Post by JamesSherbourne » Tue Jul 04, 2017 6:06 pm

Has anyone got any experience of in car mobile wifi ? Looking at buying one to hopefully keep the kids tablets online whist on journeys in the summer.Does it work ? Is it worth bothering with ?

Pretty sure it's just a 3G/4G SIM card which then allows devices to connect? Won't making your phone a hotspot have the same effect? Depends on your data plan I suppose.

Some car come with it free for a period when buying the car brand new and then its pay monthly after that.
I know Vauxhall do it, but unsure of the cost.

As mentioned above. You can usually share your 3G/4g signal over wifi by setting up a hotspot on your phone.

I have it built into my car, but i have to provide the sim card and data plan. I pay £8 a month for all you can eat data and works brilliantly. I use it mainly for the sat nav (it has auto update and google earth overlay) and the news and weather.

It works not different to tethering from your phone. if the data isn't directly effecting the car, just buy a in car charger and use your phone for a wifi hotspot.

Is it just me who thinks this is so wrong?! I don't trust my phone with WiFi so definitely would't trust my car. All too George Orwell for me.
