Tactics today

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sat Apr 01, 2017 4:54 pm

Didnt understand that in the second half. We were playing better than spurs. Gray was troubling them. Was he injured?

Then bringing a centre midfielder onto left win and a left winger onto right wing.

Oh well bring on Stoke.

Bizarre yet again from Dyche although you'd have to assume Gray has a knock/niggle.

I really hope Gray was injured, but he received no treatment or even a word from the physio from what I saw, so don't see how he was

The ugly long ball is pointless when Spurs were sat 40 yards up the pitch when we have no pace on the pitch

Spurs are huge at the back so why try and compete with that? Gray was having a very good game.

Bradys cross late on when he had to get on his left peg shows why he should be on that side.

we could play another 6 hours we still wouldn't have scored, I was bored sh•tless by the 60 min mark. Defour left wing is just embarrassing. Zero width, zero creativity, zero fluidity, zero ball retention.

Again, there are question marks over our starting 11, and quite clearly a desire from Dyche to play within ourselves, and with a framework that doesn't allow for freedom and creativity.

Dyche needs to at least try and find a way of fitting Defour in the team. We are crying out for a bit of quality on the ball.

It's all getting very lazy and predictable from Dyche.

And please, let's stop using our league positioning as an excuse for our failures. Seven games without a win, now 15th, and only 5 points off safety. If we're not careful, we won't have a league position to crow about.

Need some perspective in that we were playing the second best side in the league. We were decent first half but second half was woeful. I rarely criticise Dyche but playing Brady on the right and Defour on the left was inexplicable.

Dyche will target a 1-0 against stoke but IMO will get 1-1.

I thought Arfield was as good as anyone today. He kept Trippier fairly quiet and linked in well. Got himself into a couple of shooting opportunities. Very lacklustre today which is is mildly worrying at the business part of the season. Dyche will boot some arse and realise he made a tactical error in hooking Gray. All will be well

A few strange decisions for me.
Gray was doing his usual thing. He's a danger even with his dodgy 1st touch. I could understand why he brought Vokes on with 2 ball-playing central defenders, but I didn't think it needed it.
I've never liked playing wingers on the wrong side. I always found it easy to defend against when I knew they would have to cut inside to get a ball in...then I'd just pass them on or watch them blast it wide/over and effectively pass the ball back for our goal kick. I thought it was good to bring Brady on, but thought Arfield was the man to replace, not Boyd.
He then had to throw Defour on, probably the correct thing again, but like Brady before him, I thought it was the wrong position to play him in.

Today, I think changes worked against us. That happens. There's no need to start a witch-hunt. Spurs are a very good side. It was disappointing when it was a fairly even first 45. SD gets the vast majority of decisions correct. I readily afford him mistakes. We are still in a much better position than we should be given our resources.

Ah well. Disappointing but we should move on together. Sticking together is the way forward in this situation. Look what's happened at Arsenal when fingers get pointed, likewise at Bournemouth when they went through their dip, Liverpool, Man U too.

Stick together fellow clarets. Keep it in perspective. Go again.

The line up was fine, the tactics at the start were fine and there was something in that game for us up until half time.

If you're chasing the game though and you have two forwards on the pitch who are decent aerially, and a wide man who has a decent cross on him and is predominantly left footed then PUT HIM ON THE CHUFFING LEFT AND GET SOME CHUFFING BALLS INTO THE BOX!

The two forwards aren't good enough to be having the wide man coming inside and playing them slide balls into feet.

Not Sean's finest day today.

It's hard and a tad unfair to knock individual players for what was really a collective mare from top to bottom. It is now for SD to treat these next 8 games with a bit more imagination, now is not the time to lose that team ethos...a lot of finger pointing after both goals today, 1st time I've seen that. Let's dust ourselves down and give Stoke a proper game.

Dyche on Vokes substitution
We tried to play more robust and direct by bringing Vokes on
But it dident work.
Spurs played 30 further up the pitch once Gray went off
It's one thing playing long ball
But kicking the ball up field and not a Burnley player within 50 yards of it is just shite

If we win on tuesday, 3 points from these 2 games will bo good. Better to win one and lose one {3 points} than a couple of respectable draws {2points}

Thought we did well first half. Game changed on a bizarre substitution. Gray certainly didn't look injured and didn't receive any treatment in the dugout.

Awful second half. Need to get Brady and Defour in the team on Tuesday desperate for some creativity.

Unfortunately there are two halves to a game. That corner in the second
half from Arfield just about summed up our second half performance.

Yes, the opposition were streets ahead of us in all aspects of the beautiful game,
but that does not excuse the seeming inability to accurately kick a dead ball or pass
to a fellow team mate who is only feet away. Too many off days today and some baffling
tactical decisions from our esteemed leader. I am not a fan of Gray by any stretch of the

Any road up, onward and upward and let's hope that Stoke feel the full force of the backlash

We are what we are. All our stars have to be aligned for us to do well, often that happens, but when the stars are out of alignement we are in trouble. Several unfortunate aspects came together today: We often do not come back from international breaks well. We often do not defend corners well. Barton had an unusual off game. Same for Hendrick. Dyche made an odd substitution. Even Keane didn't seem his usual comfortable self. All in all a poor afternoon. When the man of the match is a left back and yet we conceded two and didn't score you know it's just been one of those days. Put it behind us and re group for Tuesday.

Zero creativity or future in that starting 11 I'm afraid. However I suspect it will be same again on Tuesday - Dyche said in the post match that he was happy with the team selection. I'd love to see us string a few passes together one day, it's ugly stuff for the main part -got even uglier following the questionable substitution of Gray, so we could spend even more time hitting it long.

Given that he is all we have got that worries defenders and certainly keeps them occupied and thinking,, then yes I would pick him without a doubt.

I appreciate that he has to feed on scraps, which can't be easy, but in the premier league you don't get many opportunities and you have to take what comes along with both hands. If it's speed you want and ability to run all day then you may as well employ Mo Farah and a sprinter.

Could you not say that about half of our team (apart from the sprinter bit obviously...)?

If we had Mo Farah in our squad I think he'd be first name on the team sheet. He certainly fits into the framework.

Andre is our most dangerous player and I reckon he'd have scored more goals if Defour or Brady would have played every game with him. If we flog him at the end of this season to a team who can play a ball through to him and he plays every week I bet he scores 15 goals.

Three or four times in that first half when we countered or had momentum in good positions Gray's first touch (sometimes his second) either lost the momentum or the ball.

If he plays for any other team he'll still have to be able to do a bit with the ball. It won't be all defence splitting passes where he's clean through and just has the goalie to beat.

He shouldn't have been subbed though because with him on we could play further up the pitch because he occupies the minds of defenders because of his pace.

Hendrick aside, today's starting XI was players from last year.

The closer we get to that, the harder goals and results will be to come by. We tried that in 2014/15 and it didn't work.

If Defour & Gudmundsson need a game, I suggest we urgently arrange one and get them back in full contention.

Dyche's signings look good ones on paper but they don't fit the framework so they can't get in the team. God knows why we signed Defour/Westwood/Gudmundsson (i like all 3) but they dont run around like headless chickens so they have no hope of regular game time unless its Defour back at left wing which is laughable and insulting to him.

Today was one of those days where you have to accept that by the end of the game, we were outclassed. No shame in that, I reckon Spurs, with Southampton, are easily the best footballing sides we've seen at the Turf this season.
There's no point in pointing fingers at individuals or Dyche's tactics - Spurs were better than us in all departments and would have continued to be so no matter what we tried.
Fair play, move on.

Spot on ag. Although we did pretty well for the first 50. The sub of gray pretty much handed the initiative to Spurs - it was a real headscratcher. And FFS Sean change it straight away when they score. Their first goal was coming from the moment Gray went off and I'm surprised Dyche didn't see that - no need to see if the current 11 would get back into it because for the last 10 minutes they'd been getting further and further out of it.

There's no point in pointing fingers at individuals or Dyche's tactics - Spurs were better than us in all departments and would have continued to be so no matter what we tried.
Fair play, move on.
Reluctant like.
