Divorce advice.

Post by Sidney1st » Fri Jun 09, 2017 2:26 pm

I'm finally getting round to getting divorced and wondered if anyone had done it without using solicitors or a website.

It seems easy enough from what I've read, just pop along to my local court and fill out some paperwork?

Anyone else done it without help from elsewhere?

Got divorced a few years ago. We did it ourselves.
Courts extremely helpful, when certain parts needed
changing. We googled most of it. Much better than paying someone to do it, or that's what we found.

Try not to get solicitors involved sid.

They like to stir it up. The more it's stirred the more fractious it gets. The more fractious it gets they more money they make. I have a 12 grand solicitors Bill to prove it.

Going to a solicitor re a divorce, and not expecting a big Bill at the end . Is like going to a used car lot and not expecting the sales man to try and flog you a car!

No cash or assets to hide, I've made sure of that by having nothing anyone can take from me whilst clearing debts from the marriage.
Even my car is going into my current spouses name now the finance is paid off.

Turns out I haven't spoken to her in 2 yrs when I checked, and we've separated 7 yrs now.

I did it myself with a few complications involved which meant a bit more running about. If it's amicable between you both be very straight forward can't remember the cost think it was in the region of £200 that's from five years ago

surely depends on the circumstances...if its a relatively amicable split and you trust her not to play silly beggars then keep the blood suckers out of it....we got a 60 grand solicitors bill when buying our mill....avoid like the plague if you can....if it does go the solicitor route then make sure she knows she will be paying half.....good luck sydney.

Agree on keeping solicitors out of it if you can. Me and the thankfully now ex had been separated for years. No money or anything else to dispute. Her solicitor was trying to egg her on for all sorts of stuff. To be fair, she told him to get stuffed!

The best divorce advice I can offer is that of a preventative measure. Dont get married in the first place...

just wish I knew that before I bloody did it...! (the first time...)

Helped a family member out with a divorce a few years ago. Easy if on grounds of separation and uncontested.

I found a website (can't remember name but google 'divorce online' or similar. They do the paperwork and send it to you for signing. Stress free. Cost about 1k.

Did it myself and it cost about £300 tops, just downloaded everything and stuck to the timescales which I remember were important. Straightforward. Good luck.

Sid - do either of you have a pension ?

As if one of you does (or you both have but one is worth a lot more than the other) then one of you could be entitled to some of the other persons pension.

It's called a sharing order and one will get a pension credit and the other a pension debit - it can be very significant in divorce settlements.
