Re: George Boyd
We will, but as I said a few weeks ago, he's become the football equivalent of playing a specialist batsman at number 7 in cricket. Its a sensible damage limitation ploy for a weak team, but if you want to progress you have to get to a point when you can do without. In reality, whilst he has been a real asset in games against the top 5-6 when we've been on the back foot, in many games home and away against teams we need to meet on more equal terms, his lack of quality and tendency to give up possession cheaply was an Achilles heel.
So - it isn't a disaster and we can and should take the chance to upgrade.

Been a good signing for us and I for one will miss him.
We need to get another winger in for sure, for me we did even if he was staying. Finding a wide player with his energy and defensive attributes might be a tough task.

Re: George Boyd
We signed a winger in January who has played left back, so I'd like to think he can replicate many of those attributes. JBG showed plenty of defensive toughness when he played (as he did for Iceland in the Euros). We still have, and should keep, Scott Arfield.jedi_master wrote:Been a good signing for us and I for one will miss him.

We've got plenty of work ethic in those departments - I'd expect us to add more this summer, but lets remember what options we still have.

He has done exceedingly well for us and as mentioned we will miss his energy. Good luck to him.

He's done a decent job for us but I think the club were spot on offering just one more year. Time to move on and sign a better replacement.

Re: George Boyd
If Defour does stay I hope he is staying for the right reasons because he will be an asset if he is given game time and of course gets his fitness levels up.
Re: George Boyd
If we get the same level of value and work rate from our new signings, I'll be very pleased.
Probably not as effective as id have liked with the ball but he's been good for us.

We definitely need to keep Arfield with Boyd going. I'd be really surprised (and happy) if Defour stays.
Always liked Boyd, scored some important goals and never let us down in the big games. He's been a great signing.

Scored a few memorable goals (thinking Man City and Bournemouth), ran a lot, had some good games and some bad. All in all he's been a bargain for £3 million. He's played his part in winning the Championship and ensuring PL safety. Good luck Georgie lad, hope you find the right club!!

Been very good for us, an integral part of the success. It doesn't make much sense to let him go, keeping him would have gave us the option of ''reverting to type'' if things don't work out so well throughout next season.

Work rate is the minimum requirement in a Dyche team, at this stage we need much much more. Boyd has been great for us he really has, but he's not got the talent to take us much further forward unfortunately

Re: George Boyd
I'm thankful to claretspice, I never realised George Boyd was up to batting at number seven.
He's done well for us, better than some might think, although I remain mystified as to how he won the player of the year awards in 2014/15 season. We did offer him a new deal so that suggests we weren't over eager to push him through the door, but maybe it is the right time for him to leave.
In terms of numbers, Boyd was replaced in January with the signing of Boyd. Time for JBG to step up I think.

Re: George Boyd
I will miss him greatly. he and Scott Arfield epitomise the Sean Dyche give everything and some, attitude and this has definitely inspired the rest of the squad to keep going, when it would be easy to slacken off. Away from home, their energy has been crucial. Boyd is one of the top tackling midfielders, winning the ball back with his long legs and breaking up moves - and that is in the prem.
Given his current energy, 2 years seems trivial. Must have been a change of plan in Mr Dyche's head at the time. Hope he gets the signings to make it happen.
My huge thanks and applause to George Boyd. May you prosper at your new club and be applauded off the field on every occasion. we could not have done it without you.
(My lady friend Gillian's favourite player. When she forgot her glasses, he was the one she could always pick out!)

Can only echo the comments on here. Both Boyd and Arfield have been excellent acquisitions, making the most of their talent and great credit must go to Dyche for facilitating this. There's no sentiment in football though and we now need to upgrade on both of them.

Re: George Boyd
I wish all our signings proved to be as "good value" as George has. Just lacked that bit of pace and drive forward. He always played with a smile on his face and had a great football brain. In essence the ultimate team player
However we cannot move forward on sentiment alone. Sadly time to move on for him. I think if he stayed he would be depriving someone their place as SD definitely likes him. Brady and JBG need more game time. I think Scotty has one more season-the ultimate utility player
Good luck George-trust you find a club that will allow you to demonstrate your skills

Re: George Boyd
Thanks George.
Still find it surprising we didn't stretch to 2 years, he has probably been one of the first names on the team sheet for a couple of seasons.
I remember the day he signed in disbelief that we had spent £3m, and for the record I don't ever remember him needing to get Dyche fit!
Regardless he has always done what the manager has asked, perhaps not what the fans wanted to see but followed his instructions.
All the best George!

My ideal midfield would be:
Brady........Hendrick........Defour..........JBG.
I would have liked to have seen Boyd as a number 10 in a Burnley shirt, particularly when we were in the Championship, didn't do any harm not playing him there though did It?
Anyway great servant and probably a great lad as well.

Re: George Boyd
Can't see Dyche playing a midfield that open, especially in the Prem, we would be over run. Boyd has scored vital goals, even this season, Stoke at home springs to mind, gave us some much needed breathing space for the run-in. All the best George thanks for the memories .Diesel wrote:My ideal midfield would be:

Re: George Boyd
Will be sad to see him go, whilst recognising that the time has possibly come. Could always be relied upon when it really mattered and his truly immense effort at Deepdale at the end of last season is one that stands out for me. Top man George .....if he is off then I really wish him all the very best.
Re: George Boyd
It's probably right that he moves on at this point, and it'll be interesting to see how Dyche goes about replacing a player who had in effect become his 'comfort blanket' when being defensively solid was vital, or when the opposition had a particularly threatening fullback who needed neutralising. To progress though, we have to find a way to be less reliant on work rate and allow quality to dictate the outcome of games for us.
In the end George Boyd will remembered as a player who epitomised the golden era under Dyche. Somebody who gave absolutely everything for the cause, and put the good of the team well above his own ego. Someone who could compensate for the differences in quality with his huge worth ethic and desire. Best of luck to him.

It will be a sad day if as expected GB leaves. Nobody knows the ins and outs of the new contract offered but obviously not to what Boyd is looking for. I might raise a few eyebrows with this comment but IMO he has been our most important outfield player over the last few years and given the system we play I think he will be hard to replace.

I don't think we ever really saw the best of Boyd, mainly because of the job he was asked to do for the team. His excellent form during in the closing stages of the 15/16 season showed what he's capable of in the right circumstances.
That said, he always did his job well and made a good contribution in his time here. All the best for the future, George.

Re: George Boyd
Tragic mistake not to offer him a two year contact. Yes he didn't score that often and yes he could have attacked more but he did fit our framework. Sean Dyche clearly rated him and he did a brilliant job for us in the time he was at the Turf for which we should be grateful. I shall miss him and wish him all the best for the future. It would be a joke if Walters signs and is offered a two year contract. Thanks for everything George.
