Gray to Newcastle
Another story out about Andre.
With him entering his final year of his contract we aren't really in a string position. I can see Benitez / Newcastle offering less than ten million for him.

He's done a fine effective job for us but I think we can live with his departure for anything above what we paid.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
Not worth selling for £10m, even if he walks for nowt next June.
Re: Gray to Newcastle
I'd let Gray go for the right money, but it would have to be closer to 15 million for me to consider it reasonable. Championship top goalscorers go for 10 million, and he's shown he's above that standard. Wether he goes on to be a decent premier league player is something I'm not sure about, but given the way his career has developed we'd have to demand more than 10 surely.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
If they do we don't take it. I don't buy into this we need to get shut argument. A contract is a contract. He's here for another year unless the money's right. If he plays one game and scores one goal next season it could be the goal that makes the difference. A lot can happen in a season. If it costs us a few million at contracts end that is how it goes. Players not money is what Burnley need.... and I never thought I'd be saying that.
Re: Gray to Newcastle
Would have to be a silly figure.
If not keep, ideally for seasons to come, if not, sell in January.

Its Newcastle, they'll over pay.
Re: Gray to Newcastle
Still think we should keep him. He's a young man and will have learnt a lot this season. He just needs better quality of delivery and the flood gates will open (imo). Unless its an offer we cant refuse then we must keep him.

needs to stay of social media and did the celeb girlfriend affect him?
Keep him and get his head in gear.
Finally, give him some decent service.

Hope he stays...I can visualise him doing well in those black n white stripes though.
Re: Gray to Newcastle
For the sake of 10 million we'd be better off keeping him and letting him go for nothing if he won't sign a new deal. Not sure I have much faith in Dyche replacing him properly either after his previous efforts at signing strikers.

So he wants out too? Sounds like a very happy dressing room with all the players behind the manager.ClaretTony wrote:Hardly uses social media, and I'm aware of his head not being in gear.
Re: Gray to Newcastle
Where does all this if he gets the service he'll score loads come from, if any striker gets chances on a plate they'll score goals.
Facts are he's missed some easy chances in the last few home games when he's had the service.
He's not irreplaceable.

More likely a season in the PL and they think they can do much better paywise.KRBFC wrote:So he wants out too? Sounds like a very happy dressing room with all the players behind the manager.
Re: Gray to Newcastle
Ten million isn't enough.
As for the happy dressing room, there's a difference between players not being happy and players 'potentially' looking for a bigger pay day than we can offer.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
Read somewhere that West Ham are willing to pay 12m but only
in installments and add-ons whereas Newcastle are happy to pay 12m up front.
What ever and whoever 12m sounds pretty good to me even with only a year to go on his contract.
Think we should play hardball and say 15m minimum.
Hopefully we can persuade him to stay unless he really wants to go.
We'll never match what Newcastle are willing to pay in wages
which is probably twice what we are willing to.
The bad news is I can't think of anyone to replace him and certainly
not for less than 15m.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
Ten million? Scott Hogan and Jonathan Kodjia went for £15 million and they didn't score anywhere near as many as Gray nor did they have any Premier League experience. £20 million at the absolute minimum.

I'll be surprised if Gray's still a Claret come August, but if he moves anywhere i feel it will be either Midlands or London.

No point in selling for £10 million. He can't be replaced for that. Never mind being Champ top scorer strikers that can score in the Prem are worth their weight in gold.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
I'd like him to stay, but if the offer is upwards of £17m, I think it will be - and should be - looked at.
Improved this season. Less goals, yes. but all round there has been improvement, which means he is responding to our coaching methods. Now we need to strengthen in order to get the best out of him if he ends up staying.
Would have to be a big offer for me. £12m not enough, that'd be classed by me as a loss. To replace him would cost upward of £20m, unless we went for a relatively unproven striker.
Good that our players are being targeted tho, shows we are getting summat right.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
I think he wants the ball to his feet to run onto possibly he might get that elsewhere. However I think we will play it around more next season. This one was all about survival.
If I'm honest I don't think he had ever really loved being at Burnley and at times his body language has shown it.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
We shouldn't sell for less than it would cost to replace him.
If there was a replacement for the same price or less Newcastle would buy them instead.
Even If Gray did want to run his contract down and leave on a free he'd need another reasonable season (see Ings; 11 goals 4 assists) to attract the interest of a decent team so he once again he helps us on our way to another £100m.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
Surprised there's so many eager to see the back of Gray. Strange as we'd then need to sign two forwards (a viable upgrade on Barnes is a must) in addition to two centre halves and that's before we start addressing some of the other deficiencies in anticipation of a season that I think will be tougher than the one just gone.
I'd also add that our record of signing strikers, post October 2012, is decidedly poor.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
I think there's another way of looking at it.
We probably can't afford to sign a striker for £25 million, but if we were to be able to get in excess of £12 million for Gray, then it would only cost another 12 million or so for that striker who is a step up.
Personally I'd prefer to go down that route rather than spend say £8 million on back-up for the strikers we currently have.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
That relies of there being a 25m striker out there who is considerably better than Gray, who's club is willing to sell, who's wages we can afford and who want's to come to Burnely over any other team who may also be interested.nil_desperandum wrote:I think there's another way of looking at it.

A lot of ifs and buts.
Benteke cost Palace 27m, 32m after add ons, reported on £120k per week and got 15 goals this season. That's the sort of money we'd be looking at for a proven 15 goal a season striker.
Otherwise we stick with what we have or go in for a cheaper sub 10 goal striker or high championship scorer and hope they come good for us.
Edit: Third option, Find another Llorente who fits our framework and will bag us 15 goals for £5m. Done by using our extensive and famous European scouting network

Oh, I don't disagree with that. It's just that I hear a lot of talk that we need a striker who's a big step up on what we currently have. As you say this would mean spending upwards of £25 million. I can't see that happening if we offer Gray an improved deal.CombatClaret wrote:That relies of there being a 25m striker out there who is considerably better than Gray, who's club is willing to sell, who's wages we can afford and who want's to come to Burnely over any other team who may also be interested.

I'm not necessarily advocating we go down this route, but was just flagging it up as a possible scenario if Gray wants to go and we get a suitable offer.

Re: Gray to Newcastle
Andre Gray has pace, which, for all our other Striker's attributes, they lack..
He offers something different, and pace is the one thing that even the best organised defences fear...
We need to keep him, or replace with someone with similar qualities..

Re: Gray to Newcastle
We shouldn't even entertain offers below £20 million. Young, English, has pace to burn, has improved season on season and just scored nine Premier league goals in his debut season including a hat trick.
People are seriously suggesting we sell him for Ross McCormack money?

I dont think he's a premier league player. Sort of good in the championship but can't cut it above. Like Jordan Rhodes, bamforth and loads of others.
He looked shite against us in the 0-0 away at palace 2 years ago. I was disappointed they took him off.
