Help required with a Burnley "legends" squad
Help required with a Burnley "legends" squad
For any gamers out there; a friend of mine creates "legends" squads for different clubs for Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) on the PS4. He's got his own PES channel on YouTube and is trying to tap into the market to make a few quid on the side of his job.
He's asked me to put together an all time legends squad for Burnley. Of course I accepted the challenge but I've found it really hard (I've not even managed to get a couple of my own favourite players in - Wade Elliott and Robbie Blake!). My issue has basically been around trying to find place for players from all eras. It would be easy to put all the 60's team in and be done with it, but that's not really the point!
I started with GK's for example and quickly got to Dawson, Stevenson and Blacklaw. However, it means most people probably won't know who any of them are given Stevenson would be classed as the "modern day" keeper and he stopped playing for us in 1983 ha ha! So I bumped the oldest keeper, Dawson (sorry Jerry), for Marlon Beresford to try and introduce someone from the modern era.
Anyway I'd really appreciate advice on the list below. Firstly are the players in their right positions? When you go back to the days of half-backs etc I find it hard to know whether the players were right or left footed for example. Where was Jimmy McIllroy's prominent position? Was Jimmy Adamson a CB? Basically are there any glaring errors or omissions? All advice is gratefully received!!
GK Adam Blacklaw
GK Alan Stevenson
GK Marlon Beresford
LB Alex Elder
LB Ray Deakin
RB John Angus
RB Brian Laws
CB Brian Miller
CB Jimmy Adamson
CB Steve Davis
CB Michael Duff
LW Leighton James
LW David Eyres
RW Trevor Steven
RW Glen Little
CM Martin Dobson
CM Ralph Coates
CM Peter Noble
CM John Deary
CF Jimmy McIllroy
CF Andy Lochhead
CF Ray Pointer
CF Andy Payton

Jimmy Mc to midfield and stick Willie Irvine in up front, and Ralph to the left wing.

Re: Help required with a Burnley "legends" squad
Blake would have made mine easily, but I know what you mean, most of our "legends" are from times long gone by. From the modern selection I'd have considered:
Blake
Little
Davis
Heaton (should go down as a legend already)
Tripps? (maybe not a legend but one of my fave players recently)
Aside from that I loved that you included Duff. I only have one more question...No Branch?

Jensen for Beresford IMO.
Also I'd want to include Wade and Blake if possible, since on PES the short, tricky players play really well, but can't see how.
Other than that I'd say you have it spot on

I'd say you need some representation from the first half of our existence. Bert Freeman or George Beel perhaps?

Colin McDonald was the current England goalkeeper until he got injured. Jimmy Mac was the finest midfielder ever seen playing for Burnley, not a center forward. Also, I believe our second best midfielder was Brian O'Neill, whilst Keith Newton was slightly better at left back than Deakin. Willie Irvine has got to be in the striker positions.

Irvine and O'Neill were on the long-list I tried to cut down. If Jimmy Mac becomes a midfielder I can put Irvine in. Question is, who do I lose from midfield for McIllroy?!Vino blanco wrote:Colin McDonald was the current England goalkeeper until he got injured. Any of the others. Eyres or Deary for example.

What - no Jimmy Robson? He played for England under 23s, scored in an FA Cup Final for Burnley and won a league championship winner's medal. That's legendary.

Re: Help required with a Burnley "legends" squad
I'd pick legends from the players who played "top division" Div 1 and Premier League. I'd also have on long list all those who got international caps while they were at Burnley.
David Thomas, Brian Flynn, Brian O'Neill and Frank Casper are all worth being on the list.
I wish I knew the players from earlier days.
I'd leave out all players who are still playing pro football.
And, shouldn't a legends team line up 2-3-5?

Dawson......Most appearances.
Angus & Newton......Two of the most cultured wing-backs anywhere, never mind just Claret & Blue.
Adamson....Wonderful footballer.
Boyle....Captain fantastic, FA Cup and First Division.
Kelly....Second only to Jimmy Mac as our best ever midfielder.
McIlroy....Greatest ever.
O'Neil....Superb player and adds steel to that midfield.
James....Fantastic talent.
Beel....Highest goalscorer.
Irvine....Prolific goalscorer.
Plus at least 12 on the subs bench.
