Fridge Freezer Part - Extortionate!

Post by Alanstevensonsgloves » Mon Apr 24, 2017 3:34 pm

Hi All,

I know that on CM we had a resident white goods expert who worked in a shop - was it Big Dave? I have snapped the hinge of the freezer compartment door - a tiny bit of plastic. Online its £13 plus inc P&P to replace for something that I presume costs £0.04 to make in China. Why the immense mark up???!

Does anyone know where these can be sourced cheaper??? Google hasn't helped.
http://www.spares4appliances.co.uk/frid ... nge-p43611" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I need the upper one.

Failing that, Id rather chisel one out of granite than pay the above!

You'd think there would be a price freeze on things like this.

Yes maybe 4p but they still need to make it....probably special mould. Pay the guy to do it. Ship it. Somebody else mark it up and store. Do you not buy clothes as they also cost more to buy than it takes to make?

Also why presume they have made such a mark up. Not everything is made in China and not everything is cheap when you are looking at specialist items.

Good luck with the granite.....you will need it

I got some Nike trainers for the missus, from Nike online.

They cost me £130, but they're made in Vietnam so I suspect they cost about a 1/4 of that to actually make for Nike.

This has been driven by societies demand for cheaper products, meaning production has gone abroad for a lot of countries,
If you had to pay UK manufacturing costs then you'd pay a lot more for most items.

This is something people don't take into consideration but have a look round Burnley at the number of old/closed factories and ask yourself where all the work went....
Lamberth Howath Mill was the old Shoe factory wasn't it?
They used to make everything and then it changed to putting "made in britain" labels on products that were shipped in from abroad, then it switched to just boxing them up I think.
All down to expensive Uk production costs.

I guess, looking at the picture, that it's the little plastic peg bit that has snapped off. Do you still have the bit? If so, see if you can fix it back onto the rest of the part with a small nut & bolt. You could try superglue but the part looks like it might be polythene which superglue doesn't stick.

They know you need it and it's a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

I need new freezer drawers at £30 (each) - that takes the p*ss a bit though for me.

(Why do they make them out of such brittle plastic when theyre going to be frozen stiff?!)

No I mean drawers that go in the freezer.

In my bondage, I only use a 12 volt car battery.

The plastic hinge will more than likely have been made in China for a few pence, you're right. Then how many people/organisations take profit out of the deal to get it to you?
It's the way of the world.
You could always nip across to China to cut out the middlemen.
In the trade, the part costs £10.61 + vat and if I didn't order it as part of a much bigger order, there'd be a £6.95 + vat P&P charge too.
Get it bought!

I work in video productions, imagine losing plate, or a particular lead or connector thats unique to a particular piece of equipment, or a battery. A bit of plastic costs £100's.

Ransom are listing it as £23.75 + del charge. Not a company we use regularly, as their name would suggest. AWS from Norwich are quoting £19.97 fully inc.

Hi Cleveleys, I understand how manufacturing and pricing works. So say this tiny bit of plastic is made in China, shipped to the UK, marked up and stored. Thus we get from a tiny production cost to the selling price of £12 odd. Very reasonable you think.

And another freezer compartment hinge sold by the same UK company with presumably the same pricing policy on 'freezer parts', almost identical to the one I am looking at...http://www.spares4appliances.co.uk/frid ... nge-p75448" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A very reasonable £4.95.

And look at what I bought recently on ebay.....
http://tinyurl.com/ldcdz8a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Made in China, far more raw materials used, including the addition of metal. Yet can be made, shipped, marked up and stored for £3.99

Explain that clever clogs ;)

Thanks to the posters with helpful replies.

Hygena/Diplomat/Schreiber/Westinghouse et al were just badges, not real manufacturers, so you've got to find out who actually made the machine; in this case Gias (Hoover/Candy) or Baumatic (who went bust and were in turn taken over by Gias). To muddy the waters further, Gias often sourced parts from GDHA (Belling/Stoves) which all leads to a mess of pricing depending on who can source the part from where.
(i.e, Baumatic supply part for machine, Gias purchase parts from Baumatic and add their mark up who in turn sell it on to Stoves who add their mark up further before supplying it to companies for retail with their mark up, because everyone needs to make their cut). Hence £12 for a part that should cost £4.

I'm presuming yours is a Servis machine, a company which went bust a good few years back after being taking over by one of the Merloni brothers (Ariston) and production of which ended up in the hands of the Bernstein group (Westinghouse) and are now trading again, though I suspect they are made by Arcelik (Beko) or Haier, possibly the second and third biggest companies in the industry. A company going bust usually means obsolescence which further inflates the price, albeit artificially, because no one is going to buy a new £300 machine for the sake of a £12 part.

Ironically, the other part you've linked for £4.95 is Indesit, the other Merloni brother who bought Hotpoint, Creda, Cannon et al (now owned by Whirlpool and as such are probably now the biggest company in the world). Indesit manufacture their own parts and sell direct to those with a trade account - so half a dozen lots of mark up is reduced to two.

I feel the OP's pain because I'm equally curmudgeonly about such matters.

However, the rule of thumb it's best to apply to these things is - if you've already spent hours looking for one, just how valuable is your time?

How much value should you place on looking around for another two hours to save a few extra pounds?

If you "pay" yourself minimum wage then another two hours looking equates to £14.40 wasted. That's more than the price you're complaining about.

I'm all for getting good value but sometimes you have to bite the bullet.
