What to do in Liverpool for a few days/nights?
What to do in Liverpool for a few days/nights?
Me and my Missus are coming up North from the West Country for a few days on Sunday and will be going to the Stoke game. Even though I am really old :-0 I have never spent any time in Liverpool apart from footie matches and so we are planning to put that right by staying there for two nights and just looking for any advice/tips on what to do/see?
We are staying near the Albert Docks and will probably be there midday Sunday and leave to come over to Burnley after breakfast on the Tuesday so one and a half days really.
We are not exactly culture vultures but not exactly plebs either.
Nothing planned yet but Sunday night at the Cavern sounds good with a you guessed it a Beatles tribute band on though we are not overtly Beatles fans, its got to be done hasn’t it?
Whilst I am not a CAMRA fiend I like proper beer so any pub recommendations gratefully received. Thanks

If you're into your music, I believe the British Music Museum is worth a visit. http://www.britishmusicexperience.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: What to do in Liverpool for a few days/nights?
Over the last 15 years or so Liverpool has gone from being a bit of an ale desert to a absolutely flowing with the stuff - it now has 3 or 4 small breweries.
Having said that, Albert Dock isn't the best place to start, although the Baltic Fleet on the other side of the main road is worth a visit (brews its own).
Dale street has a few good ale houses - Rigby's (I'm a regular!) the Vernon, Excelsior and Ship & mitre all have good ale, and you could also detour to the Lion on Moorfields.
At the top end of town there's a few in the Hardman street area - philharmonic is a lovely old pub (grade 1 listed toilets!) also Fly in the Loaf is usually quite lively, and nearby the Dispensary on Renshaw street is another personal favourite. There's also the Roscoe Head nearby which is a quirky little boozer.
Non-alewise - There are loads of museums on The Albert Dock as well as the Tate gallery. I haven't been to the Music Museum yet (Cunard building on the Pier Head) but I have heard good reports.

...and I wouldn't mind betting that Claretdom has never been to Liverpool.

The maritime museum is near Albert Dock and is free and very good on the history of the city.
There is an offer on the open top bus tour on groupon at the moment.

I'm far from a frequent visitor to Liverpool but last time I was there for non-football reasons I visited the Baltic Fleet. Definitely worth a visit.

Excellent city and if you just walk around from the albert dock you will find loads to do. Liverpool one is decent shopping.
Beats Manchester all day long.

Great city, your wife will love it. All the shops in Liverpool 1 district and all close at hand.
The cavern is always busy with tourists so expect to stand.
Chinatown good for food but some only accept cash. Lots of boozers, food pubs, italian, irish, other food places, shows, the waterfront plus friendly people. City of Culture has been really good for Liverpool.

Since Wade Smiths closed apart from football you are right. Least you aren't touchy and defensive though.

Re: What to do in Liverpool for a few days/nights?
In addition to what has already been suggested:
Peter Kavanaghs on Egerton Street. Historic interior that is little changed on over 100 years. Good ale as well. Likely to be very quiet on a Sunday/Monday.
The Belvedere on Faulkner Street. Tiny pub that has good cider on draft as well as varieties of gin and tonics.
The Black Swan on Wood Street. Not everyone's cup of tea but if you are a rocker/metal enthusiast then it will be for you.
Black Lodge Brewery on Kitchen Street. Small warehouse type place. Hipsters aplenty but really good beer.
If you are after something not pub related then would recommend the Williamson Tunnel tours or the Tate gallery which is on Albert Dock.

Wade Smith closed coz all the scallies moved to Manchester, but let's not miss out on a chance to throw in a few more stereotypes.claretdom wrote:Since Wade Smiths closed apart from football you are right. Least you aren't touchy and defensive though.

Re: What to do in Liverpool for a few days/nights?
There's a couple of museums/galleries along the front which are worth a visit. The Tate is on the docks and one of those big new buildings next to the docks is also a museum I believe - I really can't recall whether I've actually been in.
There's also a really good museum further into town away from the docks which has a dinosaur skeleton hanging from the ceiling - this one I've definitely been around and was well worth the visit, but by God I am struggling to think what the place is called. Scouseclaret may be able to help with the specifics

Think you mean the World Museum up by the library. The one on the docks is the Museum of Liverpool which is about the city and it's people. The Slavery and Maritime Museums are also close by on Albert Dock.ArmchairDetective wrote:There's a couple of museums/galleries along the front which are worth a visit. As mentioned the front, a ferry across the Mersey and there are some cracking pubs.

With a "handle" like yours, I'm not surprised you came up with that one !Quicknick wrote:Check your back pockets on a regular basis.
Why not sign up for one of the excellent courses available, such as "How to remove alloy wheels in seconds"

Get back to the 80s! You're much more likely to be the victim of crime in the centre of Manchester than the centre of Liverpool these days.Quicknick wrote:Check your back pockets on a regular basis.

Re: What to do in Liverpool for a few days/nights?
Brilliant. As usual this board does not disappoint. I really appreciate the input. The groupon idea was spot on and a bargain. Cheers Summit. I have copied and pasted most of this and now have a nice little guide to Liverpool with a heavy emphasis on pubs. Perfect. Thank you. I am really looking forward to it. Have a great weekend. UTC
