Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Joey's statement is a good one, a complex and troubled individual throughout his life but gave his all for Burnley on the field. Will be remembered as a good footballer who contributed to our recent successes, a pity it had to end this way.
Good luck in your future life Joey and many thanks.

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Thanks for the update Tony........
Has Joey bet on football whilst he has been playing for us?
I think our club has been harshly treated by the F.A. both in this instance and with Andre.....
Up the Clarets.......
Edit..........Sorry have re-read the article.....it seems he was betting whilst he was our player......

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Our club hasn't been treated at all frankinwales - we knew the charges were over him when we signed him and the punishment is for the player.
There are precedents paulatky where the bans have been nothing like as severe - I really am staggered at the severity of it.

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
We haven't been harshly treated by the FA. He was charged before we re-signed him so we knew the risks and you'd think we mitigated them in his contract.frankinwales wrote:Thanks for the update Tony........

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
It`s a complete joke, the bellends at the FA have once again made themselves look like what they really are, incompetent, unqualified fools!
He`ll appeal and get it reduced no doubt and I said a while ago if the idiots at the FA hit him hard he should drag their arse through the courts because legally they can`t impose a punishment like that, and it would embarrass them no end. Joey hasn`t had a decent game for a while so I really don`t think we`ll miss him on the field.

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
I really hope his legal team get stuck into this. He has a right to earn a living and the F A have no legal right to take that away from him, which in effect taking into account his age etc that's exactly what they are doing. This could be interesting.

If he appeals would the ban be suspended until the appeal is heard?

I don't think it's staggering at all. I said some time ago that this could end his career, based on the bans handed down to others who made similar offences but much fewer times. This shouldn't be a shock to anyone, nor should it be deemed unfair.

Unlikely since he's only appealing the length of the ban. He's admitted the charge.jtv wrote:If he appeals would the ban be suspended until the appeal is heard?

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Hi bob, football makes a lot of money out of betting sponsorship. But, a lot of this money would be lost if there is any suggestion that games are influenced by footballers. So, the rules are there to protect the source of income and the rules mean nothing if they aren't enforced.bob-the-scutter wrote:It`s a complete joke, the bellends at the FA have once again made themselves look like what they really are, incompetent, unqualified fools!

I've no legal experience. I can imagine that there are many occasions when a long sentence is imposed - and then the sentence is reduced on appeal. Whether this is the case for Joey time will tell. However, the fact the penalty starts at 18 months, even if later reduced, may be justified in enforcing the rules - and protecting the betting income that the game and the players benefits.
I can imagine that the knowledge that the FA were now deciding his sentence was on Joey's mind on Sunday.

Wow, didn't expect that, wonder of he told them they were a load of two hats, well not to worry we were going to get beat Saturday anyway as we are away, so no worries there, hopefully this will make other sports people look at there gambling habits and make them real them in, the rules are there for a reason, sadly he could have backed as many donkeys as he liked as long as they had four legs and not two.

There must be others very worried now - he can't have been the only one
Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Thanks for the good times Joey. Seems the FA were happy to have the hammer in their hands and Joey in their sights after a long career of him being an asshat.
Still.. he was good for us, at least until lately.

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Dexter Blackstock is probably the most similar recent case (May 2014) http://www.thefa.com/-/media/files/thef ... -2014.ashx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hundreds of bets including a few on his own team when he wasn't playing (although no bets for them to lose which attracts a more severe penalty). Was given a 3 month ban which was suspended if he complied with the rules in the future.
Or Kevin Leadbetter who made a few hundred bets including some on his team including bets to lose. However, for a few games he was playing where he tipped them to lose. He got a 12 month ban http://www.thefa.com/-/media/files/thef ... -2016.ashx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Given the above, 18 months sounds harsh.

Staggering sentence. Was expecting a ban but no way near that length.
If these are any indication of his success rate he's not exactly making a profit.
30 bets & only 3 wins

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Amusing to see people make out its a vendetta against Burnley.
Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
I'm amazed at how much he's spent; between 15 and 20 million quid. OMG. 15000 bets @ £150 a go.
At least he's been transparent by all accounts.
He's right about the absolutely huge pressure put upon fans by the media-betting scenario. Personally I think one should only be allowed to bet on events in one's own country. It does seem a bit two-faced of the F.A.
How about the F.A. in tandem with the government pass a law to say no more advertising for betting companies, along the lines of no more advertising for tobacco?
Maybe that will be Joey's next move, to politicise his views, although he's proably got other things to do.
He's been a good player for Burnley and all the best for the future.

Shocked to hear what Joey got today again the FA wanted to hit him hard and end his footballing days .
Question , do you think the club will continue pay him until the end of his contract or will be be ripped up ?

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
This is a staggering punishment. Totally over the top and no doubt influenced by his reputation and because he is so well known.
Joey has a point in how much football is now up to its necks with involvement with betting companies. He has admitted he is addicted and the FA have acknowledged that he had no way of being involved in any of the games where he bet against his own team.No one was expecting him to get of lightly but 18 months that will effectively end his career is nothing but draconian.

I'm sure that the honourable men at the FA discounted all of Barton's various criticisms towards them over the years when they decided on their punishment...
Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
He is not a successful punter, that's for certain! Even his dead certs went wrong!
Definitely an addiction and that is what should be taken into consideration.
His statement is a good one. A great shame all round.
Thank you Joseph Barton for being a true Claret and helping us achieve some miracles. Good luck.

I'm sure somebody on another thread said he bet against his own team mate scoring while being on the field himself. I know he placed the bet against his then team mate Samaras although Im not sure if he was actually on the field.Cirrus_Minor wrote:This is a staggering punishment. I'm sure he will sign a lucrative deal with sky as a pundit now. It won't be the last we see of him.

Looking at the hit rate he had with his bets, I think we finally know the identity of claretpunter.

Leon Osman was on radio earlier questioning why the bookies were happy to take his bets for ten years without any questions. He said he opened a betting account after finishing playing and within 6 weeks it had been blocked and that he had to explain to the company he was no longer involved as a player so couldn't influence the games.

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Great statement by Joey. Most certainly worded by his lawyers, but hitting the nail on the head.
Pity it will do him no good as I fear his career is over now.
FA and football in general has fallen victim to gambling firms for many years now, but Clubs are also to blame as so many of them (including ours) are opting to have betting firms on their shirts.
Betting is a serious problem though, not only for the richer sportsmen such as Joey but also for the average Joey's who do not have the means to support their addiction.

Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Blackstock betted at the same rate as Barton, just over 100 bets per year and about £150 per bet, and got no suspension at all. The only differences are (i) being younger, he hadn't been doing it as long - 6 years as against 10; (ii) he didn't have the record of 15 bets against his own registered club, like Barton did. I'm pretty sure Barton's appeal will cite Blackstock as precedent, and it will be interesting to see the written reasons why this commission went so far away from Blackstock's sentence.

Would be ways round that. Say for example he became a free agent & disassociated himself from the FA extreme radical measures I know but from a legal point of view nothing could stop that. Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
Take away Joey Bartons past mistakes, 18 months and thirty thousands pounds is certainly high in anybody's book when it comes down to the punishment dished out for someone who is clearly just a poor gambler with a problem. I can only think that those responsible for hanging the Pendle Witches were part of this decision making process ! The FA have got themselves involved in something that has in essence been amplified beyond all sensible reasoning, most likely originating from his Rangers nightmare and their desire to terminate his contract. Joey Barton is often prejudged for his misdemeniers of yesteryear all of which have NOT remained unpunished. This is bullying of the finest by the FA and all the vitriolic trolls that seem to follow Joey Barton ! I have taken a close interest in Joey Barton since he signed for Burnley and I can confirm that he has been magnificent throughout his tenure in respect to his performances and conduct on and off the pitch. He has been a great example to others of someone who had clearly gained control of their anger issues ! Not sure now though because I think this level of punishment dished out by the FA would lead even Mother Therasa, if she was alive, into stalking the associated FA panel and exploring their every own 'skeleton in every cupboard' and maybe delivering the odd Lancashire kiss here and there !?! Shame on you the FA and the frenzied trolls who seem to be the only ones who support this level of punishment ! This is a sad day for Joey Barton and all those associated with Burnley ! I only hope that our own Alister Campbell can work his spin because Joey Barton clearly needs it and deserves it. UTC

My error for misreading your post.
Re: ARTICLE: Joey gets a staggering 18 month ban
The way it works in horse racing if (eg) a jockey is warned off, is that the jockey is banned from racecourses and stables etc., and also the racecourses and stables are banned from letting him in. Therefore even if the jockey says he has retired and the Jockey Club (or BHA, I think they are now) doesn't have any jurisdiction any more, he is still banned because the BHA does have jurisdiction over the racecourses and stables. It's a draconian penalty, not used that often, and I don't think it's been tested to the extreme in court.Jakubclaret wrote:Would be ways round that. In the scenario I mentioned earlier joey would become disassociated from the FA & all the shebang that comes with it.
