That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
Ten games played in the First Division with 66 goals scored. I doubt that record will ever be beaten.

God I remember that boxing day match my dad and uncle took me and the queue to get in was horrendous, Burnley were 2-0 up before we got in, I will never forget the atmosphere great day

We went 1-0 up but United pulled it back to 1-1 and we didn't go back in front until just before half time.Crewe claret wrote:God I remember that boxing day match my dad and uncle took me and the queue to get in was horrendous, Burnley were 2-0 up before we got in, I will never forget the atmosphere great day
Attendance was over 37,500.

Then we managed to lose the return game 1-5 with George Best scoring his first United goal I think. West Ham won the return 3-1 at Deadwood if memory serves.

Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
My first season ticket year. Great times playing for Rosehill Junior School Saturday mornings, followed by 't Turf in the afternoon, home for tea then nipping out to Peacock's shop for 't Pink and a quarter of wine gums about 6 o'clock.
Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
Was at both the home and away games. Remember Ian Towers and Paddy Crerand knoking seven bells out of each other on the Turf. And was the away game one of George Best's early games for UTD? Or possibly his debut. At least we beat them on aggregate!

Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
Googling that season, it shows Arsenal & Sheffield Wednesday would go forward into the following season's Inter Cities Fairs Cup competition. Interesting, in that they finished 6th & 8th respectively. I realise there was, at that time, a requirement in having to be a City in order to play in the competition. ( Burnley bucked that trend in 1966/7) Given that Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham & Everton finished higher, could anyone confirm how Arsenal & Sheffield Wednesday got 'the nod'?
PS: Blackburn finished 7th & Clarets 9th.

Crerand sent off at Turf Moor, Best's second game for them(debut at home to WBA in Sep.) and he and the other winger,Willie Anderson, were exceptional that day. For the younger fans, Burnley fans, including me and my cousin were in the Stretford End terrace and seats. No trouble, just rival chanting.

think the criteria was the 'teams city' had to have held a Trade Fair at that location
Confirmation:
the competition was set up to promote international trade fairs. Friendly games were regularly held between teams from cities holding trade fairs and it was from these games that the competition evolved. The competition was initially only open to teams from cities that hosted trade fairs and where these teams finished in their national league had no relevance

Many thanks for this. However, I wonder how Arsenal were chose over both Chelsea & Tottenham?....all based in London.....claretblue wrote:'...could anyone confirm how Arsenal & Sheffield Wednesday got 'the nod...'

Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
It was all done on invitation with recommendations from the league. One thing was certain, no more than one club from any city could enter so once Arsenal were in it ruled out both Chelsea & Spurs. Man United and Everton, I'm not sure of the reasoning for those two being bypassed.claretfern wrote:Googling that season, it shows Arsenal & Sheffield Wednesday would go forward into the following season's Inter Cities Fairs Cup competition. Mostly local matches, apart from Chelsea v Blackpool and Blackburn v West Ham. Why didn't they swap opponents, then they could be home in time for tea?

The Clarets relying on their Scottish forwards that day!
Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
Not the only freak occurrence that day. West Ham and West Brom both had exactly the same attendance of 34,500, was that just a typo, though? Maybe Blackburn scoring eight goals was a typo, too. Don't believe everything you read.

Hadn't spotted that, but certainly some achievement on the same day.FCBurnley wrote:And 3 players scored 4 goals which I would guess is also a record ?

Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
In 1965-66 at the United game at Turf Moor, there was a hell of a lot of trouble. Both sets of fans were in the Cricket Field End and after Alex Elder stroked home a last minute penalty to make it 3 nil, both sets of fans invaded the pitch and fought a full-on battle.Silkyskills1 wrote:Crerand sent off at Turf Moor, Best's second game for them(debut at home to WBA in Sep.) and he and the other winger,Willie Anderson, were exceptional that day. Yes. It was -5 degrees Fahrenheit, the coldest day on record here in Southern Ontario. Isn't that the record you were referring to?

Ah the 60's the decade where you could get your head caved in for a very reasonable admission charge if you happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time... other then that a great time to be a Burnley fan I think you will agree

8 of those 10 fixtures will take place next season. 4 in the Premier League and 4 in The Championship. The games involving Blackpool and Rovers are not even close to happening again any time soon!
Re: That record breaking Boxing Day in 1963
Burnley quite clearly used to down the attendance figures for a bit off the tax. Everyone knew it. I started drinking in the Red Rock when I was 16 because it was the local policeman's pub, so you could be sure of a lock in.

I see that there were only ten fixtures and that Arsenal and Birmingham did not play that day ? Anyone know why ? I have no idea.

Don't know why they didn't play on Boxing Day but match took place on Dec 28th '63. Final score Birmingham 1-4 Arsenal.Dum Spiro Spero wrote:I see that there were only ten fixtures and that Arsenal and Birmingham did not play that day ? Anyone know why ? I have no idea.
