It's time that the civil list was reduced.Andrew wanted his idle daughters to join the gravy train but he was knocked back.
There is a charge to go in the palaces this is adequate to cover all repairs.
All grace and favour accomadation should carry a fair rent. There are too many with their lavish lifestyles being paid for by tax payers which has to stop.
Harry wants to be a real person. No problem he trained as a soldier let him re-enlist

Re: Royal Pay Rise
It's their country ultimately.
If you don't like it stage a revolt and get them deposed.
They do more good than harm though if you take the long view.
Would we be any better or worse off in a republic?
The palaces would still need maintaining like they are in other countries that killed off their royal families.

Re: Royal Pay Rise
The money allocated is a percentage of the profits of The Crown Estate. It's usually 15%
but this has been increased to 25% to cover the extraordinary cost of repairs.
The balance, 75%, goes into the public coffers.

Re: Royal Pay Rise
This isn't an anti-royal post, but that is absolutely not true. It's our country, and they "rule" by our consent. We are a "constitutional monarchy", and we could - if we wished, have a referendum to abolish the monarchy altogether.Sidney1st wrote:It's their country ultimately.
.
On balance I favour retaining the monarchy, but that's in large part because I think the current monarch has done a good job. My view on this could easily change if we had the misfortune to have a monarch who behaved differently, and was less of a statesman and ambassador for the country.

Re: Royal Pay Rise
I'm more of a Republican and have no time or connection with the Royal Family whatsoever but even I would concede that the Queen has done a decent job doing Queenie things.
It's the Prince Andrew types with his charting of a private plane or whatever at the cost of thousands and thousands of pounds to go galivanting off to play golf in Australia or wherever that really pi55 me off.
After the Queen has gone who can do the same sort of job and not exploit the massive privileges that they have?

When the Diana v Camilla row was on a few years ago I took the stance that the monarchy, as an establishment, is greater than individual members, individual kings or queens. I think it would be short sighted to get rid just because of the popularity of a single monarch at the time.

Re: Royal Pay Rise
So that's at least £1 billion to prop up an incompetent prime minister, and an 8% pay rise for the most privileged family in the world.
Meanwhile you've got people burning to death in buildings on the back of saving a few grand, and public services cut to the bare bone in the name of austerity.
This country seriously needs to recalibrate its priorities, because this is nothing short of insulting.
