average
Boyd 5 offered zero at both ends. The least creative winger I've ever watched
Arfield 6
Gray 7 worked hard, needs a midfield able to cross/pass the ball to his runs.
Barnes 6 what a miss

Heaton 8 Great saves kept us in it

Lowton 6 awful crosses, we need a right winger buying to deliver even if we go down which seems unlikely

Keane 7 Was ok

Mee 8

Ward 8 Got some good crosses in which we should have scored from

Boyd 5 Needs replacing with a proper right winger

Hendrick 6

Barton 6

Arfield 6 Brady should be playing and getting used to our system but I thought Arfield did ok today, more defensively than going forward

Barnes 6 Should have scored was unlucky

Gray 5 Worst first touch I have ever seen on a televised match, was at least 3 times he tried to control the ball and kicked the ball straight out of play. Lost it more often than not even when a ball was played to his feet.

Amazed he has got mom above, I must have been watching a different game.

Vokes 6 Decent shot on goal

Brady 6

Incredibly frustrating to watch today as we look tactically inept away from home, might not bother watching away matches after this.

Feel like I've found a quid but lost a fiver. That was awful, against a dire side.

Heaton - 8 - made two excellent saves, which absurdly were crucial to us getting a point.

Lowton - 6 - ok defensively, probably provided the best service into Gray, but generally poor in the final third.

Ward -6 - ok defensively, and one good first half cross but otherwise very disappointing in attack.

Keane - 6 - ok defensively but, guess what, his use of the ball was poor.

Mee - 6 - as Keane, but even worse in possession.

Barton - 5 - picked up a rather unnecessary booking first half and appeared to lack snap after that. Used the ball as badly and ponderously as anyone.

Hendrick - 6 - a couple of driving runs which at least committed defenders, but no better in possession than anyone else.

Boyd - 4 - usual effort and saw a fair bit of it first half but did very little with it, and his second half performance was shocking.

Arfield - 7 - probably our most constructive player today, which is no accolade. Played Barnes in first half and generally looked as likely as anyone.

Barnes - 4 - hopeless. Missed what looked from the away end to be a sitter, and apart from that anonymous and unable to provide the refinement our attack desperately needed.

Gray - 6 - did his best with limited service but appeared to have switched off long before the game, presumably on the basis he'd concluded he'd not get a decent ball into him if the game went on until christmas.

Vokes - 6 - not great, but a vast improvement on Barnes.

Brady - 6 - more threatening than Boyd, largely by simply staying wide, but made a balls of two glorious crossing opportunities.

Well, its a point, but the performance and abject quality of the opposition makes it a deeply unsatisfying one. Sunderland are awful, but the simple device of sitting deep and narrow was enough to befuddle our ponderous and one dimensional attacking football. Only when Brady belatedly joined the fray did we have any real width other than the full backs, and Arfield apart, we rarely threatened to unpick Sunderland through the middle.

This season has been great and we will almost certainly survive, which will be a triumph. But we simply have to be better in these sorts of games - weve got to be braver, more confident and instinctive in our use of the ball, play with more width and imagination. Dyche has to think again about how he asks the team to play tactically, but the players have to replicate what they have done so well at home, too.

Really dominated for long spells, at times they struggled to get out of their half, but our use of the ball outside the area was woeful. Nothing wrong with the tactics or set up, but some players didn't do their job, again.
Shooting from distance was pathetic.
Opportunities to play the ball into the box early spawned.
Barnes and Gray made some great runs but the ball either doesn't come or is way short or heavy.
I'm struggling to understand how with all that ball, in all the right aread, Pickford had sod all to do.

Still a good point at the end of the day.

Interestingly Arfield's passing stats for today are outstanding at 92% (BBC's MOM). Hendrick's and Barton's are very good too at 84% and 81% respectively. The stats also unsurprisingly show that Boyd was barely on the ball and when he was he was wasteful. Ben Mee (Sky's MOM) had the best passing stats of the back four at a good 76%.

Of those players though, i'd be willing to bet the only one to pass the ball forwards with a decent success rate was Arfield - certainly within the Sunderland half. And he'd also be the only one to do so without pausing for about 15 seconds before passing it. Mee played teammates into trouble several times today. It will count as a successful pass, but I doubt he'll have been thanked for it.

I recognise stats can be misleading but I think they are worth considering as a supplement to people's individual player ratings. They certainly support you giving Arfield his highest rating so far.

As well as Sky's MOM, Ben Mee is currently at the top of the MOM table on here. I gave it Heaton.

The Barnes chance looked like a pass from Arfield to me, albeit from 100 yards away, but it certainly came from the most constructive piece of build up in the game by miles.

Heaton 9 - Made 2 very good saves and came off his line quickly to snuff out a Defoe run. I can't think of any mistakes at all.
Lowton 7 - Mostly good. A bit wasteful at times. Billy Jones header came at his back post, but he may not be at fault for that. +1 for CS.
Keane 8 - Thought he was outstanding. His pace and reading of the game saved us at times.
Docked a mark for clearing the ball straight to them near the end.
Mee 9 - His usual dependable self. Thought he was excellent. Solid block when they were all shouting for a penalty.
Ward 7 - Some good use of possession. Solid.
Barton 7 - Reads the game so well. A couple of delightful balls that showed his class. Not as forceful as he has been.
Perhaps the early card took the edge off him?
Hendrick 6 - Generally good. Can't criticise too much. Some nice touches and one lovely through ball.
Boyd 6 - Steady forward and backwards.
Arfield 6 - Again, steady. Set pieces weren't great. General play was good enough and he has a football brain.
Gray 6 - I thought he was good in the first half. Has a very heavy touch. So strong and needs to play off someone. Didn't work out today.
Barnes 6 - Usual handful. Missed a sitter as it unexpectedly fizzed across him.

Brady 6 - OK. Could be critical but a few times things started to happen around him eg. his cross straight at Pickford.
Vokes 6 - Had that chance near the end. Also had one sublime moment where he took a ball down beautifully.
Defour ? - Who knows! I trust SD's judgement in any case.

On other threads, people are whinging but I'm ok with the point. We had a couple of very good chances. They arguably had a couple just as good or better. All in all, we are edging our way towards safety.

I'll enjoy taking another point in the Premier League.

when you see it back tonight spice you'll change your mind, it's a miss hit shot. We created one good move all game and that wasn't it. A point is a point though

edit: Just seen it back again, it could well have been a pass if I'm being honest, Arfield does have a look before he receives the ball

so we created 2 chances in 94 mins against the worst team in the league instead if 1 !

Our approach to away games this season and our previous two seasons in the top flight is very odd compared to how we play at home. I get the impression we are still approaching away games with an inferiority complex and that we don't feel like we deserve or are capable of getting 3 points. This mindset needs to change urgently

Heaton 8 a few top quality saves and generally commanding.
Lowton 7 very solid against a tricky winger
Mee 8 MOM thought he showed the battle and grit we needed today
Keane 7 a notch below his best
Boyd 6 some solid covering but little else
Barton 6 quiet today
Hendrick 6 not creative enough
Arfield 7 our best midfielder and most likely outlet
Gray 8 thought his movement and contribution was very good today
Barnes 6 battled but not much else

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but Sunderland were absolute dogshit. We weren't as bad.

Think I know which MOTD slot we'll be in.

A very frustrating performance because Sunderland were there for the taking and we didn't take advantage. The way Dyche strode over at the end with the speed of Red Rum tells me that he came not to lose. That is probably the single biggest reason we haven't yet won away.

Fair do to him, it is working (ish) but this tentative creeping towards the finishing line is annoying because one senses that we could have won comfortably had we really tried to and got men forward quicker and took a few more risks. There was a moment in the first half when Lowton got the ball in a fast move and Boyd peeled back to receive it instead of peeling forward and trying to get in on goal. That one move summed us up.

Players epitomise their manager and this lot definately do, so Dyche needs praising for a stubborn rearguard (especially Mee today) but criticising for the lack of forward momentum. One bit of mitigation, I felt Sunderland copied us by sitting deep and narrow, a compliment and it killed the game as a spectacle. Apparently we had more shots than in any away game - it certainly didn't feel like it.

Let's just get this win or two so we can cut loose and enjoy the remainder.

Happy enough with a point.
After the first half, genuinely thought we'd go on and win.
Didn't pan out and Tom kept us in it.
Really do miss someone who can get decent balls in the box.

Heaton 8 MoM Kept us in it
Lowton 7 Steady away but caught out again with a deep cross covering for Keane and leaving his man with a free header
Keane 6 won enough headers but poor distribution and needs to watch his positioning from deep crosses
Mee 8 A rock as usual but as Keane distribution left a bit to be desired
Ward 8 Defended well and made some good runs and provided some good crosses that deserved a better finish
Boyd 3 Same usual inept Boyd who runs around alot but achieves nowt. Doesn`t stop crosses coming in and to slow and weak to create chances
Hendrick 5 Slow in possession and poor control but got round the pitch and didn`t try to hide
Barton 6 Caught out a few times but took a yellow for the team, if the player had got past he was away
Arfield 8 Good game for Scotty today, worked hard without the ball and tried to create things when he had it
Barnes 6 Took alot of stick today but not his best day at the office, would have picked him to have the chance he fluffed, funny old game !!
Gray 4 Embarrassed for him and his lack of ball control throughout, needs to seriously improve this if he is to progress at this level, England call up, do me a favour, he is a million miles from that yet IMO

Vokes 6 Won some good headers and nearly won it for us

Dyche 5 -1 for picking Boyd and -1 for not giving Defour a chance for at least a few minutes

Fans 10 non-stop for the whole 90 deserved a better performance from the team

Yep Sunderland are bottom of the league but i think a few fans are getting a bit carried away with how superior they think Burnley are to some of the bottom teams.
In 2017 Sunderland have drawn at home to Spurs and Liverpool.
As much as they have struggled their squad still cost a lot more than ours - we weren't the only team who brought on a £13m substitute today.

We dominated the first half today - and we should have gone in at least 2-0 up. The quality of our final ball was poor but then again what should we expect from 4 wide men who between them cost about £4m ?....2 of them free transfers.

We need to remember that we are still overachieving with this squad of players - personally I think that we go into most (if not all) games as underdogs.

Heaton : 7 - few good saves but would have been disappointed if he would have conceded any of these
Lowton : 6 - quality of crossing was poor
Ward : 7 - got forward much better than Lowton and thought he also played well defensively
Mee : 8 (MoM) - played well and kept Defoe and Borini quiet
Keane : 8 - ditto
Boyd : 6 - thought like rest of the team he had a good first half.....but like most faded badly in second
Barton : 6 - booking was taking one for team. Bit sloppy in second half.
Hendrick : 6 - again sloppy in second half and did not impose himself on the game like he can. Also 2 wild "Wembley" shots from distance when he should have played the ball out wide (but probably thought what's the point with our crossing today !)
Arfield : 6 - can't really see why he would get MoM. Frustrating to see us curling the ball away from goal from free kicks out wide - so much harder to score. Also not sure why he took that free kick on the edge of the box in the first half - should have been Barton. Has Arfield ever scored a free kick for Burnley ? Why then does he insist on taking the ball off other players ?
Barnes : 6 - usual handful for their defence but missed a real sitter
Gray : 7 - thought he ran the channels very well in the first half and caused their defence plenty of problems. Second half his first touch let him down but he really did have zero service for pretty much all of the game.

Brady : 5 - should have been on earlier (or from the start). Wasteful with his crossing again and also lost the ball a couple of times which led to them breaking. I think he will be a good player for us and that things are not coming off at the moment because he is trying too hard and getting frustrated with his own performances. I hope that we get safe asap and then he can relax a bit and show us his potential.
Vokes : 5 - did ok when he came on. Hit his shot well for the chance and thought that was a very good save.

International break and far too many of our players will be playing in meaningless friendlies and qualifiers for my liking. Let's hope we get no injuries and Brady gets some confidence back.

Heaton 8 Some very good saves MOM
Lowton 6 He's a very solid RB but his crossing is poor.
Keane 8 solid
Mee 8 Sir Benjamin will have a sore nose today for sure
Ward 8 He's developing into a very confident and capable left back.
Barton 7 Had lots of the ball and made things tick in the middle of the park but we did SFA with the ball going forwards.
Hendrick 7 His shooting was way off today.
Boyd 6 He's important to the framework of the team but offered little going forward.
Arfield 6 See Boyd
Gray 7 Worked hard but we're not supplying him with sufficient decent balls to exploit his pace and strength.
Barnes 6 Loses a point for not scoring at the end of the 1st half.

Vokes and Brady 6

Overall pleased with a point but they were there for the taking 1st half and had Barnes taken that chance we would have won comfortably IMHO.

Don't be embarrassed. His movement, his running the channels were excellent yesterday. My man of the match for that performance and fully worthy of the 8 out of 10 I gave him.

Heaton 8 - Solid
Lowton 6 - Pretty sure if I worked on my crossing for a week I'd become quite good. Why can't he.
Keane 8 - Excellent bar one hiccup
Mee 9 - So dependable
Ward 6
Boyd 4 - Sorry, I don't get it. Hendrick would do better out wide with Westwood in the middle.
Barton 6
Hendrick 6
Arfield 7 - Worked hard
Barnes 5 - Needs to start going for ball first and man/free kick second rather than the other way round
Gray 7 - Worked hard but didn't have much to feed on

When we're breaking forward away from home Boyd and Arfield seem to tuck in and just get on top of the strikers, while the full backs take an age to get up the wing (When they do so the crossing is invariably poor). The result is there's no out ball for Hendrick/Barton and the attack mostly breaks down / we give it back to Keane or Mee.
I would have liked to see us be a bit braver against an opposition as poor as that.

Heaton 9. Saved us from a certain defeat 2nd half
Lowton 5. All over the shop 2nd half
Ward 7. Our best defender
Mee 6. Poor 2nd half
Keane 6. Same as Mee
Boyd 5. Created nothing
Barton 5. Poor today
Hendrick 4. Poor
Arfield 4. Poor
Barnes 6. Should have scored, looked difficult sat in the heavens but looked easy on TV
Gray 7. Played well today as usual. marked him down thought he should have got on the end of Vokes shot and so did he

Vokes 7. Played well when he came on and won lots of flick ons
Brady 6. Did ok apart from one silly mistake were he gave the ball away. He looks to be settling in better now
and should get a start in front of Arfield

Boyd and Arfield important to the framework of the team? And for me there lies the problem. We have tried the same shape and line up time and time again. It brings us little or no reward away from home. We play with a midfield 4 who are all labourers. They work hard, do the basic tasks but none have the ability to create. We need an architect, someone who lets the labourers work but can create something. Our architects are either injured or contributing as much to a game as i do, sitting on our backsides watching the game.

Until we address this, the away wins column will remain at zero. And given how far into the season we are, i can't see it changing.

Vegas Claret wrote:when you see it back tonight spice you'll change your mind, it's a miss hit shot. We created one good move all game and that wasn't it. A point is a point though

edit: Just seen it back again, it could well have been a pass if I'm being honest, Arfield does have a look before he receives the ball

so we created 2 chances in 94 mins against the worst team in the league instead if 1 !
It is a definite pass from Arfield. He has a look first and had it been a shot, he'd have let the ball run across him (he had the time) rather than taking the ball out in front of him. It is actually a brilliant pass - for all of those who say Arfield isn't good enough, its the perfect riposte, wonderfully imaginative and perceptive and skillfully executed. He was neat and tidy all day (everything in the first half good came down our left, and he was why - constantly drawing men and keeping the ball moving simply but effectively) and then on top of that he produced the pass of the game.

.

I think this would have more force had we been unable to break teams down at home, but generally, this hasn't been the case. The difference away from home is that our full backs appear to be more reserved, and generally the team do not play with the positive intent and bravery that they do at home. We are tentative in our use of the ball, slow the game down too often and generally seem to do far more thinking than we do at home. Confidence must be a part of that, but I do wonder if it is also influenced by a lack of intensity, perhaps because the manager gives the players more cautious instructions (I'm speculating here, my only evidence is that I don't think the full backs don't advance as far or as early)). We also seem to settle for a point earlier away from home - we haven't pushed on at Swansea, Hull or yesterday like we have against Boro and Leicester for example.

Certainly though, I thought the change was Brady for Boyd miles earlier in the match (actually, I'd have started that way) because what we lacked yesterday above all was width. Home and away we struggle when teams defend deep and narrow against us and force us to take the initiative (the difference being that at home, we play with more tempo and simply throw more punches), and Brady was presumably signed to help us counter that by providing a wide outlet in the mould of Matty Taylor. His crossing when he came on yesterday was disappointing, but I always think most players struggle to make a real impact when they come on after 70-75 minutes. Had the chance to cross to Vokes at the near post come when he'd had 15 minutes to get into the match, rather than his first real involvement, there's every chance his end product would have been better.

That's perhaps part of the same point - everyone, manager and players, needs to be a bit braver and bolder away from home.

Heaton - 8 (a brilliant keeper)

Lowton - 7 (not his usual self)
Meane - 7 (as Lowton)
Mee - 9 MOM (bloody nose, what bloody nose?) Mr Burnley and the first name on the team sheet for me.
Ward - 7 (good first 25mins but then reverted to framework)

Boyd - 6
Hendrick - 6
Barton - 6
Arfield - 5

Gray - 6
Barnes - 6

Brady - 5
Vokes - 7 (on for long enough to give a rating?)

Good first 25mins, poor for the next 60, adreneline rush for 85-90 then uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......

p.s. watched on a perfectly good stream from 1000s of miles away. That should cancel my ratings according to a few troglodytes on here, living very much upto the dingle name of old. Some Burnley fans neither live in the area any more nor are able to attend games, no matter how much they would dearly love to. This is the 21st Century.

Gray did run the channels well but if you can`t control the ball when you get it then what is the point, at this level first touch is more important than at championship level and be honest Grays first touch on most occasions is dire.
