About right for a player of his stature, though 3 years for a 34 year old is a long time.

The thing is, given the current TV deal, paying that to your star player, and other wages lower but in line with that, should see you breaking even.

I would be horrified and quite alarmed if we offered money like that to players at the end of their careers it's frankly ******* madness! The cash cow that is the premier league will not always be the gift that keeps giving it will all blow up in their faces ....hopefully we come out of it unscathed

Oh dear, though I wish em well this really could end in tears. This kind of money for players with a club on 12k gates and low market interest, could end in a hideous crash and burn scenario with nothing left to show for it 3yrs down the line except a half eaten pack of garibaldis and a large pile of heavily soiled underwear (left in haste by the players, directors and tea lady when the bailiffs arrive)

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
He apparently wants a £6 million signing on fee too according to one report...

So big wages and a fee of sorts.

If we sign a player for £12m this summer and offer £35,000 a week on a 3 year deal are we going to see the same over reacting on here?!

Talking in football terms it's not that much considering there is no transfer fee. It isn't a chat about how much footballers are paid compared to nurses/everyone else.
Climb on your high horse if you want, but you'll just look a bit daft.

I think we already know it's a twisted society we live in with regard to weekly wages. As long as we don't assume people's worth is reflected by the amount of money they earn.

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
We must have got past the point of arguing wages are ridiculus? We have been saying it for 25 years.
It is probably the market rate for a natural goalscorer and they will have to beat off competition to sign him. Just like we would have to pay players more wages than any other club that wants them.

Why should Bournemouth's millionaire owner pay nurses £115k p/w?

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
Are those average salaries based on the 25 man PL squad or the total of all players?
The likes of Manure and Chelsea have upwards of 80 players on the books.

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
Those figures were provided by GSSS (Global Sports Salaries Survey).
They are at best suspect and highly misleading when trying to establish the respective total Wage bill at each of the clubs.
For example we now know that Bournemouth's Wage bill for last season was £60m compared to our £27m (before bonuses).

Don't be too surprised some on here think signing someone who will be 38 by the end of his contract is exactly the same as paying for someone far younger with a sell on value.
Negredo was a bargain this season at 100k a week plus a signing on fee in some eyes. Ignoring relegation, the money has been done and nothing to show for it and you still need to spend to sign a goalscorer is exactly the same as us signing Gray for a fee.
Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
Why has the football world got this notion about young players getting better and worth more. Bournemouth will know exactly what their getting with Defoe. Some people would be happy spending that money on a 17 year old with the footballing ability of goldfish. By getting back in the England squad even at his age, it's saying he his probably better than the younger players available for the likes of us and B'mouth.

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
As long as the owner doesn't pop off, they don't get relegated and Defoe doesn't get injured early on it should be fine. I really hope we don't adopt that model though. This has got Blackburn or Bolton written all over it.

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
It's stupid money for someone of his age, that will probably only be a bit part player as well.
There's no way you would play him ahead of Josh King or maybe even Afobe.
A good player to come on and nick a chance, but you don't pay that kind of money for that kind of player.

Re: Bournemouth/Defoe
People need to read and understand aggi's post #10.
Bournemouth are no longer reliant on their billionaire owner ploughing vast amounts into the club. Income from the PL/TV deal is now sufficient to allow the club to break even whilst paying a limited number of players high wages.
It's not the Burnley way but is still the chosen method of most clubs in a their bid to ensure PL membership.
