O/T Artificial Grass
No, not that kind - the stuff you put down when your lawn's shot at...
A while ago, a poster asked about the merits or otherwise of artificial grass.
I've just put some down, about 4 metres by 2 and a half and it looks and feels amazing.
The pics aren't brilliant (one home town railway totem, Nelson, for us Lankies, and the other, where the missus hails from for our less fortunate Yorkie brethren ) because of the bright sun but there's no clue, seriously, that the stuff isn't real.
I got it from Grass Direct and the type is Cape Verde. It's superb.

It was me who asked for people's experience of the stuff. Looks good in your pictures.
Did you have a lawn previously in the same space?
What work was required / preparation?

Re: O/T Artificial Grass
Yup, there was a knackered, moss-ridden lawn there.
That had to be ripped up and then the area levelled with sharp sand with a new frame put round because it had been a raised lawn.
Membrane on top, new lawn rolled out, left a few days to settle and then a few nails to tack it down although I'm not going to bother with that because it's not going to get much wear and tear like, for example, kids playing on it.
During the next dry spell, I'm supposed to brush in a little kiln-dried sand to spruce it up a little - all the instructions/tips are on the website, you really can't go wrong.

The blackbirds are out in force now but when I was working on the new lawn a couple of weeks ago, there were robins looking for food for their youngsters everywhere - I nearly fed one by hand but it was just a little bit shy.tim_noone wrote:Very nice....the blackbirds will be a little confused if they try digging for worms though!
Very amusing to see them land on the new lawn and wonder what the hell was going on.....there were still plenty of grubs and suchlike in the borders so they did OK.

I've got a pair of Robin's that have made their home in my garden, great to see.
The Bluetit on my shed roof two days ago had me well excited though. A beautiful coloured bird.

Re: O/T Artificial Grass
Evensteadiereddie, your garden looks great and sheltered. Early April I replaced my front garden, which I bought it via Tim at Pendle Village Carpets, following the previous plastic grass post.
When you mentioned you weren't going to nail it down, remember if you're grass is exposed to any strong winds it's likely to move. In my case the grass would probably get blown onto the garden 5 doors away, or someone could roll it up and steal it.
If you're not nailing it in different places, then put 2" screws every 4' through the grass into the frame, which will stop any movement and theft.

Think your confusing the early old light green Astros of the 70's.kritichris wrote:Looks great but when you play footie on it does the ball bounce higher?
The new 3G ones are far far better and in my experience on having played on them for 3/4 years now are better then grass.
I'm talking about 5-side in sports centres and not residential gardens but in the gardens ones that i've seen the surface is similar to 3G but not as good.
One big difference with the new residential and commercial grasses is that the news one's have a "pile" which as stated above does need that brushing maintenance as suggested.

Re: O/T Artificial Grass
I replaced my front lawn last year and love it, sweep it once a month to get rid of any leaves etc and always against the pile so it maintains that just cut look.
Grand Kids can run on it in the rain and snow with no effect to us as we peer through the window at there glowing red faces ahhh peace.
