Barnes yesterday
Not much been said of his elbow on Ayala yesterday.
Think Ayala made a meal of the initial incident. Wasnt the only one. But Barnes is very lucky (or clever and I suspect its the former) that the linesman wasnt on his side of the pitch.
Im sure Dyche will have noted it.
Winding the opposition up is a great tactic and pays off quite often. But petulance like that could have cost us more than it has this season.
I hope Barnes keeps his edge. But things like dont help his reputation and I cant help but think are a reason his cards are marked by refs before we start the game.
Needs to be smarter. There are cameras all around now. Rough them up. Dusrupt their game. Annoy them. Dont blatantly elbow someone off the ball while theyre down already claiming you elbowed them.

I'm glad he's in our team/squad...every decent team I would suggest, has a player like Barnes in it.
He'll do for me.

Re: Barnes yesterday
Nothing wrong with how Barnes goes about his business. Every single team we've played this year as a big uncomprising niggling cheating ******* some have had two or three and Barnes is ours.
We aren't going to stay in this league unless we cheat and bend the rules like the other 19 teams, a sad endightment but it's the modern game.

Re: Barnes yesterday
I think the last few games have shown us how best to use Barnes at this level: off the bench for the last 20 minutes or so.
Quite affective when he came on against Stoke but he's offered us next to nothing from the start of games for a while now. Far too concerned about throwing himself into defenders and appealing for free kicks rather than actually trying to create something in the final third.
Surprised to see him stay on ahead of Gray.

Re: Barnes yesterday
I think Barnes' ability to influence games is often overlooked. In games where referees have sought to clamp down on his style of gameplay we have been seriously limited. I think this is a key reason why we struggle away but do well at home. The ref gets influenced by the crowd - at home this works in our favour as Barnes is able to disrupt the defenders and give Gray or Vokes the space needed. Away from home he gets nowt and therefore neither do we!

I don't think it's true to say he hasn't cost us yet...what about his first half sending off at Everton 2 years ago for one of the wildest "tackles" you'd ever see ?
Love him but needs to be careful.

I do fear for him against Everton if he starts. A very vocal crowd over any decision and we have had a player sent off both times we have been in the prem including Barnes last time.

Re: Barnes yesterday
It seems like all refs are clamping down on him. He's been found out and it's seriously limiting his effectiveness. It didn't help that he got himself booked for a ridiculous and pointless foul yesterday preventing him from playing with that edge.Foulthrow wrote:I think Barnes' ability to influence games is often overlooked. It's easy to point to statistics and say that's he's not a liability but yesterday he was again lucky to stay on the pitch.
I like Barnes, he offers more than Vokes but his antics are becoming tiresome. I'd hope he's used as an impact sub next season which is when he's at his best.

Biggest problem is he doesn't score.
Re: Barnes yesterday
Barnes should carry on doing what he's doing because if he doesn't he will be less effective.

Re: Barnes yesterday
Barnes throwing himself about is crucial to how we play. We create very little from open play and set pieces are critical to our goal threat. He wins some he loses some but he's doing exactly what Dyche is asking of him, that bit is obvious.JohnMcGreal wrote:I think the last few games have shown us how best to use Barnes at this level: off the bench for the last 20 minutes or so.

Re: Barnes yesterday
As Rileybobs has already stated, the officials are on to him now. They know his game and they're no longer falling for it. Hence why many of Barnes' both arms up in the air appeals are falling on deaf ears now.RocketLawnChair wrote:Barnes throwing himself about is crucial to how we play. If anything his playing style is actually hindering him, because there are times when he genuinely is being fouled by the defender and the referee doesn't give anything.
I don't mind him being used as an impact sub late on games, but I'll be disappointed if we're still starting him up front next season.

Re: Barnes yesterday
Barnes is a great player, he gets stuck in hard, which we want, but dirty, I don't think so. Too many pussies in the game who like to make a meal of every challenge and cry to the referee. If Barnes was playing 30 years ago he wouldn't be giving away free kicks, let alone collecting yellows. The worlds changed, I hope Ash doesn't.

Goodison park next week.
Another red for Ashley??
Could be the perfect game for him to bully a young/slow /inexperienced defence

What does this even mean? I don't know how you can say Barnes doesn't make a meal of challenges. That's his entire plan to win us free-kicks and you best believe he's the first one in the refs ear. 30 years ago Barnes wouldn't be giving away free-kicks, he also wouldn't be winning them either.

Re: Barnes yesterday
I can't disagree, he does play for fouls, and he does give the verbal to the ref, bit people complain that he's a dirty player when in fact he's doing what every other forward in the league does. Yet apparently Ash is dirty, the rest aren't.KefkaClaret wrote:What does this even mean? I don't know how you can say Barnes doesn't make a meal of challenges. Of all 3 main strikers, Ash is the one I would keep. Purely for the menace factor, would do well with a better striker at his side.

gives as good as he gets. top player to have in your squad.
Re: Barnes yesterday
he's a p rick, he can pack his bags along with Dyche. I used to like Barnes but the constant wrestling matches are annoying, he's the biggest cheat in the league and barely offers a goal threat.

Re: Barnes yesterday
We created very little yesterday. The best chance was Brady's free kick following a foul on Barnes. He's the only player who has consistently won us decisions in dangerous areas. Take that away and we become much less of a threat. He's very good at what he does and as has been stated he's obviously playing to instruction. If he didn't follow those instructions he wouldn't be starting games.
As noted above pretty much every team at this level has a player like him, admittedly some are more technically gifted but he's been an integral part of our success this season.

He can be brilliant though: that goal at Anfield; the one at home to Wigan in Dyche's first promotion season. I agree we don't see enough of that.

The brand of football, the cup run, the general atmosphere around the place and the day out at Wembley. Give me that again over a Dyche promotion where we scraped most wins, 2nd best most games and probably timewasted for at least 7 full games over a 46 game season. You forget Dyche had a £10m striker upfront, Coyle had a team built by Cotts on peanuts bar Eagles and Pato who cost less than Boyd combined. Oh yeah and under Coyle we had Blake and Wade, so i'll always prefer that team/season.fidelcastro wrote:Yet under Dyche we've finished 2nd and 1st with 93 points, plus we look like we're going to stay up this season, but the Coyle season was better?
