Defours replacement
Who would you like to see us replace Defour with in summer?
I think Stephens would be a good buy but to supplement a Defour type not replace.
Defour is definitely off this summer. Doubt he will feature again unless we are desperate and even then I would be surprised.
I hope this doesnt stop us exploring the continent and also hope it doesnt put foreigners off coming here. If the money is right it shouldnt but given our record overseas they might want a bit more just in case their reputation ends up damaged through lack of games etc.
For the record i dont think this is strictly Dyche, the club or scoutings fault. Maybe a combination of factors. But we need to do better in the foreign market if we are to progress.
I hope we can sign a proven, experienced and creative international. That means we definitely need to look abroad.

Re: Defours replacement
For a bit of cover that wouldn't cost much, Aiden McGeady, he's been bloody good for Preston this year.
Re: Defours replacement
...and you wonder why you get all your threads pulled?
Re: Defours replacement
I wouldn't be against Defour staying for another season. I agree that it's unlikely to happen.
Stephens would be a steady signing but as you say, not a Defour replacement. Cairney as mentioned on the other thread could be an option (certainly expensive) but how much of a gamble?
I'm happy to have plenty workhorses with that bit more about them, but really want us to sign someone with that bit of 'on the edge of your seat' about them.
Quite who that is or should be, God only knows!!

Thing is.....if Defour can't get a game, why do we think a ' Defour type' might?
Perhaps if our current Defour can just quit the ciggies?

Re: Defours replacement
I still harbour hopes that Defour will stay, and that with a close season and then a pre-season behind him, he'll be fitter and better conditioned for the Premier League and we'll see the best of him.
But if he does go, I'd like to see us try and sign a left footed version of him as a replacement - someone like Tom Cairney, who has a good range of passing, an eye for a pass, but is also a decent enough athlete to get around the park to do the defensive work Dyche demands. W'e've plenty of right footed midfielders, and I suspect it will be helpful if Defour's replacement is comfortable playing on the flank in a midfield 4 as well as in the middle. With Brady inked in for the left flank, a left footer to play narrow on the right and come inside would be the ideal balance (especially if they have the ability to hit a cross field pass to release Brady or the full back, as Cairney certainly does). Other options in a similar mould include Will Hughes and Sam Clucas and Carroll at Swansea, presuming one of those goes down.
I think someone like Stephens is the potential replacement for Barton/Marney.
I am not sure we're ever going to go for a true "out of your seat" option because Dyche likes a team that pulls together in attack or defence, but someone like Cairney might be as close as we're realistically going to get.

Re: Defours replacement
Cos as we've discussed before, if Defour departs we'll be looking for a more immediately effective version of Defour, because Defour won't leave to go to a bigger Premier League club, I'll have you a bet on that.Royboyclaret wrote:Thing is.....if Defour can't get a game, why do we think a ' Defour type' might?

I'm not sure that we will either, Spice but I do think we need something / someone that helps us to move on a little more from the functional.claretspice wrote:I still harbour hopes that Defour will stay, and that with a close season and then a pre-season behind him, he'll be fitter and better conditioned for the Premier League and we'll see the best of him.

Cairney would be great but I'd also like a winger with some real pace at least.

Really not sure why we need to replace Defour. He has by no means been integral to the team or the season, so why do we need a replacement for somebody who doesn't play?

Posted a selection of defenders, midfielders and forwards several days ago, so my possible additions would be:
Midfield:
Tom Cairney
Tom Carroll
John Swift
Dale Stephens
Will Hughes
Aaron Mooy

Re: Defours replacement
Hughes won't be leaving Derby this summer unless its for silly money.
I suspect it would £20million minimum, because he's on good money with a number of years left on his contract.

Ha - fair enough. Ive changed my mind a bit on this one. That was always the impression i had of Cairney from his Blackburn days. But he seems to have spent a fair bit of time playing on the right side of a 4 for Fulham this season, in a team which has pressed pretty well. I'd still say work rate and aggression would be the question marks over him, but i can see a logic to him.

We need more creativity, perhaps Brady and JBG can supply it, but I think we need more options if we are to score more.wickdkewlclaret wrote:Really not sure why we need to replace Defour. He's 22 now and seems to have stood still for a few years, admittedly injuries haven't helped. How many years he's going to sit there festering at Derby?
He probably needs to push for a move.

Hard to know really.Bordeauxclaret wrote:Three quarters worth of reputation one quarter worth of ability.
He's still only 22 and played 160 games for Derby, so there's something about him.
He was also out for a long while last season.
Until he steps into the PL we won't really know, but I don't think he's the same level as Dele Ali is at Spurs, and he's now the benchmark for English wonder kids.

Re: Defours replacement
If he's serious about really moving his career on, he can't stay at the level he is at.
Certainly worth a look I'd have thought.
Cairney has been the best player in the championship this season and loves it down south, not sure he's realistic to be honest

Re: Defours replacement
I'm not saying that the likes of Cairney or Hughes would be interested, but they're not daft suggestions and if we can't show ambition to be interested in the better players in the championship it's a poor do.
