how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
I think this is key to our future success....any signings need to believe we are pie and peas...not prawn sandwich...I know Dyche will want to keep it that way as it takes the pressure off him....I also think that next season ( providing we stay up ) is a huge season for us...we could develop into a regular mid div team...with an enviable bank balance...remarkable as that would have seemed only 5 years ago.

Re: how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
I'm ok with it. We ARE little. Certainly in comparison to almost all the other PL clubs. And there's a load of championship clubs that are bigger too.
I quite like being the underdog in most situations, and I'm not about to start whinging that people describe us as little when we are exactly that. Our town is little, our ground is little. We're just little. And old. Little old Burnley. The mighty Liverpool came to turf moor and were walloped by little old Burnley. Love it.

Even though they've been in the PL for a few seasons, does anyone consider Swansea to be a bigger club than us?

Re: how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
Arguably we're the same sort of size as Swansea, Watford, Hull and probably Palace.
Swansea and Watford have smaller grounds then us don't they?
WBA are no bigger either, nor Stoke.
Its only really the regular top 6-8 who you could argue are a bigger club in regards to stature in the game.
Even West Ham aren't that big, just in the eyes of their fans and the arse licking media.

Re: how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
Swansea in terms of size are bigger...and with not too many welsh teams in the football leagues I dare say they have quite a large catchment area...I am fine with little old Burnley...one in the eye for all those failed clubs who have just thrown money at it and failed miserably.....would love to see us get back to having real quality youth players coming through...a bit like southampton...just finding an odd star would make it worthwhile.

Size is no measure of quality. A horse may be well endowed but that does not make it a sensitive lover.

Re: how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
Burnley are not old ans little . It is our way of thinking which is wrong . We have to change our mentality and think that we are comparable to any other club of the PL . After all football is played with 11 players a side . Why bother how we are called ?
Burnley is an old club having played football for more than a century . We have also won trophies .Now that our club is likely to stay in the PL , it is from here that we should consider rebuilding the club to higher potentialities .

Our actually catchment area is bigger than any club with a population equal to its hypothesis.

Don't know the numbers or statistics, but aren't West Brom a lot bigger than us?
Or have we caught them up?

We are a "town" team - and should be proud of that! Our town's population is very small compared with most who have graced the Prem and our support, comparatively is fantastic. We have a long and successful history and we are founder members of the Football League. Little.....yes. Old.......yes. Wouldn't have it any other way! UTC!!!

Re: how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
Agree with Joey and Dave. We should never forgot who we are and the values of the town and team- hard-working, humble, realistic. But we’re confident and ambitious, too- and should do everything possible to shed that “little old” label- and certainly not play on it, ourselves. Watford, Swansea, Bournemouth, Hull, - there should be no inferiority complex vs. any of these. Even clubs that I’d concede are “bigger”- Sunderland, Boro, Derby, Leeds, Forest – we’re much better run at the moment- so should expect to give these an absolute d1cking on the pitch, too.
Look at the job West Brom and Stoke have done in convincing the football world that they’re clubs to be reckoned with (which they now are). They have been behind us at times in my living memory- did they constrain themselves with small time, “little” thinking? I doubt it. I’m aware that Stoke have had good financial backing- but they’ve done a decent job at locking in at their “new” level of status, without looking back. We can do the same, and slowly build each year. Seeing strong evidence from the club that we have that aspiration.
Perception is everything…..we have the opportunity to brand ourselves as 1 of the top 20 clubs in the country, long term- if we can start to “act” like it- and we should be doing everything possible to do just that. Not pat ourselves on the back for being the little team that has a “right good go” at the bigger clubs. With TV money being such a large percentage of revenue for most, we have no reason to hold ourselves back in our thinking and ambitions to grow further. Survival at this level for the next few years enables us to continue to modernize our infrastructure, boost our brand and evolve the club in general. With other clubs in Lancs struggling, we can capitalize on our position to slowly capture fans in the extended catchment area. I believe the club has this target which is encouraging- a useful by-product of our tremendous community work.
Very happy with the club and excited about the future- and I don’t think that we have accepted that we’ve hit a ceiling, yet. I hope not.
All my opinion, of course. Completely respect those of all fellow Clarets.

I think we need to keep going as we are , sir Sean is developing us as a club where young up and coming players can make a reputation and move on.
I genuinely think unless you have a super rich owner no club no matter the size can only be at best a mid table team.

As long as we are in the Premier League, we'll always be regarded as little old Burnley.
It's not a negative to me. I think that it's great.
I've always been proud about who we are.

Sounds like a cue for a new song:
"I'm prayin for rain on the Turf today,
Cos we're 6-0 down at half-time to Citeh"
Maybe those days ARE GONE! Not quite...

It depends what's more important when talking about how big/little a club is considered, Size of catchment area or recent success?

Burnley itself will never get bigger, but some of the minds who support the club need to be more "accomodating".

If we stay in the league for more than two seasons we won't be regarded at all, we will be filed under the likes of Stoke, West Brom and Watford. Just a meaningless existence

I've never understood this 'who is the bigger club' malarkey - surely all depends on what factor is being measured. Capacity / turnover / silverware / shoe size / pies sold !!!

I see it as all of that (ok, perhaps not the pie count), rolled up into one. So all variables taken into account.Sutton-Claret wrote:I've never understood this 'who is the bigger club' malarkey - surely all depends on what factor is being measured. Re: how long can we be regarded as " little old Burnley".
In some of the standard measures of 'club size' we're going to be littler than most in the top 2 divisions. And we're older than all but a handful in the country. It'll take a fair amount of time for that to wear off. Another thing I reckon is the Turf, half of it is old, the Bob Lord stand (the one on TV most of the time) is little, we're in the town centre and we have wooden seats. We'd lose the 'little old' tag far quicker if we moved into a soulless, out of town, plastic bowl but I'd guess 99% of us don't want that.
I reckon the pride we'll have if we stay up comes from the 'little oldness'. I for one hope we don't lose the little old underdog mentality, it might be all we have to sustain us at this level in the absence of a rich owner.

OK Claretblue, I wasn't quite sure, I was caught up with the tune and the video. Let me think:
I'm prayin for rain on the Turf today,
Cos we're 5-0 down at half-time to citeh
And the cameras of SKY they are a rollin
Like the hills all covered in heather
Around the way,
I take a sup...
Of the claret...
And I'm a hazy,
Crazy,
But I wouldn't support another
Any day.
Come on folks, watch the video of Dean Martin singing and inspire yourself to write the next 'claret' verse. I'll have a think too.
