Well, I'm off to our holiday cottage for a week in Falmouth tomorrow morning, so I'll let you know how wonderful it is again - and give you an update on the road situation :)

The Anderson at Fortrose is a great place to stay the other side of Inverness. Dozens or real ales, hundreds of interesting imported beers (including a selection of Mikkeller) and a whisky menu that's like a phone book. The food is excellent as well. I always stay there when I'm up that way.

I love Cornwall! Go to Hendra holiday park (Newquay) at least once a year. The only time i go to Scotland is to watch the Open that doesn't mean i wouldn't go there for a get away I just stick with what i know (including not voting :D ) Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are visited every year for a few weeks by the WMC family.

If you can get away from all the tourists, Cornwall is fantastic
Which is why you have to go in the off season!

And Scotland is far from full of miserable people - like anywhere. The tourist industry thrives there with people returning again and again. You don't get that if they are greeted by miserable people. That goes for anywhere.

Opted for Isle of Skye in early Autumn.

May need somewhere to stay night before and night after to break journey there and back up.

Have 4 nights on Skye.

I think Cornwall is great for young people, particularly if they like surfing.

Hiking and walking, Scotland

Beachy stuff and walking, Cornwall

I don't understand this argument about the traffic. Just get up early and go, and come back setting off about 8 pm. You'll be home before you know it.

Scotland.
I've always refused to move on the grounds that I love being so close to the Dales and the Lakes. I've been to Cornwall and it is very nice, worth a visit but not a patch on up here. Even the beaches in Northumberland are better. BUT Skye is absolutely stunning. Looking over the sound to the main land it even puts the Lakes to shame. Lots to do as well, but the view round every corner, from any angle, it just can't be beaten.
