Club crest. Why did we revert back?
Apologies if this has been covered. Was it our first PL strip that was the driver for this, the anniversary kit? Did we just continue after that? Was there any supporter consultation? Thanks.

anniversary kit coincided with being in the PL so it was part of our 'brand'.Bop wrote:Apologies if this has been covered. Was it our first PL strip that was the driver for this, the anniversary kit? Did we just continue after that? Was there any supporter consultation? Thanks.

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
The 80s/90s crest was terrible, thinking back. A bumbling mess.
The reversion to our historical crest was a masterstroke. It's such a cleaner design, much more marketable, and now with the global exposure afforded by the PL, a strong branding.
Unfortunately many fans brought up on the poor football of the 80s and 90s think that the crest from that time was the right and proper crest. It's got no historical significance, and is below even the 70s variations on 'BFC' in terms of design.

I remember the upset people who've got the other one as a tattoo.

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
We wore the old county borough coat of arms on the shirts in 2009/10 then created a new club badge in same style for the next season.
Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
I did hear a tale that we couldn't copyright the previous one so part of the reason for changing it was to replace with one that could be copyrighted. No idea if that's true though.
Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
The other crest was actually created around about 1974 but wasn't used on the home shirt until the 79/80 season(it'd appeared on the programme before then and on the yellow away strips since 1976). I actually don't mind that crest, although I prefer the current one. We'd actually only worn the badge the current one is based on for 8 or 9 seasons in the sixties, so it had no great tradition with the club. And we didn't actually start wearing it on our shirts until 60/61 so the fact it appeared on the kit celebrating the 50th anniversary of us winning the championship in 59/60 wasn't entirely correct, although it had appeared on the programme since the early 50s.

First kit I remember just had the letters BFC in script. At least that was on the tracksuit, was it on the shirt as well?

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
I've got mine on my Endsleigh shirt that I wore to Wembley- if I miss the crest I just get it out and think of all the heartache, missed chances and wondering if we were ever going to compete with the big boys again....
If anything the return to the successful crest is because it is a scientifically proven lucky charm.

Don't care when we reverted back,
I always disliked both of these.
and I know this has been discussed before but is it the latin motto at the bottom of the club badge or is it Burnley Football Club?

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
If I remember correctly the 1974 crest was a design that won a competition for a new crest for the shirts via the Burnley Express and the club in around 1974.
I distinctly remember my school taking part and I believe most of the schools in Burnley also took part. It was annoying when a professional designer won if my memory is correct???. Ruining the hopes of all the kids that took part....

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
The Latin Pretiumque Et Causa Laboris was on the bottom of the old County Borough of Burnley Coat of Arms which became redundant in 1974 with the changes to local government which saw Burnley lose its county borough status.iluva64 wrote:and I know this has been discussed before but is it the latin motto at the bottom of the club badge or is it Burnley Football Club?
The similar badge with Burnley Football Club on the bottom has been the Burnley FC club badge since the 2010/11 season.

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
The badge used for the 09/10 season had "Pretiumque et Causa Laboris" which translates as "The prize and the cause of our Labours" (not is the cause as many say) but was changed after that one season to "Burnley Football Club"iluva64 wrote:Don't care when we reverted back,

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
It surely must be a lucky charm so the question should be why did we change from the Crest we had in the glory days of the 60's to the busy crest we had in the seventies? I've got a whiskey glass with the 70's, 80's and 90's Crest and also one with our current crest on.Ightenclaret wrote:I've got mine on my Endsleigh shirt that I wore to Wembley- if I miss the crest I just get it out and think of all the heartache, missed chances and wondering if we were ever going to compete with the big boys again....

I like both and still fond of the old 70's crest more because it reminds me of my youth rather than the terrible football!

Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
Probably comes down to which badge was in use when you first started watching the Clarets. For me, the 70s badge is the "correct" one even though I know it isn't
Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
I had a tattoo of Jon Snow done on my chest, the week after, the nights watch killed him so I got it removed, when he came back from the dead I was happy but sad all at the same time.
Re: Club crest. Why did we revert back?
I know a guy who was a big Doctor Who fan when it started in the early sixties and had a huge tattoo of the Doctor on his back. Over 50 years later he's still a big fan and his back is a right mess!Diesel wrote:I had a tattoo of Jon Snow done on my chest, the week after, the nights watch killed him so I got it removed, when he came back from the dead I was happy but sad all at the same time.

Spent a few of hundred quid on a flag which had the Latin motto on the banner and the buggers changed it after one season so I threw it in the bin.
